TEGA CAY--Planning commissioners are forming a committee to explore creating an architectural review board.
An architectural review board would enable city officials to have more control over the outward appearance of a building--something it currently lacks, planning commissioners said. They discussed the idea at their meeting last week.
Currently, city officials can only intervene if they feel there's a safety hazard with the outward appearance of a building.
"I think it's a worthy effort to start to do that, especially with an eye towards future development," said Planning Commission Chairman Peter Bogert. "I think they need as much control over what happens to it as possible."
An architectural review board, if approved by the Tega Cay City Council, could be modeled after Kiawah Island's Architectural Review Board, planning commission members said.
"They're (Kiawah Island) very similar in geographic layout to the way we are," Doug Burns said. "It's all handled and controlled. They have graphics controls, material controls. Even the color of the buildings is controlled."
Planning commission members don't yet know when they will take their proposal before the city council for its approval.
Planning commission members also made a similar motion requesting that the city council put together a beautification committee.
That request is expected to be heard at this month's city council meeting, Feb. 17 starting at 7:30 p.m.
