March 31, 2008

Kiawah is overcast this morning, and just a bit chilly. Though the lion winds of March are not in evidence, the cool weather probably would not be called a lamb exit!

Weather: It is 52 degrees at 9:10 this morning.  It does not look like the cooler weather will continue this week, but it won't be exactly toasty either. Highs today in the low sixties, with a 60% chance of showers. Tonight's low should be in the upper fifties with a 40% chance of rain.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count Spotted at various times & places around Kiawah during the week-end: four great blue herons, four anoles, five American alligators, about a dozen hooded mergansers, eight white-tailed deer, three raccoons, two double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

March 28, 2008 Week-end Edition

It is sunny and gorgeous on Kiawah this morning. Here we are at the end of March - hard to believe, isn't it?  The question is, will March go out like a lion or a lamb?

Patience? Marci Kenney sent this photo.  The alligator seems to be looking straight at the camera, don't you think?

Island News: The KICA Mail List will be down all day on Sunday, March 30th for maintenance. The list is being changed over from the xxx@kiawah-owners.org address to the association's new address: xxx@kica.us. Once the list is back up on Monday, future list messages should be sent to the new address of kicalist@kica.us.

Week-end Weather: It is 63 degrees at 9:05 Friday morning.  We may receive some rain over the week-end, so get outside to play today if you can! Highs Friday in the low seventies, lows in the upper fifties.  The chance of rain begins Saturday, with a 20% chance during the day and 30% in the evening.  Highs in the mid-sixties, lows in the low fifties.  Sunday brings a 20% chance of showers, with highs in the low sixties, lows in the low fifties.

March 27, 2008

Kiawah is sunny and warm this morning. It looks like a marvelous day to get outside and play! Yesterday's fabulous weather had folks young and old playing outside. There were bikers and joggers, beachgoers and strollers...terrific to see so many people out enjoying activities. Will you be able to enjoy today's wonderful weather?

Weather: It is 61 degrees at 9:05 this morning.  Once again Mother Nature has seen fit to send us a fabulous day! Today's high should be near seventy, the low tonight near sixty.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count One yellow-bellied sapsucker, one American alligator, two white-tailed deer, two raccoons, two double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

March 26, 2008

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning, and a bit warmer than the past few days. It's another beautiful day on the island!

This is the time of year when our lovely live oaks become the scourge of gardens - and gardeners! March's "lion" winds have scattered the dead leaves everywhere. And except for an hour or two when the yard looks nice, raking does not do much good! The leaves just seem to keep coming down. On the other hand, the Bradford pear trees certainly look beautiful with their white blossoms bursting out all over.

Weather: It is 52 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  A perfect spring day is headed our way! Highs near seventy, tonight's low near fifty.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count Two American alligators, four white-tailed deer, two raccoons, two double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

March 25, 2008

Kiawah is beautiful and sunny this morning, but downright chilly! It seems Mother Nature is not content to allow full blown spring to arrive just yet - so little reminders of winter chill are sprinkled through our days.  Yet there is no denying that spring is arriving, and soon here to stay!

Spring
The air is like a butterfly
With frail blue wings.
The happy earth looks at the sky
And sings.

Weather: It is 44 degrees at 9:25 this morning.  Though we are chilly this morning, it will warm up throughout the day. Today's high should be near sixty, lows tonight in the mid-forties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count Two Carolina chickadees, one American alligator, two white-tailed deer, two raccoons, two double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

March 24, 2008

It is cloudy on Kiawah this morning, and quite a bit cooler than recent days.  This past week-end saw loads of folks out & about enjoying the warm weather. The bike paths and the beach were both quite busy.  There were even a few intrepid souls in the water yesterday.  It is doubtful those folks will venture into the water today though, don't you think?

Weather: It is 47 degrees at 9:10 this morning.  Hopefully this is the last blast of winter weather!  Highs today are supposed to be near sixty, lows in the upper thirties tonight.  ** PLANT WATCH **

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count Spotted at various times & places around Kiawah during the week-end: two anoles, three American alligators, two great blue herons, seven white-tailed deer, two raccoons, two double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

March 21, 2008  Week-end Edition

Kiawah is sunny again this morning, with nary a cloud in sight. The birds are singing joyfully, and all seems right with our little island.

Astronomy 101: Tonight is the Full Worm Moon, so named by the native Americans because as the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter.

I'm ignoring you... Mickey Ball shares today's photo.  Mickey is a member of the Kiawah Island Photography Club, so perhaps she will share more photos in the days to come.

Week-end Weather: It is 57 degrees at 9:15 Friday morning.  We have a terrific week-end headed our way!  Friday's high should be in the mid-sixties, lows in the low fifties. Highs Saturday are supposed to be in the low seventies, the lows in the low fifties.  Sunday should bring us a high in the mid-sixties, with lows in the mid-forties.  There is a 20% chance of showers Sunday night.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count Two anoles (does that make them anoli?) one American alligator, one great blue heron, one white-tailed deer, two raccoons, two double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

March 20, 2008

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning, and the storms of last night have vanished. The rain and winds may have ceased, but they left evidence of their passing - palm fronds and oak leaves are scattered everywhere!  Hopefully the rain eliminated much of the pollen that has coated things in recent days. The sunshine is back in plenty of time for the week-end!

Weather: It is 56 degrees at 9:05 this morning.  It should be a bit cooler today than yesterday, but at least the rain has gone! Highs in the upper sixties, lows in the upper forties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count One anole, one Clouded Sulphur butterfly,  two American alligators, one great blue heron, three white-tailed deer, two raccoons, two double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

March 19, 2008

Kiawah is sunny this morning, though there are still clouds floating lazily through the sky. Today should be a fabulous day, if a bit windy.  It may not be so good for golf or tennis though, unless you can hit through 30 mile per hour breezes!

Did you know? Starting March 14th, dogs are no longer allowed off their leash while on the beach.  The "leash season" ends November 1st.

Weather: It is 65 degrees at 9:10 this  morning.  We have a wind advisory for most of the day, with gusts possibly reaching 40 mph. An umbrella is not going to do much good today, is it? Today's high should be near seventy with a 20% chance of rain. Lows tonight in the upper fifties with an 80% chance of showers.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count One American alligator, one great blue heron, one Carolina chickadee, three white-tailed deer, two raccoons, two double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

March 17, 2008    Happy St. Patrick's Day

Kiawah is sunny and gorgeous this morning - the leprechauns brought us a fabulous day!

St. Patrick's Day - did you know? Irish American immigrants brought Saint Patrick's Day to the United States. The first civic and public celebration of Saint Patrick's Day in the 13 colonies took place in Boston in 1737. The first celebration of Saint Patrick's Day in New York City was held at the Crown and Thistle Tavern in 1756. In 1780, General George Washington, who commanded soldiers of Irish descent in the Continental Army, allowed his troops a holiday on March 17. This event became known as The St. Patrick's Day Encampment of 1780. Today, Saint Patrick's Day is widely celebrated in the United States by Irish and non-Irish alike. Many people, regardless of ethnic background, wear green-colored clothing and items. Traditionally, those who are caught not wearing green are pinched.

Island News: More than 600 people attended KICA's Celebrate Kiawah event Saturday evening.

Week-end Weather: It is 54  degrees at 9:05 Friday morning.  Our week-end looks to be a good one, with only a small chance of showers.  Highs Friday near seventy, lows in the mid-fifties with a 20% chance of rain. March 11, 2008

Kiawah is partly sunny this morning, with a slight chill in the air. March doesn't seem to be following it's normal lion/lamb pattern, does it?  We seem to have skipped the lion part thank goodness!

A little spring poetry...

Spring

March wind upon my face,

Nubby lambs, shamrock lace,

Dancing kites soaring high,

Bold sunlight in azure sky -

Ah, yes, now I remember...

Spring awakening the world.

The week-end was quite busy, as loads of people spent time outdoors enjoying the sunshine and warm temperatures.  The golf courses were packed, as were the bike paths and the beach.  Did you manage to get outside and play?
