Local mayors converged on the visitors center in downtown Charleston Friday afternoon to thank sightseers for their discretionary dollars and to remind constituents that those out-of-town license plates on their streets and the confused people on their sidewalks are the lifeblood of the local economy.
Charleston's Joe Riley, Mount Pleasant's Harry Hallman, Kiawah's Bill Wert and Seabrook Island's John DuBois all turned up to shake hands, pass out sweet tea and smile for the cameras.
The Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau signed the civic leaders on as part of its "Tourism Appreciation Month" initiative. The local CVB also rigged up the banner across King Street that reads "Thanks for Supporting the Lowcountry's #1 Industry: Tourism."
The Holy City and its neighboring towns attracted 4.3 million people in 2002, visitors that had a $4.7 billion impact on the area economy
