December 31, 2003

Kiawah is experiencing a sunny morning for New Year's Eve day.  It will be a bit cooler today than yesterday, but still plenty warm to be able to get outside for a while.  Lots of folks took advantage of yesterday's warm weather, biking, running, and walking around the island.  Did you get outside to play?

If you are celebrating the coming of the new year by going out on the town, please drive safely.

Something fun to do today: The tall ship Unicorn will dock in Charleston this afternoon.  It is a 118-foot Canadian ship, now serving time on the high seas as an executive sail training ship and part-time luxury charter.  Unicorn recently underwent a $600,000 renovation.  It is a gaff-rigged schooner with square topsails.  Weather permitting, the ship should arrive at the Charleston Maritime Center, at 10 Wharfside St. around 1:00 p.m.  It will be docked here through Friday and then proceed south to Jacksonville, Florida.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, seven snowy egrets,  four double-crested cormorants, one alligator sunning itself on a lagoon bank, and two raccoons.

It is 38 degrees at 8:45 a.m. this morning.  The temperature today should reach the mid-sixties. Tonight's low temperature should be in the low forties.

December 30, 2003

Kiawah is once again overcast this morning.  It is supposed to be mostly cloudy today, with a 20% chance of showers this morning. But if the rain stays away, this may be one of the nicest days we have experienced in a while!  With a high near seventy degrees, perhaps you would enjoy a walk on the beach?

Something fun to do today: Feel like a little road trip? The Sewee Visitor Center in the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge in Awendaw (on Highway 17) offers a pair of environmentally friendly children's films today at 2 p.m. Popcorn and lemonade are served.  Add this to over 64,000 acres that include Bull's Bay and exhibits such as red wolves, and you have an enjoyable afternoon! Now doesn't that sound like fun?

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, four snowy egrets,  one tiny "garage anole", two double-crested cormorants, and three raccoons.

It is 63 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning.  Today's temperature is supposed to be in the high sixties. The temperature tonight is supposed to be in the high thirties.

December 29, 2003

Our sunshine has temporarily disappeared!  Kiawah is overcast this morning.  It should clear up by this afternoon, although there is a 20% chance of showers this evening.  Still, it will be warm enough to enjoy some "outdoor time", so that is something to celebrate!

Something fun to do tonight: If you are an astronomy buff, you might want to check out a moon dance! With apologies to Van Morrison... "Well, it's a marvelous night for a Moondance, with the stars up above in your eyes."

Seriously though, the dazzling star hanging out with the moon lately is Mars.  Just before dawn, at 5:03 a.m. tonight, the moon and Mars will appear to cross paths and switch places in a little moondance just for you.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two bald eagles, one great blue heron, seven snowy egrets, four brown pelicans cruising Egret Pond, four double-crested cormorants, and three hungry raccoons.

December 28, 2003

Kiawah is once again sunny and beautiful.  Most of the frost has disappeared, but if you look closely, especially in some shady spots, you can still see remnants of last night's cooler temperatures.  Cougar Point Golf Course had frost scattered across the fairways like leopard spots.  Wherever the sun has not penetrated the leaves on the trees, the shade created on the grass is filled with frost.

It will be warmer today than it has been the past week or so, so be sure to get outside and enjoy it!

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two bald eagles, three great blue herons, seven snowy egrets, two brown pelicans, one white pelican, four double-crested cormorants, and three hungry raccoons.

December 27, 2003

This morning it is sunny and beautiful on Kiawah.  It looks deceptively warm outside...but don't be fooled!  At least for this morning you will need some warm layers to keep warm!  Mother Nature is sending some warmer weather for this afternoon though.  We should all be able to get outside and play in the sunshine.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two bald eagles, six (!) great blue herons, five snowy egrets, fourteen double-crested cormorants, and three hungry raccoons.

It is 30 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning.  The temperature should be in the lower sixties today. The low tonight should be in the upper thirties.

** Happy Kwanzaa! **

** Happy Boxing Day! **

Kwanzaa is a 7 day festival celebrating the African American people, their culture and their history. It is a time of celebration, community gathering, and reflection. A time of endings and beginnings.

Today is also the second day of Christmas, the last night of Hanukkah, and in the Bahamas, it is Junkanoo!

Junkanoo is a 300 year-old festival , and is like Mardi Gras with African tribal rituals. It is a HUGE party, full of music, art and fierce costume competition.

So why not select your favorite holiday, grab your family and friends, and celebrate anew?  Have a great day everyone...

Yesterday's rain never really made itself known on Kiawah. It did sprinkle just a bit last night, but nothing major. This morning it is gray and overcast again.  It would appear that the rain is a little behind schedule and is just now arriving.  Probably had to finish up some holiday shopping like the rest of us...

Tonight is the night that children all over the world may actually go to bed without much prompting, waiting for Santa Claus to stop by.  But did you know that children are not the only ones anxious to see Santa?  The North American Air Defense Command tracks Santa's progress across the globe as he delivers his toys.  Don't believe it?  Click here to track Santa for yourself!

December 23, 2003

Looks like rain is on the way for us today.  This morning it is gray and overcast.  The sun looks to be valiantly attempting to break through the clouds, but for now, it is merely a bright spot behind them. If you have last minute shopping to do, you had better get to the stores, else you will be dragging along an umbrella along with all the rest of your packages! J

December 22, 2003

Are your plants droopy this morning from last night's frost?  This was a tough week-end for plants and people alike.  Tonight it will be slightly warmer, so hopefully that will provide a brief respite.

This morning dawned as another beautiful "sunshiny" day on Kiawah!  It is cool this morning, but should reach the upper 60's today.  Bet there are lots of folks out and about today, enjoying this wonderful weather.

How did you plants endure the freeze last night?  Keep those covers close at hand, because tonight will be near freezing as well. This morning it is still fairly cold but sunny on Kiawah. Definitely not the type of weather that makes you want to go frolic on the beach!  Unless you happen to be a sea gull or pelican that is.

Did you know? Tonight is the winter solstice. The winter solstice occurs when because of the earth's tilt, we are furthest from the sun, so the hours of daylight are the shortest, and the sun has its lowest arc in the sky.  But what it also means is that after today, each day will bring us just a wee bit more daylight.

Once again Kiawah has awakened to a sparkling, sunny morning.  Looking outside it would seem to be a typical warm tropical day...NOT!  We are certainly in the midst of winter now, no doubt about that.  Is it too early to start thinking spring?

Did you know: Hanukkah begins at sundown today.  Happy Hanukkah everyone!  Hanukkah is The Festival of Lights.  It celebrates the victory of the Maccabees and the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. It also commemorates the miracle of the oil that burned for 8 days.  If you would like to learn more, click here.

December 16, 2003

Kiawah is rather chilly, and there is a little bit of frost on the windows this morning.  Last night saw patchy fog on the Parkway and on Main Road. Every once in a while eyes peeped out from the darkness and fog, and the next thing you know, a raccoon or opossum would scurry hurriedly across the road.

The photo above shows Kiawahian Carol Ann Smalley at the piano during the recent POPS Christmas party on December 6th.  Do you see anyone else that you know?

Something fun to do today: This evening and tomorrow evening is the "Night of a Thousand Candles" at Brookgreen Gardens.  Thousands of lights will illuminate the garden path and trees.  Musicians and carolers, and a one-man adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" will be part of the entertainment.  The event begins at 4:30 p.m. and goes until 9:00 p.m.  Call (800) 849-1931 for more information.

It would appear that our heat wave has disappeared along with the showers.  Last night was an intense storm, with slashing rain and wicked howling wind.  The wind was still gusting strongly earlier this morning too - no doubt your yard is littered with palm fronds and leaves.  But this morning it is once again chilly on Kiawah. L

Something fun to do today: If you have not see it before (or maybe even if you have!) why not sneak down to the IMAX Theater and see the 3D movie, Santa vs. the Snowman?  Click the IMAX Theater link above, or call (843) 725-4629 for show times.

December 9, 2003

We have another chilly day on Kiawah this morning.  (Notice that it does not say cold! J) The sun is shining brightly, and should stick around for most of the day.

Carl Sandburg could have received his inspiration for his "Fog" poem last night or early this morning around Kiawah.  There were "fog fingers" scattered about, stretching across the marsh, reflected in the full moon.  In case you have not seen the poem recently, here it is:

The fog creeps in on little cat feet.
It sit on silent haunches,
Looking over harbor and city,
And then moves on.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One  bald eagle, one doe with a necklace and an ear ring, seven double-crested cormorants, one anole, and three raccoons.

December 8, 2003

After seeing the film clips of the football game yesterday in New England, it seems that property owner Ken Loderick's description of the snowstorm there was right on! From the photo he sent this morning, it would appear that we can no longer say that it is cold here on Kiawah!  But to us it certainly is!  Brrrr...

Did you know? Tonight is the Full Cold Moon, also called the Long Nights Moon by some American Indian tribes.   According to the Farmer's Almanac, it is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low sun.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One  bald eagle, two large bucks, dozens of snowy egrets at Sea Marsh Drive, four double-crested cormorants, one red-tailed hawk, one ladderback woodpecker, and two raccoons.

It is 43 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning.  Today's temperature is supposed to be near sixty. Tonight the temperature is supposed to be in the mid-forties.

December 7, 2003

It is a sunny, beautiful morning on Kiawah.  And while we may all think it is cold, property owner Ken Loderick informs us that where he lives near Boston it is downright FRIGID!  Ken sent a photo showing the first several inches of the snowstorm they received yesterday.  His area is on the way to 12 to 18 inches of the white stuff.  YIKES!  O.K. Ken, maybe it isn't so cold on Kiawah right now after all...

Something fun to do today: The Christmas parade is in downtown Charleston this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Bands, floats and marching performers will be parading starting at the intersection of Calhoun and Meeting Streets, heading down King Street to Broad Street and then to Lockwood Blvd.

Don't forget... Today is Pearl harbor Remembrance Day.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One  bald eagle, sixteen bicyclists, three deer, dozens of snowy egrets, twelve double-crested cormorants, and one raccoon.

December 6, 2003

It is bright and beautiful on  Kiawah this morning - but C-O-L-D!  All Kiawah critters, humans included, will be wearing something extra warm today.

Don't forget... to be extra careful on the roads today. There will be just under 1000 bicyclists on the roads in the Lowcountry today for the third annual "Rural Ride 'Round the Islands".  Most of the event takes place around Kiawah, Seabrook, Johns, and Wadmalaw islands.  The riders will be participating in several events, including a 100-mile "century ride".  When you see them, why not give a cheerful wave?

Something fun to do today: Today is the annual Holiday Parade of Boats!  It begins at 5:00 p.m.  Depending upon your choice of perches, be prepared to wait a bit to see the floating light display.  The parade begins at the Cooper River Bridge and goes to the James Island Connector.  When you see the fireworks in the harbor, the boats are nearing the Maritime Center.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One  bald eagle, two bucks showing off for one doe, two snowy egrets, five double-crested cormorants,  and one raccoon.

December 5, 2003

We have another overcast morning on Kiawah.  It is a tad foggy, and there are still a few showers at present. Not a terribly good morning for fishing or boating or doing outdoor activities.

Some folks have written in to ask about the small boat that is floating in the middle of the Kiawah River one the east side of the bridge closest to the front gate.  It has no motor and has been there for a few weeks.  Allison Harvey, town administrator, checked on the boat for us, and has this report:  "The boat has not been abandoned.  It is owned by a crabber and is used often (using oars).  According to the Coast Guard, the boat is allowed to stay so long as it is not blocking the main channel and has a light on at night." Just FYI...

Good for a laugh: Today is the 70th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition.  Only the state of Mississippi kept the 18th Amendment around longer, until 1966.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One  bald eagle, one buck, six hooded mergansers, three snowy egrets, seven double-crested cormorants,  and one mama raccoon with two babies.

It is 43 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning.  Today's temperature should be near sixty.  Tonight's low will be in the upper thirties.

December 4, 2003

Kiawah is gray and overcast this morning, with brief showers thrown into the mix.  A little dreary weather this morning, with more headed this way throughout the day.  The overall weather conditions today are not the greatest... The weather service tells us that there will be 5 to 7 foot seas off the coast, with a small craft advisory in effect for our entire area.  Not a good day for surfing either!

Since you can't spend today surfing (!), why not see a movie?  Every Thursday in December, the city of Charleston is showing free outdoor movies at Marion Square.  Tonight's movies are "The Santa Clause 2, at 6:00 p.m. and Holiday Inn, at 8:00 p.m.  Bring a blanket, something warm to drink, and check it out!

Eagle Update: Our eagles are still here, incubating on the nest.  Well, at least one of them is!  The other is busily watching over the nest and bringing food to its mate. The photo above was taken during the afternoon of December 2, 2003.  The eagle posed perfectly just prior to winging its way off past the front gate.  Stay tuned for more eagle photos and updates!

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One  bald eagle, three great blue herons, two snowy egrets, a dozen pelicans, five double-crested cormorants,  and one mama raccoon with two babies.

This Kiawah morning is cool and crisp.  But while we ponder our "cold" weather here, some of our northern brethren are wondering what all the fuss is about!  Ken Loderick reports that it was a mere 30 degrees there yesterday morning, with snow squalls and white out conditions.  Thanks Ken, for reminding us that cold is definitely relative!

Once again we have a clear, sunny morning on Kiawah.  It is still fairly cold outside by Kiawah standards - a mere 45 degrees at 9:00 a.m.!  But a sweatshirt and hat should take care of that for any brave souls who venture outside this morning.  Later today it will warm up, just in time for the first holiday get-together of the season.

Don't forget: Tonight is Kiawah's Annual Tree Lighting and Caroling gathering.  It takes place at the Kiawah Island Inn, and begins at 5:30 p.m.  So come on down, grab some cookies, and sing along with your neighbors!

Today is a momentous occasion for our community web site... <drum roll please>...

Happy Birthday!  That's right, our web site is one year old today.  More than 22,000 people have visited during the past year.  Here's hoping our next year is just as successful!

This morning is clear and sunny on Kiawah.  It certainly looks as if today will be a wonderful day for whatever you plan to do.  Perhaps a little holiday shopping is in order?

The photo above was taken by Kiawah's former mayor, Jim Piet. The photo shows Marilyn Blizard installing a set of wires on Jim's crab trap.  These special wires easily let the crabs in, but protect the rare diamondback terrapin turtles from entering. The wires are available free of charge at the Night Heron Park Nature Center.  Get yours today!  If you would like to read more about diamondback terrapins, click here to review the article on the Kiawah Island Natural Habitat Conservancy's web site.
