KIAWAH ISLAND — An unlucky scallop boat stayed aground Saturday as winds and waves kept U.S. Coast Guard and its owners from towing it free.
They'll try again today, said Sean Shrum, a civilian search-and-rescue controller with the Coast Guard. A 77-foot boat, the Nanami broke free of its anchor chain Thursday evening and ran aground Friday.
The two person crew, on their way to Cherry Point, remained aboard through a stormy Friday night.
It's the second time the Coast Guard has gone to the aid of the Nanami on this trip. The boat became disabled off Cape Hatteras on its way south from New Jersey and was towed to Southport, N.C., by two Coast Guard cutters. Please click on a thumbnail to view a larger version of the photo below.
