Kiawah Island voters overwhelmingly decided Tuesday to pursue the possibility of their town taking over the island's water and sewer utility.

The vote was 387 for and 19 against, said Town Councilman Charles Lipuma, chair of the town's utility task force. Turnout was about 28 percent.

The resort island's utility has been run by a private company, Kiawah Development Partners, but it recently told the town that it's willing to sell. Lipuma said Tuesday's vote is just the start.

"Now we have to decide what we think the utility is worth," he said. "But this is a good start."
