August 29, 2008 Week-end Edition
Kiawah is mostly sunny on this Friday morning. We
are headed into Labor Day week-end, traditionally thought of as the
end of summer. Are you ready for fall? More importantly,
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? Yes, it's that time again.
The time when it seems like half the country is caught up in NOT
politics and conventions, but tail-gating and football. Let the games
begin!
Island News: Rep. Henry Brown has withdrawn his request
for a hearing on HR. 6389 regarding federal flood insurance for
Captain Sam's spit. See the Links of Interest section below for
articles relating to this bill.
Week-end Weather: It is 81 degrees at 9:10 Friday morning. It
looks like tropical storms Gustav and Hanna will be no where in sight
for our holiday week-end! Highs Friday should be in the mid-eighties,
lows in the mid-seventies, both with a 20% chance of rain.
Saturday's high should be in the upper eighties, also with a 20%
chance of showers. Lows in the low seventies. Sunday is
supposed to bring a high in the mid-eighties, again with a 20% chance
of showers. Lows Sunday night in the low seventies.

It is nice and sunny on Kiawah this morning. We
have a lovely Thursday in store for us, with plenty of warm weather to
enjoy. How will you spend your day today?
Did you know? Charleston County residents can go to
www.ccpl.org and apply for a library
card electronically without the need to visit a nearby branch and fill
out the traditional paper application. When county residents
submit their registration online, a new library card is mailed to
them. Then, on their next visit to a library branch or the
bookmobile, they simply show the card and a photo ID to activate the
card.
Weather: It is 81 degrees at 9:05 this morning. We
have just a slight chance of showers today, and the week-end is
shaping up nicely! Highs today should be in the upper eighties with a

Kiawah is sunny this morning and already quite warm.
Despite a slight chance of showers in the forecast, it seems that
today will be a perfect summer day. How will you spend your day today?
Swimming at the beach? Riding your bicycle? At the pool? Whatever your
choice, you should have a wonderful day to get outside and play!
Town News: There will be a special Town Council meeting
today at 2:00 p.m.
The development of Captain Sam's spit will be discussed.

If you look closely you can see the seed in the male's beak.

It is sunny and warm on Kiawah this morning. It is also
very humid. So once again we start our day with a giant dose of
humidity. Isn't it humility we are supposed to have in abundance? Quick! Someone contact the letter police. Our "l" has been stolen and
replaced with a "d"! Today should be a good day to test out the ocean
waters, or better still, the pool. Hot and steamy is the perfect
excuse for some soothing cool water. Or perhaps a large serving of
something C-O-L-D?
Town News: Wednesday
August 27th there will be a special Town Council meeting at 2:00 p.m. The
development of Captain Sam's spit will be discussed.

Kiawah is sunny at last! Tropical Storm Fay dumped
loads of rain on us this week-end - one person reported 8 inches in
the rain gauge on their back deck. YIKES! There was
standing water on some portions of the roads, so folks had to be
especially careful driving, even after the rain stopped. It
seems that right now we have a brief respite from Fay, which has now
been downgraded to a tropical depression. But don't put your
umbrella away just yet! Look for more showers this week as she
loops back across South Carolina.
Cardinals

It is sunny and cool on Kiawah this morning. We
received some rain over the week-end, but fortunately it was mostly in
the late afternoon or evening. It does not appear that we will
be as lucky this week though, as rain from Tropical Storm Fay will
most likely affect our weather.

interesting kite, and the highest flying kite.
Astronomy 101: The Full Sturgeon Moon
will arive Saturday evening. The fishing tribes are given credit for
the naming of this Moon because sturgeon were most readily caught
during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because,
as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze.

It is mostly sunny on Kiawah this morning. Kiawah was

a wet one. Better grab your book and start reading!
Did you know? Hummingbirds, which artist
John J. Audubon called "glittering fragments of the rainbow," are once
again darting around flowers and feeders in South Carolina. If
you landscape with flowers or hang a feeder, you invite hummingbirds
to lunch! For more information on ruby-throated hummingbirds, write

in the coming weeks.
Astronomy 101: The Perseids meteor shower is still in town
tonight. The source of the Perseids is Comet
Swift-Tuttle, which has littered the August portion of Earth's orbit
with space dust. The Perseids are one of the most prolific meteor
showers of the year. They could appear in numbers as high as
60 per hour. The best displays will be seen from rural areas with dark
skies. Sky maps, photos and more information are available
here. Get
comfortable in your lawn chair, and gaze directly overhead to catch
some of this meteor shower.

busy week-end on the island, as loads of folks took advantage of the
fabulous weather. The bike paths, golf courses and beach were
all very popular.

for the next couple of days. The source of the Perseids is Comet
Swift-Tuttle, which has littered the August portion of Earth's orbit

showers of the year. It should reach its peak during the next 24
hours. Forecasters say the best time to look is during the dark hours
before dawn on Tuesday, August 12th. The glaring Moon sets around 2:00
a.m., so that's when the Perseids could appear in numbers as high as

Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports
that there are 223 nests on our beach as of August 7th. WOW!
That is a mere 2 nests less than our recent record of 225 in 2003.
The mamas are still nesting, so perhaps they will beat it!
Hatching is in full swing too, so be on the lookout for turtles.
More Turtle News: Kiawah's very first leatherback nest
was evaluated this morning. Leatherbacks are endangered tropical
sea turtles who do not normally nest this far north. Turtle
Patrol found 9 hatched and 13 unhatched eggs while roughly 100 people
watched intently - all hoping to spot a baby leatherback!
However no babies were present. Hopefully they all made it to
the ocean on their own. So Kiawah's first leatherback nest was a
success!
Week-end Weather: It is 75 degrees at 9:05 Friday morning.
You probably are not going to believe this, but there is NOT a heat

Island News: A pond on the south side of
the first overpass will be excavated to remove accumulated sediment.
Because of this, traffic will be rerouted on the Kiawah Island Parkway between Kiawah Beach Drive and Surfwatch for approximately three hours

director of lakes management, at 843-708-3608 or

It is mostly cloudy on Kiawah this morning. Apparently
everyone needs to get outside now to enjoy the sunshine, as certainly
looks like it is going to rain- again! Even if we humans are not
particularly enjoying the rain, the birds certainly are. Take a look
at the lagoons and ponds as you move about the island - you should see
many different types of birds. Egrets, herons, ibis, wood storks ...
all of them are undoubtedly reveling in the showers we have been
experiencing!

else would you expect from August?

annual sales tax holiday begins Aug. 1st. It is designed to reward
consumers with tax breaks on their back-to-school purchases. Certain

state taxes. The discounts will last through the weekend, until
midnight on Sunday.
