January 31, 2008

Kiawah is back to her sunny self once again. Clouds are supposed to start rolling in this afternoon though, so watch for possible showers later today.

Sandcastle  Thanks to Bob Struble for sharing this sandcastle photo.  There are not too many of them on Kiawah's beach right now, but soon! Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

Weather: It is 47 degrees at 9:10 this morning. We are supposed to have a mixed bag of weather today, starting with sunshine and warmth, then moving to rain and gusty winds. Highs in the upper fifties with a 40% chance of rain. Lows tonight in the mid-fifties with an 80% chance of showers.

January 30, 2008

It is overcast on Kiawah this morning. After a couple of days of decidedly un-January weather, it would seem we are back to normal gray winter skies.  But at least it will be fairly warm!

Weather: It is 55 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Look for a 20% chance of rain this morning, clearing up a bit by this evening. Highs in the low sixties, but temperatures should drop by this afternoon. Tonight's low is supposed to be in the low forties.

January 29, 2008

Kiawah is mostly sunny this morning. It will be a terrific day to build up your sunshine reserves, as the temperatures hit the sixties again.  Don't you just love Kiawah?

Astronomy 101: For any budding astronomers in our audience... Asteroid 2007 TU24 is flying past Earth this week at a distance of only 334,000 miles. It will be close enough for amateur astronomers to photograph through mid-sized backyard telescopes. The closest approach is tonight, as it glides through the constellations Andromeda and Cassiopeia glowing like a 10th magnitude star. Click here for coordinates and a low-resolution radar image of the approaching rock.

Weather: It is 49 degrees at 9:15 this morning. We should have a nice warm day today, as the high reaches the mid-sixties! Lows tonight in the mid-fifties with a 60% chance of showers.

January 28, 2008

Once again we have a lovely sunny day here on Kiawah. The high temperature will be near sixty today, (six? SIX? Yes, sixties!) so if you missed getting outside yesterday, you have another chance. What a nice day for January! J

Weather: It is 42 degrees at 9:05 this morning. I think most folks like that a bit better than 31 degrees!  Highs today near sixty, lows in the low forties.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count Spotted at various times & places around Kiawah during the week-end: six female and two male white-tailed deer, dozens and dozens of American robins, ten brown pelicans, five double-crested cormorants, one raccoon, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

January 25, 2008 Week-end Edition

It is beautiful and sunny on Kiawah this morning, but do NOT go outside!  Or at least not without a winter coat. Mother Nature has plopped us squarely back into winter, complete with frigid temperatures. This cold is expected to last through most of the week-end, with normal temps returning early next week.

Island News: May 7, 2008 is this year's Habitat for Humanity Women's Build Day. It is part of "Women's" Build Week. So ladies, join your neighbors and help build a house! Please click here for details and contact information.

Week-end Weather: It is 31 degrees at 9:05 Friday morning. That's no joke!  We have had a 20 degree temperature swing since yesterday morning.  Highs Friday in the mid-forties, lows in the upper thirties.  Saturday will bring a 40% chance of rain along with a high in the upper forties. Lows in the upper thirties Saturday night.  We hope to see the mid-fifties on Sunday, with lows in the mid-thirties.  ** Plant Watch **

January 24, 2008

Kiawah is overcast this morning, but we have received no rain. Hope you can get outside to play today, because starting tomorrow it is going to be downright cold by Kiawah standards!

Did you see the moon last night?  It was a  glowing amber ball in the sky, and at times was surrounded by floating clouds.  Though not the full moon any longer, it certainly seemed to be.  Lovely...

Sea Oats with Full Moon Bob Struble uses a backdrop of Kiawah's gorgeous evening colors to highlight sea oats on the dunes.  Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

Weather: It is 51 degrees at 9:05 this morning. Though it is gray outside, no rain is called for today.  We shall see...  Highs in the low sixties, lows tonight in the low thirties.  ** Plant Watch **

We are back to sunshine on Kiawah this morning! We did receive some particularly loud thunder late last night, complete with accompanying rain and winds.  But all is beautiful this morning.

Weather: It is 50 degrees at 9:10 this morning. A glorious day is in store for us! Look for a high near sixty today. Lows tonight in the upper forties with a 30% chance of rain.

January 22, 2008

Kiawah is overcast this morning, but far warmer than recent mornings! The squirrels are going crazy this morning - it looks like they are playing tag around the oak tree.  Perhaps they are enjoying a brief respite from winter weather too?

Island News: The water on Falcon Point, Summer Island & Shell Creek will be out of service today from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. This outage will allow installation of a valve on the main line in preparation for a major repair to the water line servicing the area. Please contact Becky Dennis from Kiawah Island Utilities at (843) 768-0641 for additional information.

Astronomy 101: Tonight is the Full Wolf Moon. The name was given by the Indians who heard wolf packs howling hungrily outside their villages during the cold and deep snows of midwinter. It was also sometimes referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Some called it the Full Snow Moon, but most tribes applied that name to the next Moon.

Weather: It is 42 degrees at 9:10 this morning. We should be near our normal January temperatures today. The high should be in the upper fifties with a 20% chance of rain. Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-forties with a 50% chance of showers.

It is gorgeous and sunny on Kiawah this morning.  We will still be below normal temperatures today, but should warm back up to the upper fifties by tomorrow.

So how did you like all the rain we received over the week-end?  Many of us had standing water in our yards on Saturday, and some on Sunday too!  We certainly needed the rain though.

January 17, 2008

It is overcast and raining on Kiawah this morning. The rain began late and continued throughout the night. Luckily for us it warmed up, so unlike our neighbors inland we received only rain.  Columbia and Camden received snow and sleet.  Yikes!  There is a lot of standing water on the island this morning, so please be careful if you go out & about.

Kiawah is gorgeous, cool, and sunny this morning. Despite the predictions we didn't receive much rain over the week-end, though enough to give the ground a good drenching.

A Kiawah Invasion: by robins that is! If you watch out your window for very long you should see dozens and dozens of robins.  They are gorging themselves on the palm berries to help fuel up for their migration.

Kiawah Babies During warmer months folks who have sharp eyes can spot young white-tailed deer.  These two are well-camouflaged, but are still on the lookout for trouble.  Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

January 11, 2008 Week-end Edition

January 10, 2008

Kiawah is gorgeous again this morning. We never received the predicted rain last night, so the island is still sunny and warm. Thundershowers are predicted for tomorrow, so perhaps outdoor activities should happen today.  Will you get outside to enjoy this amazing weather?

Island News: Once again there will be traffic delays today on the Kiawah Island Parkway as workers continue repair of the sinkhole just west of Oyster Rake Road. Today a section of the Kiawah Island Parkway will be closed in order to do the necessary repairs. A detour will be set up following a route from the Parkway thru Kiawah Beach Drive, Greensward Road and Surfwatch Drive. Members that live on Oyster Rake Road will need to proceed to the Surfwatch Road/Kiawah Island Parkway intersection to enter or exit the detoured area. If you have any questions please call Connie Samford at (843) 768-2315 or via e-mail at  connie.samford@kica.us

Moonrise over the marsh Everyone raves about sunrises and sunsets on Kiawah.  But sometimes the moon provides a beautiful vista too!  Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

January 7, 2008

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning, and far warmer than last week's mornings!  This morning the temperature is 20 degrees warmer than Friday morning.  While we are not complaining about warm, we are beginning to wonder about staying healthy with all these temperature swings.  Should we all drink lots of orange juice and get plenty of sleep, just in case?

Weather: It is 52 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Yes, ANOTHER twenty degree change for our morning weather!  Highs today in the low seventies, lows in the mid-fifties.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count Spotted at various times & places around Kiawah during the week-end: four male and two female white-tailed deer, one American alligator sunning at Osprey Point, six double-crested cormorants, two great blue herons, one very chilly raccoon, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

January 4, 2008 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is sunny again this morning, and at 35 degrees, just a tad warmer than the past few mornings. It looks like our week-end will bring us warmer weather, so let's all get outside and play, shall we?

Astronomical Event: For those of you interested in watching the stars (the ones in the sky that is!) try catching a glimpse of Comet Holmes. It was discovered on Nov. 6, 1892, by astronomer Edwin Holmes while he was making observations of the Andromeda Galaxy. What's so interesting about this particular comet?  It seems to explode every 71 days! No one knows why Holmes occasionally explodes. Theories range from tiny moonlets crashing into the comet's icy surface to great comet-caverns collapsing under the stress of sunlight. Finding the comet is easy. After sunset, take your binoculars outside and scan the northern constellation Perseus. Holmes is readily visible as a big pale fuzzball near the variable star Algol.

Week-end Weather: It is 35 degrees at 9:10 Friday morning. We are starting to warm back up a bit, a trend that will continue throughout the week-end.  Highs Friday in the low fifties, lows in the upper thirties.  The high will be in the upper fifties on Saturday, with a low in the mid-forties.  Sunday's temperatures will be more like our normal weather, with a high in the mid-sixties, and a low in the upper forties.

January 3, 2008

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning, but once again it is downright COLD! Our taste of winter continues today, as the cold front remains.  The weather people say that the wind chill (when was the last time you heard about wind chill on Kiawah?) is 10 degrees this morning.  10?!?!?!  What's up with that?

Weather: It is 30 degrees at 9:20 this morning. It will be cold today, but hang in there!  Temperatures are slated to be in the fifties tomorrow.  Highs today in the low forties, lows tonight in the upper twenties.  ** PLANT WATCH **

Today's Kiawah Critter Count Two white-tailed deer, two double-crested cormorants, one very chilly raccoon, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

January 2, 2008

Kiawah is sunny and gorgeous this morning, but COLD! And sorry, but there are no apologies to our Northern neighbors either.  Normally saying Kiawah is cold elicits comments from property owners outside of South Carolina, informing us that we don't know what cold is.  HOWEVER... tonight it will be in the twenties, so I think we are justified in shivering, at least a little!

Weather: It is 33 degrees at 9:30 this morning. It should be pleasant and sunny today. Highs in the low forties, lows in the mid-twenties. TWENTIES? YIKES!  ** PLANT WATCH **

January 1, 2008 - Happy New Year!

Our first day of 2008 has dawned sunny and beautiful. It is another lovely Kiawah morning! Here's hoping that you are feeling well enough to appreciate the lovely weather - and are not *too* hung over from celebrating out on the town last night!

A Cedar Waxwing We often see cedar waxwings from the side or front, but have you ever seen one from the back? The markings are beautiful! Do you have a photo you would like to share? Click here to send it.

Weather: It is 54 degrees at 9:15 this morning. It should be pleasant and sunny today. Highs in the low sixties, lows in the low thirties.  Yes, LOW THIRTIES!  If you have some tender plants, you might want to cover them this evening. ** PLANT WATCH **
