It is sunny and cool on Kiawah this morning. Today may just be the definition of a perfect spring day - low humidity, warm sunshine, and a slight cool breeze - all the right components for a lovely day!

Bluebirds are back on Kiawah - if you haven't already done so, now is the time to clean, repair, or put up new homes for them.  Not only are bluebirds  voracious insect eaters, they sing wonderful songs as well.  Each pair of bluebirds can produce up to three broods per year, so get those bird houses in shape!  For more information about bluebirds, contact the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources at (803) 734-3886, or click here.

Play tennis?  Walk?  Whatever you decide you are sure to enjoy it!

The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol has begun preparations for this season's loggerhead nesting and hatching.  Nearly 60 folks attended the orientation meeting last week.  They reviewed some new information about nesting and hatching procedures, picked up their 2008 t-shirts, and mingled with their teammates.  If you would like to volunteer for turtle patrol, please e-mail the webmaster.

Kiawah is bathed in sunshine this morning, and warm too. We are nearly halfway through April (already?), well on our way to May. Spring has certainly arrived!

April
Rain has such fun in April, it patters through the trees
Talking to all the leaf buds and robins that it sees
It splashes through the puddles and skips along the walks
Goes coasting down the grass blades and dandelion stalks
It dips in all the flowers and when the clouds blow by
It paints with flower colors a rainbow in the sky.

Kiawah is overcast and gray this morning, with a slight chill in the air. Could the clouds be part of the old "April showers bring May flowers" saying? Still, it is fairly warm, and Kiawah awaits the intrepid explorer! Here is a little known suggestion for any potential Columbus' out there: why not investigate the Kiawah Swamp Garden?

The Kiawah Swamp Garden is located on Turtle Beach Lane (accessible by bicycle). It is a secluded wetland garden, where you can usually see many alligators and turtles, as well as several varieties of Kiawah's native plants. Can you locate it?

April Fool's... Only a few of you noticed that Bob Struble played an excellent April Fool's joke with his photo yesterday.  Look closely at the cat, and you will see quite a long tail, no stripes, and lanky legs.  The kitty in the photo is a cougar, NOT a bobcat!

Weather: It is 65 degrees at 8:40 this morning.  Once more there is a 50/50 chance of showers... Today's high should be in the low seventies, the low tonight in the upper fifties.  There is a 50% chance of rain both today and tonight.

April 1, 2008

The sun cannot decide whether to stay out or go in this morning!  It is partly sunny on Kiawah this morning.  April arrived in the midst of some brief showers last night.

April Fool... The origins of April Fool's Day are a matter of much debate. It is likely a relic of the once common festivities held on the vernal equinox, which began on the 25th of March, old New Year's Day, and ended on the 2nd of April.

Weather: It is 65 degrees at 9:10 this morning.  A 50/50 chance of rain may not bode well for the beachgoers, but a little spring rain would be nice! Highs today in the low seventies, lows tonight in the low sixties, both with a 50% chance of rain.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count Three hooded mergansers, one great blue heron, two white-tailed deer, one raccoon, two double-crested cormorants, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.
