October 31, 2004

We have a bit of fog on Kiawah this morning.  It should clear off soon and leave us with sunshine and a perfect fall day.

Happy Halloween

Did you know? "Soul food" has been at the heart of the mischief and merriment made on Halloween night for hundreds of years. We're not talking about ham hocks and collard greens either! The treats offered on October 31st can be traced to the ancient Celtic celebration of Samhain, a major pagan holiday that marked the start of the new year on their calendar. The November 1st festival was a time to gather the harvest and prepare for winter, but also when the souls of the dead returned to the earthly world - or so the Celts believed. To keep the ghosts at bay, the Celts would place offerings of food and drink outside their homes.

How was the Cinder Creek Oyster Roast last night? The weather was perfect for it, so hopefully everyone who attended had a wonderful time.

Reminder...  Daylight savings time ended early this morning.  Did you remember to "fall back"?

It is 68 degrees at 8:30 this morning. The high today should be near eighty.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-sixties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One male cardinal, one black vulture, two double-crested cormorants at Ibis Pond, two American alligators, two white-tailed deer next to Glossy Ibis Drive, and dozens of snowy egrets at the lagoon on Sea Marsh Drive.

October 30, 2004

What's that outside the window this morning?  SUNSHINE! J  We have lovely skies on Kiawah this morning. Although it is supposed to be a bit cloudy today, it is not supposed to rain.  So today should be a terrific day to enjoy the outdoors.  Perhaps you will bicycle on the paths today or take a walk on the beach?

The Cinder Creek Oyster Roast is tonight.  The event is sponsored by KICA, and will be a great time to meet & greet your neighbors while enjoying some terrific food.

Don't Forget!  Daylight savings time ends TONIGHT!  Be sure to "fall back" by moving  your clocks back one hour.  We all get an additional hour of sleep tonight... yea!

It is 66 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's temperature is supposed to be near eighty, with tonight's low in the mid-sixties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One anole who seemed determined to run INTO the house, four double-crested cormorants at Ibis and Willet Ponds, three American alligators, one great blue heron, two white-tailed deer next to Glossy Ibis Drive, and dozens of snowy egrets at the lagoon on Sea Marsh Drive.

October 29, 2004

One more overcast gray morning on Kiawah this morning. The temperature is quite nice however, so no excuses for staying inside all day!  What do you plan to do on this Friday?

The Kiawah Island Natural Habitat Conservancy has a beautiful photo on their web site that shows some of Kiawah's fall colors in all their glory.  Click here or the button to the right to take a peek.

Don't Forget!  Daylight savings time ends this week-end.  Early Sunday morning you should "fall back" and turn your clocks back an hour.  An additional hour of sleep will be oh so nice!

It is 67 degrees at 9:15 this morning. The high today should be in the low seventies with a 50% chance of showers.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the low sixties with a 40% chance of rain.

October 28, 2004

Kiawah is very overcast this morning. It seems that the prediction of a 20% chance of showers today will be quite accurate. That noise you hear outside is birds twittering noisily and squirrels playing tag up and down the oak trees.  What do you see outside your window this morning?

So much for the lunar eclipse last night!  While the full moon was visible for a short while, the clouds rolled in long before the eclipse began. And unfortunately they stuck around long enough that viewing it was impossible.

It is 67 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Today's temperature is supposed to be in the low seventies with a 20% chance of rain.  The low tonight should be near sixty with a 30% chance of showers.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Three American alligators at the Flyway spillway, two tiny anoles darting about in The Preserve, one osprey, three double-crested cormorants, two great blue herons, one white-tailed deer along Kiawah Island Club Drive, and four snowy egrets.

October 27, 2004

It is still cool on Kiawah this morning, though a bit warmer than it has been recently.  While it is overcast, it certainly looks to be a fabulous day to enjoy all Kiawah has to offer. The Governor's Club Tennis Championships are today - you could go cheer on a friend!  Or perhaps you are more of a participant than an observer? If so, why not hop on your bike and treat yourself to a "Tour de Kiawah"?

Astronomy 101: There are big astronomy happenings tonight... a full moon AND a total lunar eclipse!  Tonight is the Full Hunter's Moon. It gets its name because the leaves are falling and the deer fattened, so it is time to hunt. Since the fields have been reaped, hunters can easily see fox and the animals which have come out to glean.

During a total lunar eclipse, the moon turns from bright silver to bright orange to blood red to dark brown. The moon will enter Earth's shadow at 9:14 p.m. Totality begins at 10:23 p.m.; mid-eclipse is at 11:04 p.m.; totality ends at 11:45 p.m.; and the moon leaves the umbra at 12:54 Thursday morning.

It is 62 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The high today should be in the mid-seventies again.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-sixties with a 20% chance of showers.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One osprey at Ibis Pond, four double-crested cormorants, one great blue heron, five white-tailed deer along Governor's Drive, and six snowy egrets.

October 26, 2004

It is delightfully chilly on Kiawah this morning.  Just the sort of morning that makes you want to snuggle back under the covers with some hot chocolate.  But if you are more adventurous, why not check out Kiawah's bike paths or nature walks?  If you haven't yet stopped by the Conservancy's walk Maritime Forest Reserve and Nature Trail at 133 Conifer Lane, today would be a terrific opportunity!

Will you help? Someone with a particularly soft heart found some beautiful stray kittens at East Beach earlier this week.  They look to be about 10 weeks old, and are as cute and cuddly as only kittens can be.  There are tabbies and one lone black kitten. These are your best options for getting a "Kiawah Kitty" since you can't have a bobcat...  If you would love a Kiawah Kitty for your very own, please click here to find out about one!

It is 59 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Today;s temperature is supposed to be in the mid-seventies again, with tonight in the mid-fifties.

October 24, 2004

Once again we have a cool start on Kiawah this morning. The 20% chance of showers never materialized last night.  Apparently they were delayed a bit, as the island is gray and overcast this morning.  If it does rain, today's symphony event will be held inside in The Sanctuary's Grand Oaks Ballroom.

Will you help? It is very cool, but sunny on Kiawah this morning. It was pretty chilly again last night, but terrific sleeping weather... This morning the hibiscus on the front porch looks a little frostbitten - not likely, but perhaps it will perk up in this lovely sunshine.  This weather this morning is perfect for heading down to Night Heron Park to check out KICA's Cars in the Park event!  See you there!

Did you know?  Tonight is the last night of the Orionids meteor showers. Relatively small showers, they have roughly 15 to 25 meteors per hour.  For best viewing, take a beach towel or a lawn chair out to the beach and look to the South between 2 and 4 a.m.  If the weather cooperates, you will see swift streaks of light flash through the sky.  Oh, and you had better take a blanket!  Brrrrrrrr...

October 21, 2004

Kiawah is a bit overcast this morning. No rain is in the current forecast, but it certainly is gray outside!  If the weather predictions are correct about the lack of rain, today should be a terrific day to be outside.

Did you attend the Chopin concert here on the island last night?  It was the first event sponsored by the newly formed Arts Council.  What a terrific start to what we all hope will be a long and flourishing series of arts events.

Did you know?  Tonight and tomorrow the Orionids meteor showers will be in town. They are relatively small showers, with 15 to 25 meteors per hour.  For best viewing, take a beach towel or a lawn chair out to the beach and look to the South between 2 and 4 a.m.  If the weather cooperates, you will see swift streaks of light flash through the sky.  Oh, and you had better take a blanket!  Brrrrrrrr...

October 20, 2004

Last night's showers seem to have passed, and it is a beautiful morning on Kiawah this morning. Only the slight puddles in the street and driveways indicate that we had any rain at all.  It looks like today will be another fabulous fall day!  The weather should be perfect for outside activities as it will be at least 80 degrees. How will you spend today?  On the beach?  On a bike?  Perhaps go for a walk?  Whatever you choose, enjoy!

Despite a prediction of showers throughout the day, Kiawah is lovely this morning. We currently have sunshine and a light breeze.

More fall colors make themselves known if you look around... purple beauty berries, yellow goldenrod, and white puffy salt myrtles at the edge of the marsh all announce that fall has arrived!

It is 72 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The high today should be in the low eighties with a 40% chance of rain. Tonight's low is supposed to be in the upper sixties.  There is a 70% chance of showers tonight.

October 18, 2004

Kiawah is delightful this morning. We have sunshine and scarcely any humidity at all.  Fall has arrived on our fair island.  Though Kiawah does not have the brilliant reds and yellows of South Carolina's mountains  or northern climes, we do have definite color changes in the fall.  The purple sweet grass, the gold and browns of the marsh, and the orange bittersweet berries.

Did you attend KICA's Fall Sunset Cruise yesterday evening?   Captain George guided participants through our waterways, pointing out  history and areas of interest. Hope you had fun at the "floating cocktail party"!

It is another fabulous morning on Kiawah. The sun is shining brightly, and it is cool with just a slight breeze.  It looks to be a perfect day to get outside and play!  Will you manage to enjoy the outdoors today?

Last night was the Kiawah Conservancy's Maritime Masquerade.  More than 300 people flocked to The Sanctuary to enjoy cocktails, dinner, and dancing.  There was also a silent auction, and all proceeds benefited the Conservancy. More than $15,000 was raised!

October 16, 2004

Brrrrr....Kiawah is certainly chilly this morning!  Despite the chill, it is another magnificent morning.  Dew is glistening on the leaves and grass, the birds are twittering noisily, and squirrels are playing tag up and down the oak trees.  What do you see outside your window this morning?

During this time of year our Kiawah critters are very active, especially at dusk and at night.  Remember, they are not on the lookout for us or for cars, so PLEASE drive carefully!

So this is the "slight chance of rain" that we were supposed to have after midnight last night? It has been raining since about 11 last night, and it doesn't look like it will stop anytime soon. Kiawah is a bit dreary and gray this morning, though breezy and cool.

October 14, 2004

A blast of cold air arrived last night on Kiawah, so we are cool and sunny this morning.  The humidity of yesterday is but a dream, as the cool front moves across Kiawah.  Doesn't it smell and feel terrific outside right now?

Though it is not Halloween yet, (so no vampires) there is "someone" on the island today who wants to suck your blood!  There is a blood drive at the Town Hall, so head on over & donate!

Are you a butterfly fan?  If so, now is a good time to make sure you have the best perennials ready to bloom this spring. If you want your butterfly garden to be alive with fluttering wings next year, dividing established perennials during autumn months is the easiest and quickest way to make them healthier. For more information on your butterfly garden, you can check the Butterfly Gardening Page

Did you know?

Butterflies taste with their feet!!! Via tiny receptors, a butterfly lands on a plant and tastes to see if it is the right kind of plant to lay its eggs on! What a relief that WE don't taste that way! J

It is 74 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The high today should be near eighty with a 20% chance of showers.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-sixties.   Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Loads of dragonflies in the dunes, three sea stars on the beach, three brown pelicans, a pair of blue jays, and two female white-tailed deer along Governor's Drive.

It is sunny and cool on Kiawah this morning.  Have you noticed the creeping edge of fall entering the island?  There is a hint of cooler weather to come in the air. And even the smells of the outdoors are different now than during the summer. ** Happy Columbus Day **

Kiawah's Columbus Day has started cool and overcast.  No parade here, though there are others nearby. Do you have the day off?

Did you go to the Taste of Charleston outing at Boone Hall Plantation yesterday? With 50 restaurants participating, it certainly sounded like a terrific way to spend a cloudy Sunday afternoon.

This coming Saturday is the Kiawah Island Natural Habitat Conservancy's Maritime Masquerade. It promises to be great fun for everyone. There will also be events on Sunday. Click here to see the scheduled events.

It is mostly cloudy on Kiawah this morning. After several showers yesterday, it appears that more of the same is in store.  Perhaps a good book is in order?

Have you noticed all the busy squirrels lately?  We seem to have a bumper crop of acorns this year, and the squirrels are industriously running to and fro, stashing acorns for cooler weather.

Kiawah is once again cool and breezy. While it is cloudy and a bit gray, it is not supposed to rain today.  So it should be a wonderful day to get outside and play!

Have you noticed the golden spiders at your house disappearing?  Every year they show up in the summer months while it is hot.  As Kiawah gets cooler, they seem to suddenly cease to exist. Only their huge webs remain, fluttering slowly in the wind. Until we get out the ladders and drag them down, that is!

FYI: The John's Island Library is scheduled to open October 26th. For more information on the library, click here.

October 2, 2004

October certainly started off things well here on Kiawah. Yesterday was a beautiful day, and today looks to be more of the same.  Were you able to get outside and soak up some sun yesterday?

Invasion of the butterflies... Every year we get a massive influx of Gulf Fritillary butterflies. Perhaps they are migrating or something, but for a couple of weeks every where you look you see pairs of them, trios, or even a waltzing quartet.  Yesterday near the Beach Club there were dozens and dozens of them flitting about on the dune flowers.  It was an extraordinary sight.  Have you seen them yet?

It is 73 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  The temperature today is supposed to be in the mid-eighties.  Tonight's low should be near seventy.  There is a 30% chance of showers both today and tonight.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Dozens and dozens of Gulf Fritillary butterflies, one great blue heron along Governor's Drive, one pileated woodpecker on Marsh Island Drive, one American alligator at Osprey Point golf course, eleven  brown pelicans, dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive, and one mama raccoon with four babies on Marsh Island.

** Happy October!**

Hard to believe that September is over, isn't it?  Where does the time go?  All of the sudden it is time to start thinking about fall, harvest time, and simmering stews.  But wait!  It is still eighty degrees on Kiawah!

It is another fabulous day on Kiawah - the birds are singing and the sun is shining!  Wouldn't it be nice to soak up a little sun today?

We had a few showers late yesterday, just small, brief ones.  This morning the ground is a bit wet, so apparently it rained a little last night too.
