November 22, 2005

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning, but COLD! Yesterday morning it was 63, but this morning it is 48!  YIKES!  What is up with that?

Extremely gusty winds visited the island late yesterday and some of them are still hanging around.  We saw 25 mile per hour winds, with gusts near 50.  So now in addition to getting the kitchen ready for Thanksgiving, many folks have to hit the yard to tidy up all the palm fronds and branches.

November 21, 2005

Kiawah is trying to pull some sunshine from the sky this morning, but only partially succeeding.  Yesterday's rain is still close by, and it looks like it isn't going anywhere anytime soon.  How will you escape the rain today?

The sprinkles began at dusk yesterday.  The showers continued well past bedtime and into the wee hours of the morning, getting harder and heavier as they went.

Weather: It is 63 degrees at 9:10 this morning. The high today is supposed to be in the upper sixties. But before you get excited, you should know that there is a 90% chance of thunderstorms! Tonight's low should be in the upper forties, with a 40% chance of rain.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count: Spotted at various times & places around the island over the week-end: one fox, seven white-tailed deer, six double-crested cormorants,  three great blue herons, three American alligators, one mama raccoon with four babies, and dozens of snowy egrets.

November 18, 2005   Week-end Edition

It is indeed bright and beautiful on Kiawah this morning. But brrrrrrr!  It is chilly out there!

It is "Rivalry Week-end" in college football.  There will be lots of folks who don't mind the cold front, as they will be parked in front of the television, cheering on their favorite team.  Are you a football fan? Or perhaps you will be starting on Thanksgiving preparations?  Whatever you do this week-end, try to stay warm!

Astronomy 101 The Leonid meteor shower should be visible tonight.  The meteors are best viewed in the "early morning hours" (translate that to 2:30 a.m.).  Leftover dust and ice from Comet Tempel-Tuttle create the meteors. So grab a lawn chair and a really warm blanket, face east to look for the constellation Leo, and start watching!

Week-end Weather: It is a mere 41 degrees at 9:10 Friday morning. YIKES!  Friday's high should be near sixty.  The low is supposed to be in the upper thirties.  On Saturday highs should reach the low sixties, with lows dropping to the upper forties. There is a 40% chance of rain Saturday evening.  Sunday also sports a chance of rain, 40% during the day, with a high in the mid-sixties, and 20% at night, with a low in the low fifties. *** PLANT WATCH ***

November 17, 2005

Kiawah is sunny but cold this morning. A slight breeze is stirring the Spanish moss, and wind chimes are gently ringing.

Yesterday some folks went from air conditioners during the day to heaters at night!  Anyone who went to sleep last night with their windows open certainly received a shock this morning! Quite a difference in temperature, wasn't it?

Today is the Great American Smoke-out. The idea for it came from Arthur P. Mullaney, a Massachusetts resident who asked people to give up smoking for a day in 1971 and donate the money they would have spent on tobacco to a local high school. In 1976, the California division of the American Cancer Society successfully prompted nearly one million smokers to quit for the day. That California event marked the first Smokeout, and the Society took it nationwide in 1977.  Do you know anyone who might *quit* smoking for a day?

Weather: It is 55 degrees at 9:20 this morning. Today's high should be near sixty.  The low tonight is supposed to be in the low forties.  *** PLANT WATCH ***

November 16, 2005

We have more sunshine on Kiawah this morning, and it is nice and warm.  In fact, it was almost hot yesterday, as folks on the golf courses & tennis courts shed their sweaters and enjoyed a terrific day.

Did you catch a glimpse of last night's Full Frosty Moon?  It was dazzling!  We didn't get to see much of it though, as the drizzly rain kept it hidden until after most of us were asleep.

Have you heard any owls recently?  Both screech owls and great horned owls have been serenading across Kiawah's marshes each night.  If you click on the owl links in this paragraph, you can listen to their calls.

November 9, 2005

Kiawah is sunny and beautiful this morning.  This should be a marvelous day for enjoying yourself outdoors.  How will you enjoy the day?

Yesterday's fog seems to have gone, but not before turning Kiawah into a fairyland yesterday evening. Folks out and about saw mist draped across branches and Spanish moss, swirling gently above the marshes. Even the moon seemed to be peering through a fine mist.

Weather: It is 66 degrees at 9:10 this morning.  Today's high is supposed to be in the mid-seventies.  The low tonight should be in the mid-sixties.

If you look closely you can still see some rays of sunshine, but this morning Kiawah is covered with fog. It is fairly cool, and the fog shrouds the oak trees, giving the Spanish moss an eerie look.  Visibility is low, so please be careful if you are driving!

The Island Craft Show at the Sandcastle was very well attended Saturday.  There were booths for jewelry, pottery, purses, Christmas items, ceramics, Creative Memories, photographs... you name it!  A grand time was had by all who attended.

Kiawah is sunny again morning, a terrific start to a crisp, cool fall day. The sky is a magnificent  shade of blue, with nary a cloud drifting by.

Waking up this morning was a real treat, with not one, but TWO pileated woodpeckers just outside the window.  There is no mistaking their rat-a-tat-tat as they search for their bug breakfast. Have you ever seen a pileated woodpecker?

Weather: It is 65 degrees at 9:10 this morning. Today's high should once again be in the mid-seventies. The low tonight is supposed to be in the mid-fifties. What a nice weather repeat!

November 2, 2005

Kiawah is back to its naturally sunny self this morning. November certainly is starting out with wonderful weather!  It is officially the end of hurricane season, but we have had nothing resembling a hurricane for more than a month.  The weather has been mostly cooperative and brought sunshine and moderate temperatures.  But then again, perhaps that is why you chose Kiawah in the first place?

Sunset over Cougar Island This sunset over Cougar Island was absolutely beautiful!  The clouds held the purples, pinks and oranges for what seemed like an eternity.  Have a photo you would like to share?  Click here to send it.

After several successive days of sunshine, Kiawah is overcast this morning. It is a bit warmer than recent mornings, and there we have a slight drizzle.

Can you believe that it is November already?  Doesn't it seem like Labor Day was a couple of weeks ago?  It will be Thanksgiving before you know it!

Weather: It is 63 degrees at 9:05 this morning. Today's high should be in the mid-seventies. The low tonight is supposed to be near sixty.  There is a 20% chance of showers today and tonight.
