Oyster Restoration Project

Phase One ...

Wednesday, June 23, 2004, close to 2 dozen Kiawah volunteers helped the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SC DNR), prepare bags of oyster shells.  For what?  The building of an oyster reef at Bass Creek! This was Phase 1 of a 2-phase project.  This interesting and ecologically important work will help to keep the Kiawah waters clean and stable.  A good supply of the filter-feeding oyster reefs are keystones for a healthy estuary.

The SC DNR has a well-organized procedure so the work goes smoothly and quickly even on a hot day.  Afterwards the folks enjoyed a watermelon break as well-earned reward!
