The Gibbes Museum of Art is not only a beautiful building where visitors may
view glorious artwork of myriad genres, but it also is an institution that
reaches far beyond its walls.
One example of the latter aspect occurred last week, when the Kiawah Island
organization Gibbes, etc. presented the museum with a $175,000 check.
The gift not only will support the century-old museum's stationary
exhibitions but also will underwrite several upcoming traveling exhibitions
along with Art to Go, a program that takes art into public schools.
"We're grateful for the ongoing support of Gibbes, etc. as this generous
donation will allow us to create a community art education program on Johns
Island and also will ensure that we can continue to bring exceptional
traveling exhibitions to the museum," says Todd Smith, executive director of
the Gibbes.
Gibbes, etc. is made up of a group of Kiawah Island women dedicated to
making certain the Gibbes Museum thrives. Gibbes, etc. was founded in 2001
by Ellen Walkley, Ruth Baker, Ann Trees and Cathy Marino.
Today, members of Gibbes, etc. gather each month to enjoy a variety of
programs and speakers that range from artists to medical researchers.
The organization also hosts the Kiawah Island Art and House Tour each spring
with proceeds benefiting the museum.
Throughout the seven years of the house tours, Gibbes, etc. has raised more
than $450,000 to fund traveling exhibitions. This year's gift of $175,000
also will support exhibitions such as the current "Rodin: In His Own Words"
and 2008's "Landscape of Slavery: The Plantation in American Art."
