Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Cougar Point has been selected as the 2007
course of the year by the South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association.
Criteria for the honor are: exceptional quality of the course; exceptional
quality of the management; outstanding contribution to the community; and
significant contribution to the game.
Cougar Point will represent South Carolina in the National Golf Course
Owners Association annual judging, an honor previously won by the Ocean
Course.
Cougar Point head professional Ric Ferguson said it is an honor for the
entire resort, but especially for course superintendent Brad French and
assistant golf professional Blake Cathey. Ferguson noted that French is one
of four certified golf course superintendents in the Charleston area, while
Cathey is one of only six PGA professionals in the U.S. (Osprey Point head
pro Jim Kelecihi being another) who is certified in all six areas of the PGA
of America.
Ferguson cited the day-to-day conditioning of Cougar Point and the fact that
it'll soon receive Audubon Sanctuary certification. He said the course has
been involved in a number of "Play Golf America" initiatives and has
partnered in the Kiawah Island-Sea Island Junior Golf Program.
