Local gourmet supermarket Newton Farms recently won praise for its store
design.
Trade magazine Chain Store Age named the business one of its "Retail Stores
of the Year" for 2005.
The 33,000-square-foot store won first place in the supermarket category of
the annual design competition. Owned by Charleston-based grocer Piggly
Wiggly Carolina Co., Newton Farms opened last April in the Freshfields
Village shopping center at the entrances to Kiawah and Seabrook islands.
The design competition has almost 30 categories including supermarkets,
clothing shops, restaurants and department stores. There were seven entries
in the supermarket category, said Chain Store Age Editor Murray Forseter. A
jury of architects, designers and retailers picked the winners.
Newton Farms was singled out for its design reflecting the area's
agricultural heritage. The magazine noted the store's open, barn-like
setting and fixtures that resemble farm equipment and antique furniture. The
shopping space feels "intimate and personal" thanks to lowered ceilings and
earth tones, the magazine said.
Newton Farms is a new, more upscale, concept for Piggly Wiggly Carolina,
which operates more than 100 Piggly Wiggly stores in South Carolina and
coastal Georgia. The company may open additional Newton Farms stores in the
future, including one in a high-end shopping and residential complex under
construction in Myrtle Beach, company officials have said.
