The town of Kiawah has recently erected "No Biking" signs around the island's main thoroughfare in hopes of preventing automobile-bicycle accidents.

The move comes after cars apparently knocked down bikers on at least two occasions, Kiawah Mayor Bill Wert said.

The new Freshfields Village shopping center near the island's entrance might have fueled bicycle traffic along the Kiawah Island Parkway, the main route into the island.

Wert said plans are under way to upgrade the parkway and the project involves new bike lanes. The town already has spoken with designers and contractors. The town hopes to get the necessary permits within two to five months, as soon as the town resolves how to mitigate wetlands affected by the widening. After that, work can start.

The town hopes the new bike lanes will be in place by May 2007, when the island hosts the Senior PGA tournament.
