Kiawah is a bit warmer this morning and definitely more humid.  The sun is peeking through the clouds and seems ready to keep away the showers, at least for a while.

When was the last time you were on the beach down by the Ocean Course?  The hurricanes may have passed us by, but the rain and winds that they did visit upon us wreaked havoc on our beach.  The erosion is particularly bad past the Beach Club.  Some places by the Ocean Course drop-off five feet or more from the dunes to the beach. L

It is 75 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  The high today is supposed to be in the low eighties, with a 20% chance of showers.  Tonight's low should be in the upper sixties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One osprey by Bufflehead Drive, one five-lined skink scampering along the Allee of Oaks, one American alligator at Osprey Point golf course, dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive, one great blue heron along Governor's Drive, and one mama raccoon with four babies.

September 29, 2004

We have another fabulous morning on Kiawah this morning. Not much of a breeze, but it is cool and beautiful.  The sunshine is out in full force, and it will be a wonderful day to get outside and play!

Last night's Full Harvest Moon was simply amazing!  It began as an incandescent orange circle hanging low over the marsh.  It seemed so close that if you just reached out you could touch it.  As it rose it turned a brilliant white light in the sky.

It is 68 degrees at 9:00 this morning.  Today's temperature should reach the mid-eighties, while tonight is supposed to be in the mid-sixties.  Sleeping with the windows open anyone?

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two female white-tailed deer along the Kiawah Island Parkway, one American alligator sunning itself on the Cougar Point golf course, one male cardinal, a pair of blue jays, dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive, one great blue heron near Glossy Ibis, and one mama raccoon with four babies.

September 28, 2004

This morning is a terrific kite flying time on Kiawah! There were some very strong winds all night last night, and there are still some slight gusts this morning. Once again our Camelot has escaped nature's wrath.  We are so lucky!  We will probably even save money on our fall tree trimming budget. J

Tonight is the Full Harvest Moon, so named because at the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this moon. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans, and wild rice the chief Indian staples are now ready for gathering.

It is 75 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  The high today is supposed to be in the low eighties.  Tonight's low should be in the low seventies.  Tropical Storm Jeanne has passed us by!

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One female Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker, six female white-tailed deer all behind the Vanderhorst gate, dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive, two great blue herons along Governor's Drive, and one mama raccoon with four babies.

September 27, 2004

Kiawah has no sunshine this morning! The island was buffeted by a thunderstorm last night, complete with strong winds and a copious amount of rain.  It is not currently raining, but we are getting a drizzle here and there...

Joe Zambito shares today's photo.  Kiawah's surf is pretty whipped up with Jeanne so near.

It is 75 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  Today's temperature should be near eighty, with tonight in the low seventies.  Strong wind gusts are expected as Tropical Storm Jeanne makes its way across the South.  There is a chance of tornadoes, and a 70% chance of more showers as well.

FYI: Jeanne has been downgraded to a tropical storm. Kiawah will most likely see some showers today and this evening from the storm.  Click here for the map, here for the NOAA web site, or here for the Town of Kiawah Island web site.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two male white-tailed deer, one on Marsh Island and one on Flyway Drive, three snowy egrets, one great white egret, one great blue heron, and one raccoon

September 26, 2004

There is an odd sort of quiet on Kiawah this morning. No doubt this is due to the impending storm... It is completely overcast, and lots of rain is on the way.  If you have outside chores, better get to them early, else you will find yourself soaked!

It is 74 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  The high today is supposed to reach the mid-eighties with a 50% chance of showers.  Tonight's low should be in in the low seventies with a 60% chance of rain.

FYI: Hurricane Jeanne made landfall in Florida earlier this morning. Kiawah should see showers late tonight and tomorrow from the storm.  Click here for the map, here for the NOAA web site, or here for the Town of Kiawah Island web site.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Four wood storks, one male cardinal, one tricolored heron, one black vulture, two female white-tailed deer on Marsh Island Drive, two anoles, and one mama raccoon with two babies.

September 25, 2004

We have another fabulously cool morning on Kiawah today. Though it is a tad overcast, it is truly beautiful this morning.  Will you get outside to play today?

Those of you on the island this week may have noticed seeing an increase in the number of deer that are out & about.  Fawns are traveling with their mothers, and with fewer visitors, the deer are more prone to be around.  PLEASE drive carefully.  We like to watch Kiawah's deer frolicking about, so let's keep them alive to play another day!

It is Yom Kippur today for our Jewish friends. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the most solemn day of the Jewish year. It is a day of fasting, reflection and prayers.

It is 70 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  Today's temperature should be in the upper seventies with a 20% chance of showers.  The low tonight is supposed to be in near seventy with a 30% chance of rain.

FYI: Tropical Storm Jeanne is closed to Florida now. It is still not certain that it will miss Kiawah, so please keep a close eye on it!  Click here for the map, here for the NOAA web site, or here for the Town of Kiawah Island web site.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bobcat, four female and one male white-tailed deer along Governor's Drive, one downy woodpecker on Marsh Island Drive,  one five-lined skink, one anole, and one mama raccoon with two babies.

September 24, 2004

The ocean breezes are soft and gentle on Kiawah this morning. The end of September is proving to be quite lovely.  The relatively low humidity and wonderfully cool temperatures for most of the past week have been a terrific respite from the storms.

Bob Struble shares today's photograph of another magnificent Kiawah sunset.  Have you seen one lately?

It is 70 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  The high today is supposed to be in the low eighties.  Tonight's low should be in the low seventies.

FYI: Tropical Storm Jeanne still seems to be headed for the southeast coast. Currently it is expected to make landfall in Florida, but as always, that is not completely certain.  Click here for the map, here for the NOAA web site, or here for the Town of Kiawah Island web site.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One downy woodpecker on Marsh Island Drive, one male cardinal, two great blue herons along Governor's Drive, one five-lined skink, three anoles, and one mama raccoon with four babies.

September 23, 2004

Kiawah is lovely this morning, with a slight breeze and loads of sunshine.  It is another incredibly wonderful September morning. Tough to believe that hurricane Jeanne could give us rain soon!

Have you noticed that the butterflies are back on Kiawah?  Every flower bank seems to be draped with butterfly wings.  Do you think the blossoms enjoy being so adored?

It is 69 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  Today's temperature should reach the mid-eighties, with the low tonight in the upper sixties.  Probably need to close those windows!

FYI: Tropical Storm Jeanne has stopped circling and is headed for the southeast coast. It would certainly appear that Kiawah will receive rain...AGAIN...at the very least.  Click here for the map or here for the NOAA web site.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One downy woodpecker, one pileated woodpecker, two five-lined skinks, one large male white-tailed deer, and one mama raccoon with two babies.

September 22, 2004

Kiawah is cool and breezy again this morning. So once again we have some fabulous weather to enjoy! It would seem that sunshine and low humidity will be the order of the day.

Happy Fall!  The fall equinox is today - Mabon for you Pagan folks.  That means that today the amount of daylight and darkness are exactly the same.  From this point forward, the days get shorter.

It is 63 degrees at 8:45 this morning.  The high today is supposed to be in the low eighties.  Tonight's low should be in the mid-sixties.

FYI: Tropical Storm Jeanne is still swirling around in a circle out to sea. None of the computer models seem to agree on just where it will ultimately land.  Click here for the map or here for the NOAA web site.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One downy woodpecker pecking away at a palm tree, two female white-tailed deer on Governor's Drive, two five-lined skinks, and one mama raccoon with two babies.

September 21, 2004

We have more fabulous weather on Kiawah this morning. The birds are serenading us while the squirrels scamper around gathering acorns.  Perhaps they too are happy about the incredible weather!

The hosting servers for the site were down all day yesterday, so no news was posted.  Our apologies for the "missed" Kiawah commentary!

There is just one word for Kiawah this morning...gorgeous!  A light breeze is blowing and it is nice and cool outside.  Leaving the windows open last night and waking up to the bird song is certainly a rare treat this early in September!  It looks like it will be the perfect "get outside and play day".  What fun thing are you going to treat yourself to today?

It is 64 degrees at 9:00 this morning.  The high today is supposed to be in the upper seventies.  Tonight's low should be near sixty.

Kiawah is absolutely fabulous this morning!  We have a very cool morning with hardly any humidity at all. The rain has gone, leaving behind cool breezes and temperatures for us this morning. It looks to be a marvelous day today, with plenty of sunshine.  How will you celebrate this terrific weather?  Tennis?  Golf? A long bike ride?  Whatever your choice, today is sure to be a good day for it!

It is 68 degrees at 9:00 this morning.  No that is NOT a typo!  Today's temperature should be in the low eighties, with tonight's low in mid-sixties.  There will probably be some windows open on the island tonight!

Looking outside this morning, you can see a golden glow on everything.  What do you suppose it could be?  SUNSHINE!  Yippee!  Today is the first time in over a week that Kiawah has been bathed with sunshine in the morning.  What will you do to soak up the sun today?

September 15, 2004

Kiawah is overcast again this morning. We awoke to light showers, and it looks as if more will be present throughout the day.   The golfers and tennis players on the island must be going nuts with all of this rain!  Is it even possible to get in a match or 18 holes with all this constant precipitation?

September 14, 2004

Kiawah is dreary and gray again this morning.  Though our Florida neighbors have certainly experienced far worse, this September has produced some nasty weather on Kiawah!  IF we don't receive some sunshine soon, we may have to rename Kiawah Island to the Kiawah Rain Forest!  Everything is quite soggy, and there is no let up from the rain in sight.  Galoshes anyone?

It is 70 degrees at 8:45 this morning.  We should once again have a high near eighty today.  Tonight is supposed to be in the low seventies.  There is a 70% chance of thunderstorms both today and tonight.

Hurricane Ivan

Ivan is in the Gulf of Mexico as of 4:00 a.m. this morning.  It is supposed to stay on its current track, headed for the mouth of the Mississippi, for the next 24 hours.

The island is starting to get quieter.  Vacationers have headed home and little ones have started school. Folks seem content to simply sit and rest.  Perhaps we are taking a brief breather before fall truly arrives?

It is 73 degrees at 8:15 this morning.  Today should see temperatures near eighty, with tonight near seventy.  There is a 40% chance of showers both today and tonight.

Hurricane Ivan

We have dreary gray skies on Kiawah this morning. It is a wee bit humid, but not too bad. Despite it being overcast, there are quite a few birds singing this morning.  One particularly vociferous cardinal seems determined to let everyone know he is around. His unmistakable song sounds loud and clear over the other birdsong.  Can you hear any birds where you are?

Turtle News: This photo is a success story!  This loggerhead is "our" turtle, since it was found stranded on Kiawah on April 9th of this year. The SC Aquarium rehabilitated it & released it back to the ocean on Seabrook yesterday morning.  Doesn't it look happy to be out of the hospital?  Click here to see more photos of the release.

It is a gray morning here on Kiawah.

This is beginning to sound like a broken record... overcast and gray.  It looks like the sun is going to stay hidden for a while yet, perhaps for most of the day, as we get some serious shower activity.

Kiawah is a bit less humid this morning. It looks like we might actually have a day without rain.  Shhhhh... don't tell anyone, or Mother Nature may yet decide to dump a little water on the island!

Eagle News: In case you have not yet heard... the large old pine where "our" eagles built their nest has fallen.  Apparently the combination of the high winds from all of the storms we have had recently, plus the weight of the nest, caused it to fall.  Let us hope that they re-build!  It would be a shame to miss seeing them every day.

** Happy Labor Day!**

It is a wet and windy Labor Day on  Kiawah is this year. Rain and wind look to keep any celebratory cook-outs inside for today.  Do you have plans for the holiday?

Did you know? The first Labor Day celebration was September 15, 1882 in New York City and was organized by the Central Labor Union. Oregon was the first state to pass a bill to designate Labor Day on February 21, 1887. It was first proposed as "a street parade to exhibit to the public the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations."  Congress made the first Monday in September an official Labor Day holiday on June 28, 1894.

Kiawah is beautiful this morning!  Perhaps the calm before the storm?  The sun is shining brightly, and the humidity is very low.  There is a slight breeze blowing in from the Atlantic, making this a cool, comfortable morning.  It would be a terrific day to walk or bike on the paths.  What will you do outside today?

It is a bit gloomy this morning on Kiawah.  It is gray and overcast, and there is not much of a breeze. More rain is forecasted for today, which is not a surprise, given Frances hanging about to the south of us.  Is your hurricane kit all set?  Have you found a good book to read during all this rain?  Or perhaps a movie or two?  Whatever your distraction, stay dry!
