Stanley Morganstein received 10 percent of the votes. Newcomer Harry McHugh received 24 percent of the votes and will fill the seat of former Town Councilman Donald McIverk, who resigned in June when he moved off the island.

The figures released Tuesday night were preliminary, and official results will be certified today. About 30 percent of registered voters turned out for the election.

Wert said the council hopes to reach out to surrounding communities, such as Seabrook and Johns islands, and include them in its plans.

"We also want to continue our support of needy charities and the arts in the area," he said.

He said the town hopes in the spring to begin work on a road project at the entrance to Kiawah Island.

Kiawah Island Parkway will be resurfaced and leveled off on the roughly three-mile stretch from the main gate to the roundabout, Wert said.
