September 30, 2005 Week-end Edition

The skies are gray and overcast for Kiawah this morning. The clouds have rolled in and look to be sticking around for a while.  The temperature is quite nice however, so no excuses for staying inside all day!

Week-end Weather: It is 74 degrees at 9:10 Friday morning. The temperature Friday should range from highs in the upper seventies to lows in the lower seventies. There is a 20% chance of rain during the day & evening. Saturday's high is supposed to be near eighty, with a low near seventy. Again there is a 20% chance of showers both during the day & evening.  Last but not least, Sunday should bring mid-eighties for a high and seventy for the low temperature., There is a 20% chance of rain during the day & evening.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One praying mantis, five white-tailed deer, one great blue heron, two male cardinals, one mama raccoon with four babies, and dozens of snowy egrets.

September 29, 2005

Kiawah is back to being sunny and gorgeous this morning. The island received quite the drenching yesterday, as the rain kept up until well into the afternoon.

 What's going on... Today is another chance for you to participate in the planning process for Kiawah. The Planning Commission is holding a public hearing on plans for Captain Sam's Spit.  Why not head on over to Town Hall and see what's up?

Weather: It is 75 degrees at 9:15 this  morning. The temperature today is supposed to reach the upper eighties. Tonight's low should be in the low seventies.  There is a 30% chance of rain during the day and night.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One ruby-throated hummingbird, two white-tailed deer, one great blue heron, one male cardinal, one mama raccoon with four babies, and dozens of snowy egrets.

September 28, 2005

We are in the midst of a downpour on Kiawah this morning. It has been raining for a while now, though the thunder seems to have ceased. It has been a month since we have had some really serious rain on the island, so while we may not like it, our plants and yards certainly will!

Weather: It is 73 degrees at 9:15 this  morning. Today's high should be near eighty. The low tonight is supposed to be in the mid-seventies again.  There is a 40% chance of showers both today and tonight.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Four white-tailed deer, one wood stork, two male cardinals, two anoles, one mama raccoon with four babies, and dozens of snowy egrets.

September 27, 2005

The clouds rolled into Kiawah late last night, bringing us some brief sprinkles early this morning.  The sky is quite overcast - sort of a gunmetal gray - but it looks bright behind all the rain clouds. It looks like a day to grab a good book and curl up in your favorite armchair.    

The marsh along the Kiawah River The marsh is one of Kiawah's changing wildlife habitats.  If you watch it for any length of time, you will see flora and fauna galore!

Weather: It is 77 degrees at 9:15 this  morning. The high today is supposed to be in the low eighties with a 40% chance of showers. Tonight's low should be in the mid-seventies with a 20% chance of rain.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One ladderbacked woodpecker, dozens of painted lady butterflies, two white-tailed deer, two raccoons, and dozens of snowy egrets.

September 26, 2005

It is sunny on the island this morning, despite the chance of showers.  It looks to be another fabulous day on Kiawah! There is not much of a breeze, and it is warm and slightly humid. With the sun out in full force, it should be a terrific day to get outside and play!

Weather: It is 81 degrees at 9:15 this  morning. Today's high should be in the lower eighties with a 20% chance of rain. The low tonight is supposed to be in the low seventies with a 40% chance of showers.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count: Spotted at various times and places around the island during the week-end: three ladderbacked woodpeckers, dozens and dozens of painted lady butterflies in the dunes, three broad-headed skinks, six white-tailed deer, one anole, seven black vultures, three American alligators, five raccoons, twenty-seven pelicans, and dozens of snowy egrets.

September 23, 2005 Week-end Edition

It's another fabulous day on Kiawah Island - the birds are singing and the sun is shining! Yesterday's sprinkles have gone, leaving behind a nice breeze for us this morning. It looks to be a marvelous day today, with plenty of sunshine.  How will you celebrate this terrific weather?  Tennis?  Golf? A long bike ride?  Whatever your choice, today is sure to be a good day for it!

Week-end Weather: It is 78 degrees at 9:10 Friday morning. The high Friday is supposed to be in the upper eighties, and the low should be in the lower seventies. Saturday and Sunday are near perfect repeats of Friday's weather, with highs in the upper eighties and lows near seventy.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Dozens of painted lady butterflies, two white-tailed deer, three American alligators, four raccoons, thirteen pelicans, and dozens of snowy egrets.

September 22, 2005

Kiawah is gray and overcast this morning, and we have been on the receiving end of a few sprinkles.  The surf is crashing fiercely onto the beach, and the sky is an ominous shade of charcoal.  Looks like there won't be much playing outside today.  

A big HELLO to a first-time Kiawah visitor, Beryl Unger!  This lovely lady from Zimbabwe was strolling the beach this morning and stopped by our turtle patrol team to say hello.

Weather: It is 76 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The high today should be in the mid-eighties, with a 30% chance of showers. Tonight's low is supposed to be in the low seventies.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Six white-tailed deer, five of whom were traveling in a herd (How many deer does it take to make a herd?  Know the answer?  Click here to tell us!) one American alligator, two raccoons, five pelicans, and dozens of snowy egrets.

September 21, 2005

We have more sunshine this morning on Kiawah.  It is already fairly warm and humid - how do you spell H-U-M-I-D-I-T-Y?  It is steamy this morning. You can see windows fogged up as you walk down the street.  Our air conditioners will be working overtime!

Did you know?  Kiawah is home to many species of snakes.  You can find them in all parts of the island: the dunes, the maritime forest, the beach, the surf, the ponds, the marsh, and swampy areas. About half of South Carolina's 30 species of snakes can be found on Kiawah.  The Town of Kiawah Island has a terrific brochure describing some of Kiawah's snakes.  It is free, and is available at the Visitor's Center at the Town Hall.

Kiawah is mostly sunny this morning, and quite humid too. It certainly appears that today will be another beautiful island day, so be sure to go outside and play!

Weather: It is 81 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The high today should be in the mid-eighties.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the low seventies.

September 19, 2005 

We have a sunny Monday on Kiawah this morning. After a very hot week-end, this morning is a wee bit cooler, thank goodness!  What will you do to soak up the sun today? 

Weather: It is 79 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's high is supposed to be in the mid-eighties with a 20% chance of rain.  The low tonight should be in the mid-seventies.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count: Spotted at various times & places on Kiawah during the week-end: one red-headed woodpecker, eleven white-tailed deer, two great blue herons, five raccoons, twenty-five pelicans, one praying mantis, several golden silk spiders, and dozens of snowy egrets.

September 16, 2005  Week-end Edition

Kiawah is partly sunny this morning, with just a slight breeze. Sunrise was fabulous - a glowing orange ball rising slowly above the sea oats and dunes.  Have you seen the beach at sunrise recently?  It's worth the trip!

KICA News: Quarterly server maintenance will be conducted this weekend, overnight between 1:00am and 9:00am (Eastern) on Sunday, September 18. The KICA website and email (and thus, the List) may be inaccessible during that time. Visitors to the website will be greeted with a brief message explaining the maintenance and inviting the visitors to return to the site after 9:00am. Any emails that are sent during that time will be stored and delivered once maintenance is complete.

Beach Sweep: Don't forget the beach sweep Saturday at 8:30 a.m.!

Astronomy 101: The Full Harvest Moon is Saturday at 9:01 pm. This is the full Moon that  occurs closest to the autumn equinox. At the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this Moon. Usually the full Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the Moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S.

Heat Index: We have another heat advisory in effect from noon until 8:00 p.m. Friday. The heat index will be near 105.

Week-end Weather: It is 78 degrees at 9:00 Friday morning. The temperatures today should range from a high in the mid-nineties to lows in the mid-seventies.  There is a 20% chance of showers tonight.  Saturday is supposed to have a high near ninety with a 20% chance of rain, and a low near seventy.  Sunday should be a repeat of Saturday, with highs near ninety and lows near seventy.

September 15, 2005

Kiawah is sunny and gorgeous this morning. Now that Ophelia has left for parts North, the heat of summer will be back with a vengeance.  We are expecting near record temperatures today as summer reminds us that it is still here!    

Hurricane Ophelia News: This is our final update.  Ophelia is currently sitting just off the Outer Banks in NC. Kiawah suffered no damage from this hurricane, just some brief showers and occasional gusty winds. We are thankful it passed us by.

Weather: It is 77 degrees at 9:10 this morning. The temperatures today are supposed to be near ninety. Tonight's low should be in the mid-seventies. 

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two white-tailed deer, two bottle-nosed dolphins, one raccoon, seven pelicans, several golden silk spiders, and dozens of snowy egrets. 

September 14, 2005

Kiawah is back to bright sunshine this morning.  It would seem that Mother Nature passed us by this time. It would seem that Ophelia brought us only a few brief showers and occasional gusty winds. We are grateful!

Weather: Watch out for occasional wind gusts, perhaps up to 45 mph. It is 76 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's high should be in the upper eighties with a 30% chance of rain. The low tonight is supposed to be in the low seventies.

September 13, 2005

It is very cloudy on Kiawah this morning as Ophelia brings us showers and winds. We really have not had much rain yet - just a few sprinkles last night.  There were a few strong wind gusts during the night, but thus far nothing significant.  That may change later this afternoon, as the weather folks tell us we could receive up to 45 mph winds.

NOAA has posted this update: AT 8 AM EDT...1200Z...THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM OPHELIA WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 32.2 NORTH...LONGITUDE 77.8 WEST OR ABOUT 145 MILES SOUTH OF WILMINGTON NORTH CAROLINA AND ABOUT 140 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF CHARLESTON SOUTH CAROLINA. NOAA BUOY 41004 RECENTLY REPORTED SUSTAINED WINDS OF 40 MPH.

Island News: Paving of the inbound lane of Governor's Drive between the Vanderhorst Gate and the first Flyway intersection will begin on today and will continue through Thursday, September 15, 2005. So that traffic is not disrupted more than necessary, the work is scheduled each evening, beginning at midnight and concluding at 7:00 a.m.

The clouds seem to be rolling in right now.  Kiawah started out beautiful and sunny this morning, but the outer bands of Ophelia are getting close, and it is clouding up.  We should see some rain today...

September 9, 2005 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is lovely and sunny this morning. The temperature is still fairly cool, and at sunrise the sky was the most amazing shade of pink... Hurricane Ophelia is still well off the coast, but bears watching.  The Weather Channel says it will be another 5 or 6 days before we will know her ultimate destination. 

Don't Forget: The public hearing on the proposed Development Agreement at the Town Hall Friday at 2:00 p.m.

Eagle News: One of the nice things about this community web site is the ability to look back on the past few years and see trends, and this one is TERRIFIC!  Each fall our Kiawah eagles have shown up around September 9th.  So start watching the skies for our most famous and loved residents!

Kiawah is cool and very breezy this morning.  We have cloud-covered gray skies and no sunshine to speak of.  But it is a gloriously cool day, so here's hoping you enjoy it!

Don't Forget! Tonight's public hearing at the Town Hall on the proposed Development Agreement.  

Weather Advisory: There is a high surf advisory until 9:00 p.m. tonight.  In addition, the Lowcountry is supposed to experience winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour, with gusts up to 35 miles per hour. Be careful on those bridges, y'all!

We have another wonderfully cool morning on Kiawah this morning.  The breeze is soft and fresh, moving gently through the Spanish moss. Some might even say this is perfect Kiawah weather.  Would you?

Island News: The roundabout is finished!  The lane going from Kiawah to Charleston has been unveiled, so now when leaving the island you no longer drive on the roundabout.  Ditto for the lane heading to Seabrook from Bohicket Road.

September 5, 2005 Labor Day

Kiawah is sunny and cool this morning, and it feels terrific! It seems that we will have a wonderful Labor Day, perfect for picnics, beach time, and just general lazing around.  Here's hoping your holiday is fantastic!

It is 70 degrees at 8:45 this morning. Today's high is supposed to be in the mid-eighties.  The low tonight should be in the low seventies.  There is a 20% chance of showers both today and tonight.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count: Seen at various times & places on Kiawah during the week-end: four baby loggerhead turtles, four raccoons, two anoles, two five-lined skinks, dozens of pelicans and sea gulls, several golden silk spiders, and dozens of snowy egrets.

September 2, 2005 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is mostly sunny this morning, and very humid. The weather this week-end should be marvelous, with no change of showers forecasted as of Friday morning.  Will you be able to get outside and play? 

Don't Forget: KICA's Friday Night Farewell Fiesta at  the Sandcastle.  From 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, this promises to be a fabulous time for everyone!

It is 75 degrees at 8:30 Friday morning. The high should be in the mid-eighties, and the low is supposed to be in the upper seventies. Saturday should bring highs in the mid-eighties, and lows in the mid-seventies.  Last but not least, Sunday is supposed to have highs in the mid-eighties and lows near seventy.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two baby loggerhead turtles, four raccoons, two anoles, one five-lined skink, eleven pelicans, several golden silk spiders, and dozens of snowy egrets.

Kiawah is covered with more gray overcast skies this morning. It seems much cooler than it has been recently.  In fact, when was the last time we had a morning with a "7" in the temperature?  It has certainly been a while! 

Island News:  The Town of Kiawah Island has announced that the inbound lane of Kiawah Island Parkway (near main Freshfields entrance) will close for 4-5 hours beginning Thursday, Sept. 1 at 9:00am. Flagmen will be directing traffic. Should you have any questions, please direct them to the Town of Kiawah Island at (843) 768-9166 or e-mail the Town.

It is 79 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The high today is supposed to be in the mid-eighties. Tonight's low should be in the low seventies.
