May 31, 2005

We have more cloudy skies on Kiawah this morning. The humidity is very much in evidence - it will almost be a relief when it does begin to rain.  For now though, the ceiling fans get turned to high and the windows thrown open.  Few enough days remain before summer truly arrives and the air conditioner is a must!

Turtle News: As of Monday May 30th, we have 12 nests on our beach! Though those loggerhead mamas got a late start this year, they are catching up to previous years.

It certainly appears that beach time is out again today, but you can still find lots to do!  Check out the Something Fun To Do Today link below or the Things to do Off Island link on the right for some ideas.

It is 68 degrees at 9:15 this morning. The temperature today should be in the mid-seventies with a 40% chance of showers.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the upper sixties with a 50% chance of rain.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One osprey on its nest at Osprey Point golf course (how appropriate!), one great blue heron, one anole, three white-tailed deer, one blue jay, three American alligators, dozens of snowy egrets, and one raccoon with babies.

May 30, 2005 Memorial Day

Our Memorial Day has begun with gray, cloudy skies. It was drizzly earlier, and looks to be rainy throughout the day.

While beach time may be out for today, you can still find lots to do!  Check out the Something Fun To Do Today link below or the Things to do Off Island link on the right for some ideas.

It is 66 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's high is supposed to be in the upper seventies.  The low tonight should be in the mid-sixties. There is a 70% chance of rain both today and tonight.

Kiawah Island Garden Club - Edna Roberds puts a native plant in the ground as George Bell digs a new hole for seedlings begun by Club members in the KICA greenhouse last fall.  About 50 plants, all of which are vital in the life cycle of the monarch butterfly, were set in the ground by this team.

Eleanor Harris, Maria Chapman, Becky Ackerman, and Joyce Neuman are ready to help along with another member of the KICA landscaping crew.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count: Spotted at various places around Kiawah over the week-end: three osprey, three broad-headed skinks, two anoles, one Black Racer snake, two Carolina wrens, one white ibis, nine white-tailed deer, four blue jays, seven American alligators, dozens of snowy egrets, and one raccoon with babies.  Heard but not seen: several chuck wills widows.

May 27, 2005 Week-end Edition

We have more sunshine on Kiawah this morning. The few clouds overhead drift slowly along, pushed by a light breeze. The Spanish moss is swaying slowly in the breeze as well, and the birds are all a-twitter. Looks like another fabulous day in paradise!

Wednesday gave us another perfect sleeping weather night.  Can't be too many of them remaining...

 May 25, 2005

The sunshine is in full force on Kiawah this morning. We have a cool morning with just a slight breeze.

Last night was probably one of the last cool nights - perfect sleeping weather!  Though it was a bit chilly this morning because of open windows, it was worth it to be serenaded to sleep by the chuck wills widows and frogs.

Turtle News: At last, something to report!  The first loggerhead turtle nests have been laid on Kiawah's beach.  Nest #1 was found and marked by turtle patrol Monday morning, and Tuesday morning #2 showed up.  Go, mamas, go!  Remember:  if you see a female loggerhead nesting DO NOT DISTURB HER!  Stay a minimum of several yards away, making sure to be at her "back" or tail, rather than her head.  This will prevent you from startling or scaring her while she nests.

It is 62 degrees at 9:20 this morning. Today's high should be in the mid-seventies. The low tonight is supposed to be in the upper fifties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two osprey, one five-lined skink, one anole, two Carolina wrens, three white-tailed deer, three blue jays, five American alligators, dozens of snowy egrets, and one raccoon with babies.  Heard but not seen: two  chuck wills widows.

It would appear that the sun was the victor in the battle with the clouds this morning. So Kiawah has sunshine, at least for the moment.

Lots of folks enjoyed the weather this week-end, despite its rainy beginning. The symphony performance was well-attended Saturday evening, and Sunday bicyclists, walkers, runners, and roller bladers were out and about on the paths.

Kiawah Birds Today's photo is shared by Kelly Bragg.  These are some of your Kiawah "neighbors"!  Do you recognize any of these birds?

It is 72 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Today's high should be in the low eighties with a 20% chance of rain. The low tonight is supposed to be in the mid-sixties, also with a 20% chance of showers.

We do have sunshine on Kiawah this morning, but the sky is full of clouds. Let's hope that we get at least some periods of sunshine this week-end!

There are scores of blossoms on Kiawah these days.  Oleander flowers are beginning to peek out of their buds - white, red, and pink blossoms have been spotted so far.  The red bottlebrush blooms are nearly spent, but the magnolias are still around.

It is 75 degrees at 9:15 Friday morning. Friday's high is supposed to be near eighty with a 70% chance of rain. The low Friday night should be in the mid-sixties, also with a 70% chance of showers. Kiawah is sunny, no wait, it's cloudy, no wait SUNNY this morning.  Hmmm... Mother Nature can't seem to make up her mind about this!  Hopefully the showers have moved out of the area for the time being, and we can all get outside to play today.

Spoleto begins soon, and many of you will have guests for the next few weeks. If you are looking to entertain and wonder what to do, remember to check our newest site feature, "Things To Do". If you see something missing, please let us know!

May 17, 2005

OK, so maybe not Camelot.  After a terrific beginning, yesterday turned out to be a pretty soggy day on Kiawah.  Nice for gardens, yards, and ducks, but not so much for beach-goers.  Given the overcast skies this morning, we may be in for more of the same.  Hope you have a good book, just in case!

It is 73 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The temperature today should be in the upper seventies again, with a 30% chance of showers...again! Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-sixties, also with a 30% chance of rain.

May 16, 2005

Heavy rain showers played across Kiawah early this morning, leaving puddles and humidity in their wake. But the sun is shining again, and the cacophony of birdsong is in full swing. Seems like it will be yet another fabulous day on Kiawah!  Or should we call it Camelot? J

May 13, 2005  Week-end Edition

Kiawah is already warm this morning.  The sun is shining brightly, though there are oodles of clouds in the sky.

Do you have triskaidekaphobia?  If so, today is your least favorite day. The definition of triskaidekaphobia is "fear of the number 13" but is generally used to refer to the fear of the inauspicious date Friday the 13th.  Here's hoping that today's 13th is a lucky one!

May 12, 2005

It is another lovely day on Kiawah. Sunshine looks to be the order of the day, so grab the sunscreen and go outside and play!  Golf or tennis, running or walking, biking or rollerblading, today should be the perfect day to "just do it".

Nesting season has begun for pelicans, eye-catching oystercatchers, royal terns, snowy egrets and black skimmers. Adult birds abandon nests if approached, and the eggs, laid right on the ground and camouflaged, can easily be stepped on. Nesting locations are closed until the end of nesting season, Oct. 15th.  Kiawah is not a nesting spot, but many nearby islands are, so please be careful!

A Diamondback Terrapin struts her stuff Marilyn Blizard shares today's photo of a female Diamondback Terrapin. This little lady is known as "Lonely Lucy" since she is the only known Diamondback Terrapin in Kiawah's Terrapin Creek. Click here to read more about these rare turtles

May 11, 2005

We are back to sunshine on Kiawah this morning. We had a high of just over 80 yesterday, and today will be nearly as warm.  From the chilly fifties last week to the mid-eighties this week... what will Mother Nature think of next?

Have you seen any...lightning bugs yet?  Last night the first lightning bugs of the season were spotted.  They were merrily flashing their lighted tails while flying through the marsh.  If that isn't a harbinger of warm weather, what is?

It is 67 degrees at 9:10 this morning.  Today's temperature is supposed to reach a high in the upper seventies.  There is a 30% chance of rain.  The low tonight should be in the low sixties. There is also a 30% chance of showers tonight.

May 10, 2005

There are clouds over Kiawah this morning, but the sun is trying to peek through. We seem to be in the midst of the next "blooming season" on Kiawah.  Magnolias blooms seem headed for the sky, and the oleanders are beginning to show buds as well.  Soon there will be hundreds of delightful blossoms everywhere, their delicate scent wafting in the breeze.

There is a handsome male cardinal sitting outside the window, singing at the top of his lungs.  He must be trying to impress his lady, because he has been at it for quite a while! Can you hear any birdsong where you are right now?

It is 71 degrees at 9:10 this morning.  The high today should be in the low eighties.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-sixties. There is a 20% chance of showers this afternoon and tonight.

May 6, 2005 Week-end Edition

The rain has stopped on Kiawah, at least temporarily. The sun is valiantly struggling to establish a hold in the sky, and will hopefully chase away the remaining chance of showers.

Last night's storms wreaked havoc on island electricity, as most of the back half of the island was without power for a couple of hours.  Wednesday night it was the front half of the island.  Guess Mother Nature is taking turns! J

It is 66 degrees at 9:20 Friday morning.  Friday's temperatures should range from a high in the mid-sixties to a low in the lower fifties.  There is a 30% chance of rain Friday afternoon.  The high Saturday is supposed to be in the mid-seventies.  The low Saturday night should be in the upper fifties.  Sunday's high is supposed to be in the mid-seventies again, with lows  near sixty Sunday night.

It's Loggerhead Turtle Time! This photo of a Kiawah loggerhead comes from Kelly Bragg.  Soon "our" loggerheads will begin their arduous crawls up onto our beach to lay their eggs.  Lights out for sea turtles!

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One very wet raccoon, five red-winged blackbirds, one anole, two double-crested cormorants, one white-tailed deer, four American alligators, and dozens of snowy egrets.  Heard but not seen: two chuck wills widows.

May 5, 2005

Heavy showers arrived on Kiawah very early this morning, and it has been raining steadily for hours. Doesn't Mother Nature know that the saying is APRIL showers bring MAY flowers?  It is May now, isn't it?  Still, the rain is good news for gardeners and island plant life.  Soon we should see blooms popping up everywhere!

Astronomy 101: If the rain stops, the last phase of the Eta Aquarids meteor showers can be seen tonight. It is a small shower of 20 to 40 meteors per hour, with very swift, long paths.  Optimum viewing will be towards the Southeast between 2 and 4 a.m. Head out to the beach, grab a chair, and probably an umbrella? J

Astronomy 101: The Eta Aquarids meteor showers can be seen tonight. It is a relatively small shower, with 20 to 40 meteors per hour. The meteors should have very swift, long paths.  Optimum viewing will be towards the Southeast between 2 and 4 a.m. So find a place with a clear view of the sky and grab a chair, and tonight, probably a blanket!

We have more sunshine and birdsong on Kiawah this morning. It is a tad chilly, but will warm up enough to get outside and play.  What are you going to do to enjoy this incredible weather?

Loggerhead turtle season is about to start here on the island.  Folks have already started asking about the posts on the beach. The posts are there as location markers, and are NOT nests. The turtles won't begin nesting for a couple of weeks yet. Meanwhile, please remember:  if you see a female loggerhead, DO NOT DISTURB IT.  Stay several yards behind it and quietly observe.

It is 55 degrees at 9:00 this morning. The temperature should be in the mid-seventies today.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-fifties once again.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One five-lined skink, one broad-headed skink, two anoles, two double-crested cormorants, two white-tailed deer, one American alligator, dozens of snowy egrets, and one raccoon

May 2, 2005

Kiawah is fabulous this morning, with birds singing happily, lazy fat clouds drifting through the sky, and a very slight breeze.  The Spanish moss seems to be floating in the branches of the trees as Kiawah's critters, humans and otherwise, go about their business.

It is 55 degrees at 8:50 this morning. Today's high is supposed to be in the low seventies.  The low tonight should be in the mid-fifties.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count: Seen at various places around Kiawah over the week-end: three, count them!  THREE snakes!  One was a Black Racer snake, but the other two were too quick to identify.  Two broad-headed skinks, three anoles, three double-crested cormorants, eight white-tailed deer, three male cardinals, four American alligators, one osprey, dozens of snowy egrets, and one raccoon At least two chuck wills widows and one great horned owl were heard but not seen.
