KIAWAH ISLAND -- The island's Town Council resolved on Tuesday to support running Interstate 526 across Johns Island and a derailed, limited access road.

The resolution supported I-526 "along any route with an interchange on Johns Island ... recognizing that an extension of I-526 does not replace but complements the need for a cross-island limited access road on Johns Island."

The greenway resolution supports that road because it "would greatly improve the roadway system on Johns Island thereby promoting the safety, health and general welfare of all citizens."

The greenway, a parkway-style limited-access road, has been sought by resort island groups as an improved route to and from Kiawah and Seabrook islands, bypassing two-lane country roads along Johns Island.

It has been stymied by opposition from some Johns Island residents who want improvements to existing roads and say the new road would accelerate unwanted development across an area of centuries-old farmland.

Both council votes were split identically: In favor were Mayor Steve Orban, council members Charles Lipuma and Alan Burnaford.

Against were council members Greg Vanderwerker and Fran Wermuth.
