Many people may have to choose month to month whether to spend limited funds
on food or medicine but now Hester Allison says a new clinic could change
all that. Its the Barrier Island free medical clinic and it's free for
certain people.
"It's for those who live or work on Johns Island, or Wadmalaw, with no
medical insurance and make 200 percent of the federal poverty level",
Allison said.
That means one person in the family can make up to $26,000 dollars a year.
then for each additional family member you can add $6,000 dollars more and
still qualify.
Most of these patients only see a doctor through a visit to the ER and they
wait for that visit so long that whatever condition they have is
chronic...like Diabetes.
The clinic is paid for by grants and financial donations...and everyone from
doctors to administrators donate their skills and time.
The clinic has 3 exam rooms and even a small pharmacy...prescribing drugs
they say will be affordable too.
"We're participating with communicare so for 20 dollars a year our patients
will get their medicines", Allison said.
They're also accepting drug samples to distribute. But Allison says when it
comes to care...you'll get much more than you pay for.
