Nesting patrol was eventful the morning of May 11, 2010, but not because a nest was located. Instead, there was a leatherback sea turtle that had washed ashore. It was so sad to see this once magnificent animal dead on the beach. The more gruesome photos have NOT been posted. DNR showed up to perform a necropsy to determine why/how it died. DuBose Griffin from DNR showed us the right front flipper where it was obvious that a rope or net had been wrapped around it so tightly that it abraded the skin. The abrasion was at least 6" wide too. Poor turtle probably drowned from not being able to surface for air. So sad...
