January 31, 2004 Yesterday's warmer weather and sunshine did not carry over to today unfortunately. Kiawah is gray and very overcast this morning. Still, it is the week-end! And whether it seems apparent currently or not, we are slowly, inexorably headed towards spring! The daylight today will hang around for 10 hours and 36 minutes, but tomorrow will be one minute and 36 seconds longer. More and more daylight is a very good thing! Did you know? Today is Inspire Your Heart With Art Day! Maybe you would like to head down to the Gibbes Museum of Art and be inspired? Or perhaps you will make some art of your own? Some fun things to do today:
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, four snowy egrets near Marsh Island Drive, two great blue herons, three "hoodies" (hooded mergansers) two great blue herons, four double-crested cormorants, ten pelicans, and three raccoons. It is 39 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. Today's high temperature is supposed to be in the lower fifties. The low tonight should drop into the low to mid-thirties. ** Plant Watch! **
January 30, 2004 It is just a wee bit warmer on Kiawah this morning. It is gray and cloudy, but noticeably warmer. Let us hope this weather is a harbinger for a nicer week-end! The sunset last night on Kiawah was amazing - there were plum-colored clouds at the edge of the horizon, with a variety of pinks and pale oranges fanning out on top of them. Kiawah is fortunate to have some of the most wonderful sunrises and sunsets...have you treated yourself to one lately? Did you know? On this date in history:
Some fun things to do today:
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, six snowy egrets gathering in the pines on Blue Heron Pond, two great blue herons, three double-crested cormorants, and two "deck raccoons". January 29, 2004 Kiawah has awakened to another cold morning. There is once again ice in the bird baths, and frost on the windows. Our northern cousins are no doubt wishing they were here rather than in the midst of their snow, but some folks on Kiawah are wishing they were in the Caribbean somewhere! Did you know? Today is Freethinkers Day! It is celebrated each year on the anniversary of the birth of Thomas Paine, a leader of the American Revolution and author of Common Sense. Some fun things to do today:
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, three great blue herons, seven double-crested cormorants, and two"deck raccoons". Have you seen any critters? E-mail the webmaster and include yours! It is 33 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. Today's temperature is supposed to be in the upper fifties. The low tonight should be in the upper thirties.
January 28, 2004 OK! Enough already! Wasn't Mother Nature supposed to cooperate and send us a wee bit of warm weather this week? But noooo... we get freezing temperatures instead. The bird bath is frozen over this morning! Now that is cold! Kiawah is a far cry from a tropical paradise this morning. But at least it is sunny for the first time this week. Something fun to do today: Need a little fun in the midst of all this cold weather?
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One great blue heron, five flying pelicans and two raccoons. Kiawah's critters are apparently spending time huddled together to stay warm! Have you seen any critters? E-mail the webmaster and include yours! It is 32 degrees at 8:45 a.m. this morning. The high temperature today should reach the low fifties. Tonight's low is supposed to drop into the low thirties. ** Plant Watch! **
January 27, 2004 Winter is certainly hanging out on Kiawah these days. This morning is gray and drizzly. It is not supposed to warm up much either! Sometime today you might want to haul out your plastic or sheets to cover your plants, as tonight should be below freezing. Is it too early to yearn for spring? Today's photo was taken by Ron Pollitt of Dungannon Hall. Ron saw this bobcat in his backyard - he has named the photo "Lookin' For Love". Did you know? On today's date in 1756, composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born. Something fun to do today: When it is dreary outside, sometimes you need to shake things up a bit! Why not try one of the things below?
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Four great blue herons, three pelicans and two raccoons. The rest of Kiawah's critters must have been in hiding trying to stay warm! It is 34 degrees at 8:45 a.m. this morning. Today's temperature is supposed to be in the mid-forties once again. The low tonight should drop to the upper twenties. Better cover your plants!
January 26, 2004 What happened to the warmer weather? It appears that Saturday was just a brief respite from winter, as Kiawah once again awakened to a gray cool morning. We are far better off than our inland neighbors however. There is a winter weather advisory inland until noon, with the possibility of freezing rain. Yikes! We have escaped rain thus far, but could receive some this afternoon. Let's hope it is not the freezing variety! Something fun to do today: Maybe you might want to do something a little different today?

January 25, 2004 Our luck has turned a bit on Kiawah today. It is a cool, drizzly day. After yesterday's warmer sunny weather, this morning is quite a shock! Hopefully you were able to get outside and play yesterday, because today is a good day to stay inside and stay warm! Something fun to do today: Here are a few things to do on this rainy day!
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two bobcats on Marsh Island Drive, two bald eagles, six (hooded mergansers) five great blue herons, what looked to be forty or so double-crested cormorants, ten pelicans, and three "deck raccoons".

January 24, 2004 Once again we have a lovely sunny day here on Kiawah. The high temperature will reach the low sixties today, (six? SIX? Yes, sixties!) so if you missed getting outside yesterday, you have another chance. What a nice day for January! J An eagle update: For the past few weeks, one or both of the bald eagles near the front gate have been spotted perched on the edge of the nest, leaning into it. It would appear that they are feeding a little one each time! If so, it should be only a few weeks before the eaglet will be spotted at the edge of the nest limbering up its wings. Something fun to do today: The Lowcountry Environmental Education Program puts on its third annual oyster roast. There will be a live band and a silent auction. The events lasts from 1:00 to 7:00 pm. at the Maritime Center. The cost is $10. Call 478-6162 for more information.

January 23, 2004 It is yet another beautiful sunny day on the island. However, it is a mere 39 degrees at 8:45 a.m. this morning! And although the temperature will reach the low fifties, winter certainly seems to have settled in for the long haul. An eagle update: For the past few weeks, one or both of the bald eagles near the front gate have been spotted perched on the edge of the nest, leaning into it. It would appear that they are feeding a little one each time! If so, it should be only a few weeks before the eaglet will be spotted at the edge of the nest limbering up its wings. According to Chinese tradition, it is 4701, the Year of the Monkey. Did you go outside at all last night? With the new moon, it was inky black outside. We just have a tiny bit of frost on the windows this morning. No snow here on the island! J Yesterday was breezy but beautiful; the surf was crashing, and the branches on the trees were waving in the wind. Lots of people took advantage of the sunshine to get out and about on the island. Something fun to do today: In the spirit of Bald Eagle Appreciation Day, why not head down to Kiawah's front gate and check out our resident bald eagles? We know for certain that there was at least one egg laid, and judging by the recent actions of the adult eagles, it would seem that we now have a baby bald eagle being fed! 1/16/04, 12:00 p.m. Breaking News... January 3, 2004 Once again Mother Nature has blessed Kiawah with a wonderful sunny morning. It certainly would appear that we have a fabulous week-end ahead of us! This probably makes some folks a bit sad. After two solid weeks of a "packed" island for the holidays, many folks are headed back home. At least they are getting a nice send off before heading back! Did you know? The Town of Kiawah Island will soon be offering recycling cart wheel kits. After January 20, 2004, you can pick up a kit for $15. No more back problems from hauling your recycling cart to curbside! You can contact Rusty at the Town Hall at 768-9166 for more information. Isn't this why we all love living in South Carolina? Who says it is winter? Joe Zambito has passed along a photo of Kiawah's beach on the first day of 2004. Although there are none in the photo, loads of people were out and about enjoying the lovely weather. Did you know?

Here's hoping that you are feeling well enough to appreciate the terrific weather - and are not *too* hung over from celebrating out on the town last night!
