March 31, 2005

After an earlier sunshiny beginning, Kiawah is a tad overcast at present. And if the predicted showers arrive this afternoon we will miss the "out like a lamb" ending to March!

Spring has certainly sprung here on the island.  How can you tell?  Two things now cover nearly everything on Kiawah: a yellow "sheen" and leaves from the live oaks.  Yes, it's that time of year again.  Time to get out the leaf blower and time to grab your allergy medication. J

It is 68 degrees at 9:00 this morning.  Today's temperature should be in the low seventies with a 50% chance of showers this afternoon. The low tonight is supposed to be in the lower sixties, also with a 50% chance of rain.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Four American alligators including one wee one near the Beach Club, one anole, one great blue heron, two osprey, three double-crested cormorants, dozens of snowy egrets, and one raccoon.  Heard but not seen: a  chuck wills widow and a great horned owl.

March 30, 2005

Kiawah is putting on its best show this morning.  The birds are singing happily and brilliant sunshine douses the landscape.  Far better than the rain that has doused us recently! More and more signs of spring are popping up around the island - azaleas are strutting their stuff, dogwoods have blossomed, and butterflies are beginning to appear.  Everywhere you look you see bursts of color.

It is 68 degrees at 9:20 this morning.  The high temperature today is supposed to be near eighty. No, that is NOT a typographical error!  Tonight's low should be in the upper fifties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two anoles, three American alligators, one great blue heron, two osprey, seven brown pelicans, eight double-crested cormorants, dozens of snowy egrets, and one raccoon.

March 29, 2005

Kiawah is bathed in sunshine this morning, with not a cloud to be seen. The sky is bright and blue, and filled with birdsong.  Could it be that we have finally reached the "out like a lamb" portion of March?  Let us hope so!

It is 59 degrees at 9:30 this morning.  Today's temperature should be near seventy. The low tonight is supposed to be in the lower fifties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One American alligator, two great blue herons, one osprey, eleven brown pelicans, two double-crested cormorants, dozens of snowy egrets, and one raccoon.

March 28, 2005

After a completely sodden week-end, we are catching a brief glimpse of sunshine this morning.  The island received so much rain during the storms over the week-end that there is standing water in most of the low-lying places.  A few folks managed to squeeze in bike rides or runs between the rain showers, but it was mostly an inside sort of week-end.  Let's hope the week brings better conditions!

Today's photo comes to us courtesy of Dave Loderick.  Dave is a frequent contributor to our site.  Thanks for sharing Dave!  If you have photos to share, you can  E-mail the webmaster Be sure to provide credit to the photographer, as we can only accept your personal photos. We would love to see your snapshots.

It is 67 degrees at 9:10 this morning.  The high today is supposed to be in the mid-sixties with a 40% chance of rain. Tonight's lows should be in the upper forties.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count: Not too many critters spotted this week-end due to all the rain!  However, in various places around the island: two female white-tailed deer, one anole, three American alligators, six brown pelicans, four double-crested cormorants, dozens of snowy egrets, and one raccoon.

March 25, 2005  Week-end Edition

We are back to overcast skies on Kiawah this morning. It is Easter week-end, and the island is full of visitors.  The paths are full of bikers, walkers, and runners, and there were even a few intrepid swimmers yesterday afternoon!

Easter Update: Easter activities scheduled for Freshfields this week-end have been cancelled due to construction delays.

Astronomy: The Full Worm Moon begins at 3:58 pm Friday afternoon. It is so named because as the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter.

It is 67 degrees at 9:15 Friday morning.  Friday's temperatures should range from a high in the mid-sixties to a low in the upper fifties. There is a 60% chance of thunderstorms during the day.  The high Saturday is supposed to be in the upper sixties with a 20% chance of rain.  The low during the night should be near sixty with a 70% chance of showers.  Sunday should be more of the same, with temperatures going from the mid-sixties to a low in the upper fifties. There is a 70% chance of rain during the day and 40% Sunday night.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Five female white-tailed deer, two anoles, one American alligator ten brown pelicans, eight double-crested cormorants, dozens of snowy egrets, and one raccoon.  Heard but not seen: a chuck wills widow and at least two screech owls.

March 24, 2005

The sun has decided to reappear on Kiawah! We are being treated to something we have not seen much of during this past week...SUNSHINE!  What a fantastic sight to see the leaves swathed in sunlight again.  I don't know about you, but I think that this merits some serious time spent outside today.  What will you do to enjoy the sunshine?

It is 61 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  Today's high should be in the mid-sixties. The low tonight is supposed to be in the upper fifties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One anole, two American alligators one of which was very tiny, three brown pelicans, two double-crested cormorants, dozens of snowy egrets, and one raccoon.

March 23, 2005

The National Weather Service was right about last night's storms, at least about the rain and strong winds.  Kiawah did not experience any  large hail, but we certainly were walloped with the winds!  A quick look out the window this morning shows Kiawah to be covered with small tree limbs, palm fronds, and live oak leaves.  With more showers nearby, it seems that we can't start our clean-up just yet...

Eagle Update:  Both eaglets were spotted flying about the nest Sunday, with one parent keeping watch. No doubt "our" bald eagles will depart soon, now that both eaglets are successfully flying.

It is 70 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  The high today is supposed to be near seventy with a 70% chance of thunderstorms. Tonight's low should be in the low fifties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Three anoles (or would that be anoli?), one American alligator, two black vultures, ten brown pelicans, eight double-crested cormorants, dozens of snowy egrets, and one raccoon.

March 22, 2005

It is drizzly on Kiawah this morning. Once in a while the sun tries to peep out between the clouds. Every so often the leaves on the trees are illuminated by golden light - and then the sun ducks back behind the clouds.

Yesterday was a wonderful day for anyone on the island!  It certainly seemed that everyone who was here was outside in some fashion - on foot, on bicycles, on roller blades...there were even a few intrepid swimmers down by The Beach Club!  Did you get outside yesterday?

Eagle Update:  Both eaglets were spotted flying about the nest Sunday, with one parent keeping watch. No doubt "our" bald eagles will depart soon, now that both eaglets are successfully flying.

It is 60 degrees at 9:00 this morning.  Today's temperature should be in the mid-sixties with showers all morning. The low tonight is supposed to be near sixty with a 70% chance of thunderstorms. Kiawah is a bit gray and overcast this morning. Not a very auspicious beginning for spring, is it?

Today is the Spring Solstice - The spring solstice or vernal equinox is the day in spring when daytime and nighttime are of equal length. This holiday has been celebrated by mankind for thousands of years. The earliest civilizations kept track of the seasons and stars, to help plan their planting and gathering schedules, and for many societies, the spring solstice marked the end of winter and the approach of spring, fertility, and fresh food.

It is 58 degrees at 9:00 this morning.  The high today is supposed to be in near sixty with a 20% chance of showers. Tonight's low should be in the lower fifties with a 40% chance of rain.

March 18, 2005 Week-end Edition

We are still experiencing a few sprinkles here and there on Kiawah this morning, though nothing serious.  It looks like the rain will clear out just in time for...

It is 42 degrees at 9:00 Friday morning.  Friday's temperatures should range from a high in the upper forties to lows in the mid-forties.  Looks like great weather for the KICA week-end, with a high Saturday in the low sixties, and a low that night in the upper forties.  Sunday's high is supposed to be in the upper sixties, with lows in the lower fifties Sunday night.

Kiawah is waterlogged again this morning, with showers expected throughout the day.

Kiawah is in the spirit of the holiday, the "wearin' o' the green"!  The island is turning greener and greener each day.  The live oaks have already begun dropping their leaves, a sure sign that they will be greening up soon as well!

Traffic News: Bohicket Road is supposed be closed this afternoon from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. for a few visiting dignitaries. Everyone is encouraged to use River Road during that time.  According to the KIRE folks, our visitors will be Bill Clinton, Colin Powell, Vice President Cheney, and the King of Jordan.  If this information is correct, we can expect traffic delays on the island as well!

To all you Romans out there, beware the Ides of March!

Eagle Update: Four bald eagles were spotted by a crew of kayakers Sunday - two adults and two eaglets. One of the babes seems ready to be on its own, as it took a few flights during our visit.  It seemed to have no trouble negotiating the strong winds or anything else for that matter!  The other eaglet seems sluggish and was unmoving during the hour we watched.  Please keep your fingers crossed for our second eaglet as it seems to be in trouble.

It is 51 degrees at 9:10 this morning.  Today's temperatures are supposed to be near sixty during the day, with a low near fifty tonight.  There is a slight chance of showers during the night.

March 10, 2005

Kiawah is thankfully back in the sunshine this morning.  It is warmer than the past few days, and the sun is a most welcome visitor!

Ken Loderick, a frequent visitor to our site, had the following response to yesterday's cooler temperature comment: "If you think things are chilly on Kiawah you should be up here in Boston! Last night we had wind gusts of 50 mph and whiteout snow conditions. This morning I got to go out at 6 AM in the 11 degree temperature to clean up my driveway and walkways. We've had about 80 inches of snow so far and winter is not over. It looks like we're going to get more snow on Friday evening continuing into Saturday. March didn't come in like a lion here. It came in more like a VERY angry 12 foot gator! :-)"  Good luck to Ken and our other Northern friends who are trying to stay warm!

Eagle Update: Though our bald eagles are no longer living where we can see them each day, lots of folks are still interested in what they are up to. Last we knew, there were eggs in the nest that should have hatched by now, and indeed they have!  And there is not one, but TWO baby eaglets!  J That is happy news for the eagle lovers amongst us.

March 9, 2005

No sunshine on Kiawah this morning, just a slight breeze and cool temperatures with an overcast sky. So what's up with this "in like a lion" thing again?  Shouldn't that part be over now that we are into the second week of March?

Eagle Update: Though our bald eagles are no longer living where we can see them each day, lots of folks are still interested in what they are up to. Last we knew, there were eggs in the nest that should have hatched by now, and indeed they have!  And there is not one, but TWO baby eaglets!  J That is happy news for the eagle lovers amongst us.

Kiawah Island and the Blustery Day... (with apologies to A.A. Milne) The National Weather Service was right about the gusting winds ,and that is quite the understatement!  Kiawah was buffeted by extremely strong winds after midnight last night, and they are still here.  It is warm however, and the sun is shining brightly.  Looks like lots of folks will be busy today, picking up all the branches & leaves strewn about by the winds.

It is 57 degrees at 9:25 this morning.  The high today is supposed to be in the lower sixties with a 70% chance of showers. There is a wind advisory until 6:00 p.m. this evening. Tonight's low should be in the mid-thirties**PLANT WATCH **

March 3, 2005

Enough with March's lion already!  More gusty winds yesterday, and they brought cold weather with them.  Brrrrr... Kiawah is overcast this morning, and not so warm.

Spring plants are beginning to "strut their stuff", and you can see daffodils popping up here and there, especially along the Kiawah Island Parkway.  Soon Kiawah will be covered with signs of spring.  Have you spotted any newly sprouted greenery lately?

It is 41 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  Today's temperature is supposed to reach the mid-fifties.  The low tonight should be in the upper thirties again.

** PLANT WATCH **

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Are they the same two double-crested cormorants near Marsh Island Drive?  They were there again, and so were seven at Cougar Point golf course.  Two female white-tailed deer were spotted along the Kiawah Island Parkway, the two raccoons are still hanging out in an oak tree, and naturally the dozens of snowy egrets are roosting at the lagoon on Sea Marsh Drive.

March 2, 2005

As predicted, Kiawah was buffeted by very strong winds yesterday.  If you doubt it, just check the yards, paths, and streets.  They are covered in palm branches and leaves. It looks to be another blustery day here on the island.

Spring

March wind upon my face,

Nubby lambs, shamrock lace,

Dancing kites soaring high,

Bold sunlight in azure sky -

Ah, yes, now I remember...

Spring awakening the world.
