Anyone wanting to participate in the 27th annual Kiawah Marathon or Half Marathon better register today to ensure a spot on the starting line on Dec. 11.

Registration opened for the event on Monday. As of 3:45 p.m., a total of 2,400 had registered (1,600 for the half and 800 for the marathon) and the rate of registrations had "slowed" to about 100 an hour, according to Kiawah's Race Director Dylan Jones.

"There's a chance we'll be full by the end of (today)," said Dylan Jones of reaching the event's 3,000 registration cap. "I suspect we'll be full by sometime Wednesday."

Jones said those numbers include nearly 700 people who took advantage of an accommodations package deal and the subsequent ability to sign up before Monday's start of registration. He added he was surprised that more people didn't go with the "no worry, no hassle" deal for the two-night package for Dec. 10-11. One offer includes a stay at the ultra luxurious hotel, The Sanctuary, for $185 per person per night based on double occupancy, with both runners entered in the marathon.

He added he will keep about 30 marathon-only registrations available for the hotel package offer.

Meanwhile, some registering Monday morning experienced problems with the online event registration, which had to shut down for 30 minutes in the morning to correct a snag partly because of the number of people signing up. "Online registration opened at 9 a.m. and people were getting on it immediately," Jones said.

To register or to confirm registration, see kiawahresort.com/marathon. Entry fees are $60 for the marathon and $50 for the half. There will be no 5K this year, in part to add more space for the marathon and the half.
