Kiawah is sunny this morning, with a slight chill in the air. It should be a perfect day to be outside, and this evening should be warm enough to enjoy the lunar eclipse.  Grab your camera and head out to see it!

Astronomy 101: Tonight is the Full Snow Moon.  It gets it's name because the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, so native tribes of the north and east most often called  it the Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult.  We get a bonus tonight, as there is a lunar eclipse around 10:00 p.m.

Once again we have sunshine on Kiawah this morning. Mid-February and our island is warm and sunny.  Now who can complain about that?

Some folks were disappointed with yesterday morning's rain, but the island really needed it!  Spring will be here soon, and our plants and animals could use the water.

Kiawah is gray and rainy this morning, but at least it is a bit warmer. Strong winds began last night, and continue to blow across the island.  It looks like we will have quite a mess on our hands when the rain stops - palm fronds, branches, and leaves are already scattered everywhere.

Though the rain has arrived, the week-end was quite nice.  Many folks were out & about on the bike paths, riding, walking, and running, while golfers took advantage of the fabulous weather to get in a few mid-winter rounds.

Kiawah is sunny and bright this morning, but cold! Blustery winds blew across the island for a large part of the night, apparently blowing us BAM! - smack dab back into the middle of winter.  Luckily the temperature today should be in the upper fifties, so we won't be too chilly.

It is overcast on Kiawah this morning, but we have no rain right now. We did receive some showers last night however.  And thank goodness for that!  Due to the exceptionally warm weather we have been having lately, some folks on the island have been suffering from winter allergies. The rain washed away a good bit of pollen last night, so hopefully they will get a bit of a break.

Did you know? Saturday is Groundhog Day, that crazy holiday where we think an odd mammal can predict our weather.  Punxsutawney Phil and Gobblers Knob, Pennsylvania are famous! If you like Phil, check out the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club by clicking here. Here are a few fun facts about Groundhog Day:

  • During Prohibition Phil threatened to impose 60 weeks of winter on the community if he wasn't allowed a drink

  • Phil appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show in 1995.

  • The groundhog tradition stems from similar beliefs associated with Candlemas Day and the days of early Christians in Europe.
