July 31, 2004

Kiawah is sunny and lovely this morning, and not too humid. It looks to be a terrific day to get outside and play!

Last night the moon looked full already.  As you drove down River Road, the moon was so large that it would swallow up a car in its glow.

Did you know? Tonight is the Full Sturgeon Moon... The fishing tribes are given credit for name, since sturgeon were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Tonight's moon is also a blue moon! The blue moon is often said to be the second full moon in a calendar month, though its original meaning was the third full moon in a season when there were four full moons in that season. Blue moons don't happen very often! The next one is not until June 30, 2007.

It is 79 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Today's high is supposed to be in the upper eighties The low tonight should be in the mid-seventies.   There is a 40% chance of showers today and tonight.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One praying mantis, one male ruby-throated hummingbird, four black vultures, several golden silk spiders, six brown pelicans, one male white-tailed deer, and one mama raccoon with four babies.

July 30, 2004

Kiawah is once again sunny and beautiful this morning.  We received a wee bit of rain last night and very early this morning, but not enough to even create any puddles of note.   It certainly appears that the rain is done and has left us a little sunshine in its wake.

Joe Zambito sent in this photo of "Bambi's Dad"   Doesn't he look a bit surprised to have been spotted by Joe?

Today the moon is at its perigee, the point in its orbit closest to Earth. Do the math! Lunar perigee plus Blue Moon equals very high tides in the Lowcountry. Watch your undercarriage!

It is 81 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The high should reach the upper eighties today and the low is supposed to be in the mid-seventies tonight. There is a 20% chance of showers today and this evening.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two male cardinals, several golden silk spiders busily rebuilding their webs after the rains, one red-bellied woodpecker, one blue jay, two female and one male white-tailed deer, and one mama raccoon with four babies.

July 29, 2004

So much for going out last night to see the Delta Aquarids meteor showers... Kiawah was the recipient of some fairly hard rain yesterday evening and last night, so no star gazing was possible for most of the night. It is overcast now and we have a light rain.  Looks like a good day to stay inside and read a good book.  What are you reading these days?

Did you know? The Delta Aquarids meteor showers will strut their stuff again tonight. Slow, long paths, of 15 to 25 meteors per hour should make them easy to spot.  The best time to watch is to the south between 1:00 and 3:00 am.  Find a place with a clear view of the sky and arrange for deck chairs or a blanket.  Happy stargazing!

Kiawah is overcast and humid this morning. The sun is valiantly peeking out between the clouds though, and seems determined to win the day. Do you think if we all head outside to play we could convince the sun to stick around? J

It is 83 degrees at 9:00 this morning. A slight (very slight) change in the forecast for today... it should be in the UPPER eighties today and the mid-seventies tonight. There is a 40% chance of showers today and tonight.

July 27, 2004

This morning it is warm and humid on Kiawah. Though we have had only a few 100 degree days, the summer of 2004 has certainly turned out to be a scorcher!

Did you know?

Kiawah is home to many species of snakes.  You can find them in all parts of the island: the dunes, the maritime forest, the ponds, the marsh, and swampy areas. About half of South Carolina's 30 species of snakes can be found on Kiawah.  The Town of Kiawah Island has a very informative brochure describing some of Kiawah's snakes.  It is free, and is available at the Visitor's Center at the Town Hall.

Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports that another loggerhead nest has hatched!  Nest #2 hatched on July 25th.  That makes three hatches so far...

It is 82 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Another "broken record day" with the mid-eighties today and the mid-seventies tonight. Once again there is a 30% chance of showers today and tonight.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two five-lined skinks, two female white-tailed deer, and one mama raccoon with four babies.    Heard but not seen, one barred owl and one chuck wills widow...

July 26, 2004

Kiawah is certainly in the midst of the summer doldrums - hot and sticky, with nary a breeze to spare.  The poem below was published in the Post & Courier this morning, and seemed quite appropriate!  Hope you enjoy it.

House Blessing

Bless this house, oh Lord, we cry.

Please keep it cool in late July.

Bless the walls where termites dine.

While ants and roaches march in time.

Bless our yard where spiders pass

Fire ant castles in the grass.

Bless the garage, a home to please

Carpenter beetles, ticks and fleas.

Bless the love bugs, two by two,

Gnats and mosquitoes that feed on you.

Millions of creatures that fly or crawl,

South Carolina, Lord, has them all.

But this is home and here we'll stay,

So thank you, Lord, for insect spray!

It is 75 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Once again we will be in the mid-eighties today and the mid-seventies tonight. We have a 30% chance of showers both today and tonight.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One male and one female painted bunting, one ruby-throated hummingbird, two wood ibis, one five-lined skink, two male cardinals, one blue jay, and one mama raccoon with three babies.

July 25, 2004

Kiawah is very overcast this morning. Looks like more rain is on the way...  We received some very hard rain yesterday and had some dense fog this morning.  Any newly arrived visitors must be wondering if they took a wrong turn on the interstate and ended up in rainy Seattle!

The island is still extremely busy, despite the proximity of school starting.  The line at the front gate yesterday evening at six o'clock nearly reached Mingo Point!  And let's not discuss trying to shop at the Piggly Wiggly on Saturdays. J

It is 76 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Our weather is a broken record again... today will be in the mid-eighties and tonight the mid-seventies. We have a 30% chance of showers both today and tonight.

July 24, 2004

Guess what we have this morning?  More humidity!  Isn't that a big surprise? J The high humidity this morning is enough to indicate the possibility of the rain the weather channel speaks of.  It certainly is July in South Carolina!

Bob Struble submitted today's photo. You may have noticed that Bob has sent several in the past.  Do you think that a) he is a really talented photographer, b) he has a fabulous camera, c) Kiawah lends itself to wonderful pictures, or d) all of the above?  The correct answer is D!  Thanks for sharing Bob!

Whew!  Can you say H-U-M-I-D-I-T-Y?  It is sticky and steamy on our little island this morning. You can see windows fogged up as you walk down the street.  Our air conditioners will be working overtime!

Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports that loggerhead hatching season has finally begun! Nest #4 hatched on July 21st.  This nest is the only hatch of the 53 nests laid to date.

Kiawah is already pretty warm this morning... in other words, a typical July day on our island!  We are fast approaching the end of July though.  Isn't it hard to believe that we are a mere week away from August already?

July 21, 2004

It is sunny and bright on Kiawah this morning, but very humid. Late yesterday afternoon it rained hard for about an hour.  That seems to have been just enough to make our little island very sticky this morning.

Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports that as of July 19th, there are 53 loggerhead nests on our beach.  No nests have hatched yet.  This certainly looks to be an extremely difficult season.

July 20, 2004

Kiawah is perfectly lovely this morning!  Though we did not receive any of the showers portended by the ominous thunder and lightning last night, they do seem to have pushed slightly cooler temperatures to us - at least for the morning.

Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports that as of July 19th, there are 53 loggerhead nests on our beach.  No nests have hatched yet.  This certainly looks to be an extremely difficult season.

July 19, 2004

It is mostly sunny on Kiawah this morning, but clouds cover most of the sky. While we really needed the rain, let's hope that we have a respite today to get outside and play!

The island was pummeled by thundershowers yesterday.  It started out as a gentle but steady rain, then quickly progressed to a hard, driving rain.  Everything was drenched pretty rapidly.  The rain seemed to be crashing almost sideways at times.  The wind was not to be left out, doubling over some trees and strewing palm fronds and Spanish moss everywhere.

It is 79 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today is supposed to be in the mid-eighties, with tonight in the mid-seventies.  There is a 20% chance of rain today.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One osprey, one female white-tailed deer on Marsh Island Drive, one American alligators, and one raccoon.  Not much else due to the rain!

July 18, 2004

Kiawah is very overcast this morning - not much sunshine peeking through the clouds today!  Though it may sound like we are going out on a limb, it looks as if today will finally give us the rain that has been predicted for the past three days.  Yesterday's 70% chance never really got anywhere near Kiawah - just a strong breeze here and there, and a few drops of rain.

It is 79 degrees at 9:15 this morning. We should see temperatures in the mid-eighties today, and the mid-seventies tonight.  There is a 40% chance of rain today and 20% tonight.

July 17, 2004

Kiawah is overcast this morning with small specks of sun beams here and there. It would certainly appear that the weather service is correct in their predictions of rain for today!

The island is still packed with vacationers, but soon they will be but a memory.  School begins in 4 weeks (already?) and the vacationers will be headed home soon to prepare.  Doesn't it seem that they barely arrived and Memorial Day was just here? Summer certainly moves quickly here in the Lowcountry.

Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports that as of July 14th, there are 48 loggerhead nests on our beach.  This is the lowest number for this time of year since the patrol started keeping records over 25 years ago.

It is 79 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today is supposed to be in the mid-eighties, with tonight in the low seventies.  There is a 70% chance of rain both today and this evening.

July 16, 2004

The sun is shining brightly on Kiawah this morning. Tomorrow the weather service is predicting a 60% chance of thunder showers, so better get outside and play today, just in case!

July 15, 2004

Kiawah is mostly sunny this morning. Still no rain to speak of, though the weather service suggests some may be headed our way this week-end.

Yesterday was certainly a scorcher!  Several folks report seeing 101 on their thermometers. Yikes!  At just under 90, today should feel substantially cooler.  Or at least we hope so!

It is 79 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The high today is expected to be in the upper eighties, and tonight should be in the mid- seventies.  We have a 30% chance of showers both today and tonight.

July 14, 2004

We are already at 82% humidity on Kiawah this morning! Despite quite a bit of particularly ominous-sounding rumbles last night, we received no rain to alleviate the heat and humidity. The weather service expects a heat index near 110. Please be careful out there today!

Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports that as of July 10th, there are 45 loggerhead nests on our beach. All the beaches up and down the Eastern coast are reporting the same situation - extremely low nest counts.  We keep hoping that those mamas will swamp us in the coming weeks, but it doesn't look good.

It is 82 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Today's high should reach the mid-nineties, with tonight in the mid-seventies.  We have a 30% chance of showers tonight.

Kiawah is sunny and beautiful this morning, and seems to have a bit less humidity than recent days.  And have you noticed the crepe myrtle trees? They are doing their best to decorate the island with their stunning blossoms - red, white, purple, and pink, they provide splashes of color as you make your way around the island.

July 12, 2004

It is a lovely morning on Kiawah!  And it would seem that even our Kiawah critters think so... Has anyone else noticed that the "Squirrel Olympics" are in town?  Every day squirrels are playing "Corkscrew Chase" up and down the trees, racing across yards, and "flying" from palm frond to palm frond.  They certainly seem to be holding their own track & field events!  And just in time for the Olympic trials too...

** Island News: KICA's Land Management Department will be removing a tree on the Kiawah Island Parkway between the first overpass and Sea Marsh/Surfwatch on Tuesday, July 13, 2004. The removal process will begin at 7:05am. Both lanes of traffic will be blocked until the tree is down. Please expect a 10-15 minute delay. KICA is sensitive to the fact that people leave the island for work around that time. KICA will do everything possible to keep the delay minimal.

It is 81 degrees at 9:00 this morning. It seems cooler and a bit less humid on Kiawah this morning.  Today we should see the upper eighties, and tonight the mid-seventies.  We have a 30% chance of showers, both today and tonight.

July 11, 2004

Kiawah is sunny and beautiful this morning!   If we can stay away from the rain, today should be a terrific day to "get outside and play"!  On that note, Kiawah has several areas set aside with nature trails, some with ponds, some with observation towers, and some with boardwalks.  One of these is the Sparrow Pond Nature Trail.  It is located near Sparrow Pond and Duneside Cottages.  As you walk or bicycle the paths, you will see a natural pond and vegetated island.  Native plants and animals are there for your viewing pleasure as well!  Have you ever visited Sparrow Pond Nature Trail?

It is 82 degrees at 9:15 this morning. The humidity is not as thick as it has been this past week, probably due to the showers Kiawah received late yesterday afternoon.  The temperature today is supposed to be in the upper eighties.  Tonight's low should be in the upper seventies.  We do have a 40% chance of showers, mostly this afternoon.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One green heron on Virginia Rail, one golden silk spider, two great blue herons, four red-winged blackbirds, seven American alligators, and one raccoon.

July 10, 2004

Kiawah is wrapped in sunshine this morning.  No clouds in the sky, just a brilliant cornflower blue.  Lots of folks have been enjoying the outdoors despite our current heat wave.  The Wassons, vacationing from Charlotte, NC,  even sent us a photo to prove it!  They built giant sea turtle on the beach yesterday.  Thanks for sharing your efforts y'all!

It is 81 degrees at 9:15, with 80% humidity...AGAIN!  The temperature is expected to reach the upper eighties, with tonight being in the upper seventies.  The weather service expects a heat index near 105. The best quote seen all week is attributed to Meteorologist Hal Austin... "It's July. It's South Carolina. It's hot and humid. Armor-piercing humidity."  Armor-piercing indeed!

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One loggerhead turtle (see the photo above!), three green herons on Virginia Rail, two golden silk spiders, one great blue heron, seven red-winged blackbirds, two American alligators, and one raccoon.

July 9, 2004

Kiawah is in full "July mode" this morning. Hot and humid, with possible showers on the way. Most of Kiawah's critters find that staying out of the sun helps them keep cool, though the golden silk spiders don't seem to mind the heat!  The lie in wait in their webs, hoping for a stray bug or dragonfly to happen upon their web.

Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol reports that as of July 4th, there are 37 loggerhead nests on our beach.  This is the lowest nesting number recorded since turtle patrol began keeping records more than 26 years ago.  It certainly appears that this will be the worst loggerhead nesting year yet.  Unfortunately, this phenomenon is not limited to our beach.  The same is true up and down the coast, from Florida to North Carolina.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One red-tailed hawk, one great blue heron, three red-winged blackbirds, one diamondback terrapin, two American alligators, and one raccoon and two baby raccoons.

Whew!  It is wringing wet with humidity on Kiawah this morning.  Ick!  It looks like today will be a day for trying to stay cool - a trip to the pool anyone?

Hopefully you were able to enjoy some of Kiawah's Fourth of July activities yesterday.  As usual, the parade was terrific!  The festival at Night Heron Park and the party at the Sandcastle pool were both stellar as well.  Click here to see photos of some of the events.

*** Happy Fourth of July! ***

Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!

The sunshine is out in force on Kiawah this morning, as is the heat and humidity. But what else can you expect for the Fourth of July?  The heat just gives you the proper excuse to partake of watermelon and ice cream and other cooling treats.  So splurge and enjoy!

It is 75 degrees at 8:30 this morning. Once again the temperature is supposed to be in the upper eighties. Tonight's low should be in the upper seventies.  There is a 30% chance of rain today and tonight.

Kiawah is overcast again this morning, though it is not raining at present. Not too many people saw the Full Buck Moon last night because of all of the rain! We have a fairly good chance of seeing more rain today as well.  Keep your fingers crossed that Mother Nature gets it all out of her system before the fireworks tomorrow night!

It is 73 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Today we should see the upper eighties again, with a 40% chance of rain..  The low tonight should be in the mid-seventies with a 40% chance of rain.

July 2, 2004

We awoke to an overcast morning due to more rain on Kiawah last night...  It looks like more is in store for us today too.  So what will you do today to stay out of the rain?

Did you know? Tonight is the Full Buck Moon. The moon is so named because July is the month when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, because thunderstorms are most frequent during this time.

It is 75 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The high today is expected to reach the upper eighties.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-seventies.  There is a 60% chance of rain showers today and 50% tonight.

July 1, 2004

Kiawah was the recipient of some major thunder storms last night.  The flashes of lightning and cracks of thunder were enough to rouse you from the deepest slumber!  It is still sprinkling off and on this morning, though the "noise" has ceased.  Looks like it may be an indoor day?  Curling up with a good book or a movie may be in order!

It is 75 degrees at 8:45 this morning. Today's high should be in the mid-eighties.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the lower seventies.  There is a 60% chance of rain showers both today and tonight.
