Recommendation now goes to council
KIAWAH ISLAND--Redevelopment near the Ocean Course golf course should consist of fewer lodging units, no cottages and removal of the existing clubhouse once a new one is built, town planning commissioners decided Tuesday. The original proposal, submitted in December by Kiawah Island Golf Resort, requested a new clubhouse with 20 guestrooms and the construction of 20 four-bedroom cottages for out-of-town golfers for a total of 100 new rooms.
The new clubhouse, some 40,000 square feet, would be the island's largest and include a golf pro shop, locker rooms, dining facilities, an exercise room and meeting rooms.
Commissioners favored 10 single-family dwelling units instead of cottages that could be rented by the room. The new plan gives the development 40 rooms, plus 20 rooms inside the clubhouse.
"We felt that 60 was an adequate number," Chairman Alan Burnaford said, especially since The Sanctuary, a new hotel, is being built nearby.
The new development will also offer convention space, so there's no need to keep the existing clubhouse for a convention/hospitality center, commissioners said.
The clubhouse site would be replaced with vegetation, Burnaford added.
The commission's recommendation goes to Town Council. Council will hold its public hearing on Feb. 13, and will cast the first of two votes afterward.
