No challengers have filed yet for mayor, council

The Kiawah Island mayor's office and all four Town Council seats will be up for grabs in the Dec. 5 election.  The filing period for candidates opened Sept. 6 and closes at noon Sept. 29.  Mayor William G. Wert and the four incumbent council members have filed notices that they are seeking re-election, said Kiawah Town Administrator Tumiko Rucker. Rucker said no challengers had filed by early this week, but it's still possible some or all current officeholders will be challenged.  "It's been very quiet so far, but it's still early in the filing period," she said.

The mayor and council members serve two-year terms. In 2004, voters re-elected Wert and Councilmen G. Steven Orban and Donald McIver.  Charles Lipuma and Alan L. Burnaford joined council that year as newcomers.

About half of the island town's 1,300 voters turned out for the election, which included a nonbinding referendum question asking if the council and mayor's terms should be extended to four years.  Voters expressed a desire to keep the terms the same.  There are no referendums expected this year, Rucker said.

Candidate applications and disclosure forms are available at Town Hall and on the town's Web site at www.kiawahisland.org.  For more information, go to Town Hall or call 768-9166.
