Kiawah is overcast this morning, and very humid.  It appears that showers are on the way, so perhaps finding your umbrella is in order!

Don't forget: Today is the next installment of the  Oyster Restoration Project at Bass Creek! Join KICA and your neighbors as they work to build an oyster reef.  Be sure to get there by 11 a.m.

June 29, 2004

The sun is playing hide-and-go-seek on Kiawah this morning.  So overcast and humid is the story this morning.  The sun is valiantly trying to poke through the clouds, but it certainly looks like rain. In other words, it is a typical June day on Kiawah!

June 28, 2004

Kiawah is sunny and beautiful this morning.  The island is sporting puddles galore from the thundershowers we received last night. We were the recipient of some hard rain, though it seems to have drifted away for now.

Today is Carolina Day, the 228th anniversary of one of the first American victories in the Revolutionary War - the Battle of Fort Sullivan on June 28, 1776.

Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol has passed along their latest update: As of June 24th, there are 31 loggerhead nests on our beach.  The nesting numbers are still drastically lower than in any previous year.

It is 75 degrees at 9:00 this morning. We should see the mid-eighties today and mid-seventies tonight.  There is a 30% chance of rain during the day and 50% tonight.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count:  Two wood storks, numerous green herons, countless laughing gulls at fish kill on Egret Pond, one osprey, one American alligator, and one raccoon.

June 27, 2004

Kiawah is sunny and beautiful this morning, with far less humidity than in recent days.  Lots of folks were out and about enjoying the weather yesterday - the bike paths were burgeoning!  Perhaps you were out playing yesterday?  If not, why not head out today and grab some vitamin D, courtesy of Mr. Sun?

It is 75 degrees at 9:30 this morning. The temperature today is expected to be in the upper eighties once again. The low tonight is supposed to be in the mid-seventies.  There is a 50% chance of rain both today and tonight.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count:  Two live horseshoe crabs in the shallows, four red-winged blackbirds, one marsh hawk, two ospreys, two snowy egrets, five brown pelicans, two American alligators, and one raccoon.

June 26, 2004

Looks can be deceptive... Kiawah is beautiful this morning, with sunshine all around.  Yet there are storms in the area, and our forecast says we should be prepared for them. The humidity is hanging in the air, making it very muggy.  Still, it is a nice day to "go outside and play"!  So drag out your walking shoes, bike, or whatever, and go have some fun!  Hopefully you won't get wet...

It is 80 degrees at 8:30 this morning. Today's high is supposed to be in the upper eighties once again, with a 60% chance of rain. Tonight the low should be in the mid-seventies with a 40% chance of rain.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count:  One osprey, dozens of snowy egrets at Sea Marsh Drive, one anole, two green herons, eleven brown pelicans, two American alligators, and one raccoon.

June 25, 2004

It looks to be a lovely summer day on Kiawah today. The sky is a wonderful azure blue with fluffy white clouds drifting lazily past.  The oleanders are nearly spent, having just a few straggler blooms remaining.  The crepe myrtles are coming into flower though, with their bushels of white, purple, and pink blossoms.  Do you have a favorite summer flower?

More showers last night, complete with thunder and lightning.  At 9:00 a.m. it is 80 degrees and very humid.  The temperature today should be in the upper eighties a 30% chance of rain. The low tonight is supposed to be in the mid-seventies with a 50% chance of rain.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count:  One osprey, two broad-headed skinks, one green heron, three brown pelicans, four American alligators, and one raccoon.

June 24, 2004

Perhaps you have noticed that our community web site has changed a bit?  Welcome To Kiawah has been in existence for just over a year and a half, so why not a little pick-me-up?  You will still find all of your favorite items: the Critter Count, Meetings, Links, weather, tides, and so on.  In addition, there are two new features: Kiawah's Community and Kiawah's Natural World.  We hope you like the new look...

Our shower yesterday evening and though short, it was a doozie! High winds and lightning accompanied it, along with some heavy rain.  So Kiawah is cooler this morning, but very humid.  Today we should see temperatures around 90 with a 30% chance of rain. Tonight's low should be in the mid-seventies with a 20% chance of showers.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count:  Two green herons, one osprey, one pileated woodpecker, three American alligators, and one raccoon.

June 23, 2004

After a brief shower yesterday evening, Kiawah is much cooler and far less humid this morning.  Spanish moss is floating lazily from the oak trees in a gentle breeze, while the birds are chirping happily.  It is another wonderful day on the island!

Marilyn Blizard has her stint on nesting patrol right now, and she sent the above photo.  Marilyn also reports that her team located nest #28 yesterday.  We are still way behind normal numbers, but the entire state of South Carolina appears to be in the same boat.  What is up with the loggerheads this year?

June 21, 2004

Kiawah is on repeat today, humid and hot, with a 50/50 chance of showers. It seems that most of you are ignoring the potential of summer showers though, as there were lots of folks out and about yesterday, enjoying the outdoors.

Yesterday was a big day on Marsh Island Drive for the resident baby raccoons.  Mama is teaching them how to climb!  Did you know that baby raccoons make a little squeaking noise?  Well they most certainly do!  Especially if they are further away from mama than they feel they should be!  Climbing is a scary proposition, and being all alone of a small branch is enough to make even the bravest of baby raccoons call for mom!

Still looking for the wildflowers shown above?  The final hint is... behind the Vanderhorst gate, and don't stay on the ground... fly away!  Can you find it?  Stay tuned, tomorrow all will be revealed!

A 50% chance of rain is predicted for today, so it will be interesting to see who wins - the clouds or the sun!  Though it did not last long, yesterday's rain was very welcome, continuing just long enough to bring slightly cooler temperatures.

June 3, 2004

No doubt island visitors will be less than thrilled with this, but there is a fairly heavy rain on Kiawah right now.  At the risk of upsetting the tourists... YIPPEE!  We can certainly use the rain.  The 30% chance of showers predicted goes through this evening, so perhaps we will get a bit of accumulation.

Kiawah's special gift yesterday was the sighting of a pair of pileated woodpeckers. Yes, not just one, amazing enough in its own right, but TWO!  Wouldn't it be wonderful if this were a breeding pair?  Seeing baby pileated woodpeckers fledge would be a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Kiawah is wrapped in its coat of many colors - coral beans, the last blooms of magnolias, mimosas, gardenias, lantanas and more.  The Kiawah Island Natural Habitat Conservancy has loads of information on native plants, and currently is featuring an article about coral beans.  Click here to read it.

Tonight actually the Full Strawberry Moon.  Europeans call it the Rose Moon.  Since the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries comes each year during the month of June... the full Moon that occurs during that month was christened for the strawberry!

June 2, 2004

It is a lazy hazy June day on Kiawah. Still no showers, despite the nearly constant "20% chance".  After a while it is easy to ignore that, is it not? J So it looks like today will be another perfect day to get outside and play!

Kiawah is still wrapped in its coat of many colors - coral beans, the last blooms of magnolias, mimosas, gardenias, lantanas and more.  The Kiawah Island Natural Habitat Conservancy has loads of information on native plants, and currently is featuring an article about coral beans.  Click here to read it.

Tonight is the Full Strawberry Moon - This name was universal to every Algonquin tribe. However, in Europe they called it the Rose Moon. Also because the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries comes each year during the month of June . . . so the full Moon that occurs during that month was christened for the strawberry!

June 1, 2004

It is just a bit overcast this morning on Kiawah. The sun is playing hide and seek with the clouds - just now the clouds seem to be winning! Oddly enough, our chance of showers has disappeared according to the weather service.  We could certainly use some rain though.  Just look outside at any water source and the birds and critters splashing about will remind you of that!

Turtle News: Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol passes along this update:  as of May 31st we have ten nests on Kiawah's beach!  SCDNR reports that roughly two weeks ago there was a very large number of loggerheads that washed ashore along the Georgia coast.  Between 70 and 80 turtles were found dead.  This is very sad information for turtle lovers everywhere!  Click here to visit The Turtle Nest for more information.
