Dear Member:
Intense discussion by the S.C. Office of Coastal Resource Management (OCRM) following Kiawah's challenge to the initial setback line plans resulted in a revised decision announced by the government office on Oct. 9.
OCRM concluded that the 1854 shoreline data, which was originally used to calculate the revised erosion rates for Kiawah Island, is not scientifically valid and should not be included in the analysis of the setback lines. The long-term erosion rates and 40-year setback line position have been re-calculated excluding this 1854 shoreline data, resulting in lower erosion rates and a more seaward 40-year setback line position along Eugenia Ave. As a result, no existing structures will be affected by the new 40-year setback line in this area.
More detailed information on this decision will be reported in the upcoming November Digest newsletter, scheduled to be mailed to members next week.
