Freshfields will be largest retail complex to serve resort community, Johns Island
It's springtime in the Lowcountry and plants aren't the only things sprouting.
Take Freshfields, for example, the shopping center complex beginning to rise from a former tomato field at the entrance to Kiawah and Seabrook islands.
When completed at this time next year, the development will include 175,000 square feet of retail and office space. It will have a grocery store, offices, an outdoor amphitheater and about 60 retail facilities. It will be the largest commercial complex to serve the resort community and Johns Island.
"This marks a turning point in the life of this unique project," said Charles P. "Buddy" Darby III, chairman and CEO of Kiawah Development Partners, the developer of Kiawah Island. "With the commencement of construction, Freshfields is being transformed from a dream into reality."
Some of the tenants for the mixed-use commercial complex include Newton Farms, an upscale gourmet supermarket that will anchor the facility; Charleston Renaissance Art Gallery; Baker Motor Co.; Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream; Wachovia; Bank of America; BC Liquors; Island Mercantile; Hege's Bistro; Island Cleaners; Lilly Pulitzer, a specialty women's resort wear clothier; Isola Shoes; McCutcheon's Men's Shop; and Leap Frog.
