Johns Island's only Piggly Wiggly supermarket is poised for an expansion and renovation that will give it a "refreshed" look and wider selection, Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. said last week.

The store is in the Johns Island Shopping Center at the intersection of Maybank Highway and Bohicket Road. Work is expected to start this week and wrap up in February, said company spokeswoman Rita Postell.

Piggly Wiggly is expanding the supermarket into adjacent space that formerly housed a Kerr Drug, which relocated to a free-standing building nearby. That will give the Pig an additional 9,600 square feet, for a total of 42,000 square feet.

The extra room will allow the business to broaden its selection in areas such as produce and specialty foods, Postell said. Other planned improvements include an "upscale" deli department offering prepared meals, fresh-baked goods and a salad bar, as well as full-service meat and seafood departments, she said.

Last year, the Charleston-based supermarket chain shuttered a Johns Island location near Kiawah Island - know to locals as the "little Pig" - to avoid competition with a new sister store nearby. The store in the Island Center shopping plaza closed just before the opening of Newton Farms, a gourmet grocer in the Freshfields Village complex at the end of Betsy Kerrison Parkway.
