November 30, 2004

Kiawah is mostly sunny this morning, and far warmer than the past few mornings.  This is a day that makes you realize what it is that you so love about Kiawah!  Could it be residual gratitude or appreciation from Thanksgiving?  It could be.  But then again, it could be that a gorgeous sunny day at the end of November is simply wonderful!  A day where you can wear shorts (!) outside while playing with your family and friends, can just make you glad to be alive.  Enjoy your day!

Don't forget: KICA is sponsoring a Candidate's Debate this evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Sandcastle.  In addition, the web site for the Kiawah Island Property Owners Group has posted statements from both mayoral candidates and all but one of the council candidates.  Click here to review them.

Did you know that you can adopt a family for the holidays?  Click here to read the details on the Town of Kiawah Island's web site.

It is 54 degrees at 9:30 this morning. We should see temperatures in the upper sixties today.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the upper fifties with a 20% chance of showers.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One raccoon still hanging out in the oak tree, one American alligator at the Osprey Point Club House (no, not IN the clubhouse, OUTSIDE!) eight double-crested cormorants in Egret Pond, two female white-tailed deer near the Kiawah Island Parkway and one male on Governor's Drive, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

November 29, 2004

It is bright and sunny on Kiawah this morning, but cold!  The sun is high in the sky, with no clouds to block the warm rays.  It will eventually be warm enough today to do without your sweater, though you will certainly need it this morning!

Did you know that you can adopt a family for the holidays?  Click here to read the details on the Town of Kiawah Island's web site.

It is 48 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The high today  should be in the mid-sixties, with tonight's low near fifty.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: FIFTEEN (not a typo!) bottle-nosed dolphins, mostly past Beachwalker Park, one very cold raccoon back in the oak tree, ten double-crested cormorants happily performing a water ballet in Egret Pond, two female white-tailed deer on Governor's Drive next to The Preserve, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

November 28, 2004

Kiawah is overcast today, though spots of sunshine occasionally break through the clouds.  There is a significant difference in the temperature, and fortunately it is warmer.  The last couple of days have been cold enough that staying inside beside a fire or with a good book seemed a really good idea!  The rain yesterday was just one more reason to huddle inside with friends and family to extend the Thanksgiving celebrations.

If you are headed back to Kiawah, here's hoping you have a safe and uneventful journey.

It is 52 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's temperature are supposed to be in the upper sixties.  The low tonight should be in the lower forties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One very cold raccoon still hanging out in an oak tree, four double-crested cormorants in the lagoon closest to Marsh Island Drive, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

November 27, 2004

The full moon (Full Beaver Moon) last night was stunning. It shone so brightly that everything seemed to be in a spotlight.  If you were outside last night you could easily find your way without benefit of a flashlight.

Once again we have awakened to brisk cool temperatures. Though it is sunny right now, the clouds are moving across the sky with purpose.  Rain is predicted so better get those errands finished early!

It is 45 degrees at 9:00 this morning. We should see temperatures in the lower sixties today and in the low fifties tonight. There is a 50% chance of showers both today and tonight.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One very cold raccoon still sleeping in an oak tree, one marsh hawk winging across the sky, eight double-crested cormorants in various lagoons, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

November 26, 2004

Wow is it cold outside!  Bet there are no open windows anywhere on Kiawah this morning! It is beautiful and sunny, but brrrrrr!  A raccoon is in the tree out front, curled up tightly and wedged into what is normally a hidey hole for baby raccoons.  So even the critters are huddled together to stay warm this morning!  It is a good morning to dive back under the covers and stay cozy.  Isn't there a good book you have been meaning to start reading?

Did you know? The Full Beaver Moon is at 3:07 pm today. This moon is so named because it was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter. It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon.

It is 46 degrees at 9:00 this morning. YIKES! The high today is supposed to be near sixty. Tonight's low should be in the mid-forties. ** PLANT WATCH **

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two great blue herons in the marsh before Glossy Ibis, one very cold raccoon in an oak tree, three double-crested cormorants on the lagoon at Marsh Island Drive, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

November 25, 2004

** Happy Thanksgiving! **

Last night's showers were accompanied by some serious winds which apparently blew the rains right past us.  So Kiawah is covered in sunshine this morning - yet another thing to be thankful for!

A THANKSGIVING POEM

'Twas the night of Thanksgiving,

But I just couldn't sleep

I tried counting backwards,

I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned -

The dark meat and white

But I fought the temptation

With all of my might.

Tossing and turning

With anticipation

The thought of a snack

Became infatuation.

So, I raced to the kitchen,

Flung open the door

And gazed at the fridge,

Full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey

And buttered potatoes,

Pickles and carrots,

Beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling

So plump and so round,

'Til all of a sudden,

I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling,

Floating into the sky

With a mouthful of pudding

And a handful of pie.

But, I managed to yell

As I soared past the trees....

Happy eating to all -

Pass the cranberries, please.

May your stuffing be tasty,

May your turkey be plump.

May your potatoes 'n gravy

Have nary a lump.

May your yams be delicious

May your pies take the prize,

May your Thanksgiving dinner

Stay off of your thighs.

May your Thanksgiving be blessed!

Thanksgiving week is typically a busy one on Kiawah, with lots of property owners here for the holiday. It seems every year there are more and more visitors here as well.  Perhaps Kiawah brings out the thankfulness in people?  The "Little Pig" will be running out of Thanksgiving staples soon... Need Cool Whip for your pumpkin pie? - better get over there quickly!

We have another overcast morning on Kiawah this morning. It rained most of the night, and there is still a light mist coming down.

The UBS Cup is over now.  There were four days of terrific coverage on the Golf Channel, and Kiawah was lauded to the skies for its hospitality, weather, beaches, accommodations...it would seem the UBS Cup participants think that Kiawah is paradise! Would you agree?

Kiawah is overcast again this morning. Rain did come through late last night and early this morning, but seems to have stopped for now.

Despite yesterday's early morning brief sprinkles, the UBS Cup had still more of Kiawah's wonderful weather.  Folks who have attended report the tournament to be great fun, with small crowds roaming the course.  Have you had a chance to take in the golf?

November 19, 2004

It is another fabulous November day on Kiawah! This morning it is bright and sunny, and a tad warmer than the past couple of days.  It will be a terrific day to get outside and play!

The UBS Cup Pro-Am yesterday was sparsely attended, despite the lovely weather.  But the serious tournament gets started today, so lots of folks are headed for, or already on the island.  Please watch out for traffic and drive carefully!

There is thrilling news for South Carolina birders today. Whooping cranes have been spotted in SC for the first since 1850!  They are most likely part of a migratory flock, not permanent residents.  But this is VERY exciting news!  If you happen to spot one, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service asks that you do NOT disturb them. Stay at least the distance of two football fields away and speak softly.

It is 57 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Today's temperature should be in the upper sixties. The low tonight is supposed to be in the upper fifties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two screech owls this time, still heard but not seen, three large bucks along Governor's Drive, six double-crested cormorants on Pintail Pond and two on Ibis Pond, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

November 18, 2004

Kiawah is bright and beautiful this morning.  The sun is shining and there are no clouds to be seen.  Looks like it is an auspicious day to begin the golf tournament! You can't go anywhere in the front half of the island without noticing all the purple signs that have popped up. The UBS Cup has taken over! The island is sure to be busy for the next several days as players and attendees descend upon us.

Did you know? Did you get a chance to view the Leonid meteor shower last night? If not, you have one more chance this evening. As always the meteors are best viewed in the "early morning hours" (translate that to 2:30 a.m.).  Leftover dust and ice from Comet Tempel-Tuttle create the meteors. So grab a lawn chair and a really warm blanket, face east to look for the constellation Leo, and start watching!

Yikes!  It is COLD out there this morning ladies and gentlemen!  Brrrrrrr!  Although it is a beautiful sunny day on Kiawah, it is certainly sweatshirt weather! Fortunately Kiawah abounds with places that are cool weather friendly. Hopefully you were among the 100-plus folks who managed to get out to Beachwalker Park yesterday to see the loggerhead release.  If not, check back soon to see photos of the event.

Right now Kiawah is bathed in sunlight and is warm and wonderful.

** ALERT * ALERT**

There is something today that is so fun and interesting that it has to be featured on our front page.  <drum roll please...>   A loggerhead turtle will be released from Beachwalker Park at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon.  This is a rare opportunity to see an adult loggerhead in action!  You will also be on hand to thank the South Carolina Aquarium staff who has worked so diligently to rehabilitate the turtle.  So grab an umbrella if necessary, but head over to Beachwalker this afternoon.  The gate will be open early and the star of the show should arrive around 12:30.

It is much warmer on Kiawah this morning, despite the overcast skies.  Showers are headed our way today and tonight, so better find your umbrella!

Did you attend KPOG's Meet the Candidates Night last night?  If so, you saw a pretty packed house at East Beach.  The event lasted approximately two hours, with each candidate weighing in on the issues.  Thanks to KPOG for sponsoring, and the League of Women Voters for facilitating the event.

Kiawah is starting to prepare for the upcoming UBS Cup.  There is a large billboard outside the entrance to Cassique that announces the event.  Will you be attending?

Speaking of groundsel, there is a new Feature Article on the Conservancy's web site.  Click here to see some lovely photos and to read the article.

Once again Kiawah has blessed us with a fabulous morning!  The sun is shining, a dazzling ball of bright light in a sky of azure blue.  The air is crisp and cool, Kiawah's version of fall weather is here! The photo above shows a few of Kiawah's exquisite fall colors.  While the island does not celebrate fall with the orange and browns of the northern climes, it does have a distinct fall palette.  The sweet grass and groundsel, goldenrod and marsh grass, all contribute their unique colors to the fall landscape.  What colors have you noticed on Kiawah this fall?

It is 54 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The high today is supposed to reach seventy.  Tonight's low should be in the mid-forties, so... ** PLANT WATCH **

Kiawah is bright and sunny this morning with not a cloud in the sky. It is pretty chilly in the mornings, with fabulous warm days and crisp cool nights.  Perfect for playing outside during the day and snuggling deep into the covers at night.

The Craft Show at the Sandcastle was very well attended yesterday.  There were booths for jewelry, pottery, purses, Christmas items, baby clothes, ceramics, whimsical lights, Creative Memories, photographs... you name it!  A grand time was had by all who attended.

Eagle News: Though the old eagle nest fell victim to hurricane winds, "our" eagles are alive and well!  We just don't have a prime viewing spot near the front gate any more.  Both eagles were spotted yesterday during a kayak trip down the Kiawah River.  The nest is nearly obscured by a thick canopy, but is visible if you look.  Isn't it nice to know all is well for the eagles?

It is 73 degrees at 8:45 this morning. The temperature should be in the low eighties today.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-sixties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One five-lined skink, three American alligators at the spillway near Flyway Drive, two great blue herons in The Preserve, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

November 1, 2004

Can you believe that November is here already?  It is officially the end of hurricane season, but we have had nothing resembling a hurricane since September.

There is quite a bit of fog on Kiawah this morning.  It drapes the beach so heavily that you cannot see more than 10 feet in front of you!
