It is still a bit overcast on Kiawah this morning, but thankfully the rain that plagued us all day yesterday has ceased. For a while there it seemed that boats would be the only method of transportation that would work on the island!

Last chance to renew your business license at the Town Hall today!

It is 45 degrees at 9:20 this morning.  The high today should be in the upper fifties.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-forties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Three female white-tailed deer on Governor's Drive, eleven double-crested cormorants at Cougar Point golf course and four at Marsh Island Drive, one raccoon hanging out in an oak tree staying warm, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

February 25, 2005 Week-end Edition

It is overcast on Kiawah this morning, and a bit cooler than it has been recently.  There is a nice breeze too, so drag out your woolies if you plan to be outside for very long.

Last chance... to renew your business license.  Renewals are due by this coming Monday, so stop by the Town Hall and cross it off your To Do List!

Friday's temperatures will range from highs in the mid-fifties to a low near forty.  There is a 20% chance of rain during the day. Saturday's high should be in the mid-fifties, with a low in the mid-thirties during the night.  **PLANT WATCH ** The high on Sunday is supposed to have a 50% chance of rain, with a high near sixty and lows in the upper forties.  There is a 60% chance of showers Sunday night

Kiawah is gray and overcast this morning. Showers arrived last night and seem to be sticking around.  Not a good day for yard work, but perhaps for curling up with a good book.  What are you reading now?

Today's photo was taken on February 22nd by Bill Blizard.  Still no official news from the SCDNR on "our" eagles, but three were spotted at the nest Tuesday, so there is definitely an offspring again this year on Kiawah.  YEA!

Once again it is 59 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  The high today should be in the mid-sixties with a 70% chance of rain. Tonight's low is supposed to be in the upper forties, with the chance of showers reduced to 50%.

We have another lovely day on Kiawah today! The sunshine is in full force again today - what does that pesky groundhog in Pennsylvania know about winter anyway? It certainly seems that winter has already left our island.  Are you thinking spring yet?

Did you know? Tonight is the Full Snow Moon. Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, native tribes of the north and east most often called February's full Moon the Full Snow Moon. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult.

It is 59 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  Today's high is supposed to be in the mid-sixties. The low tonight should be in the lower fifties.

 February 22, 2005

Kiawah is bathed in sunshine despite torrential downpours for most of last night, complete with thunder and lightning. The sun in shining and the birds are singing vociferously.  They too are celebrating Mother Nature's gift of this premature "Spring Break".  Today looks to be a fabulous day for getting outside to play!

It is 57 degrees at 9:00 this morning.  The temperature today should be in the low seventies. Tonight's low is supposed to be in the low fifties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Three American alligators, two American robins,  one brown pelican, seven double-crested cormorants, two great blue herons in The Preserve, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

February 21, 2005

Kiawah is overcast this morning and covered in showers.  Yesterday's rain never arrived - apparently it was just delayed a bit.  It certainly appears that umbrellas will be the fashion accessory for today.

Today is President's Day and Love Your Pet day.  Have you hugged your pet?

It is 61 degrees at 10:00 this morning.  Today's high temperature is supposed to in the upper sixties with a 60% chance of showers.  The low tonight should be in the upper fifties with a 20% chance of rain.

February 18, 2005 Week-end Edition

It is colder on Kiawah Friday morning but still sunny and beautiful.  Rather fitting for "Pluto Day", the day the planet Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930.  Perhaps since it is so lovely outside (though a little chilly!) you will be out and about making some discoveries of your own?

Hang out at the Sandcastle... Facsimiles of paintings of English naturalist and artist Mark Catesby will be shown at the Sandcastle today and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. KICA member Dave Elliott is sharing this exhibit and will host a one-hour presentation about Catesby Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

It is 49 degrees at 10:30 Friday morning.  We should be on the way to a high in the mid-fifties.  The low is supposed to be in the mid-thirties.  Saturday's temperatures should be similar, with a high in the mid-fifties and a low near forty.  Highs in the upper fifties on Sunday will be accompanied by a 30% chance of showers.  The low Sunday night should be in the lower fifties, with a 50% chance of rain.

February 17, 2005

Kiawah is a bit cooler this morning than the past few mornings. But it still seems that we are through winter and headed full force towards spring.  Mother Nature may yet have some surprises in store for us, but hopefully not.

The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition begins this weekend.  It is an annual expo featuring original paintings, sculptures and carvings, photography, reproductions, wildlife crafts and collectibles, conservation exhibits, retriever demonstrations, a Sporting Classics sporting village and more. The other week-end festival is the Bonterra Lowcountry Blues Bash: another annual festival which offers more than 100 performances, most of them free!

It is 54 degrees at 10:10 this morning.  The temperature today is supposed to be in near sixty. Tonight's low should be in the mid-thirties.

February 16, 2005

Kiawah has more fog this morning. It is not quite as dense as yesterday, and should be gone fairly quickly.  We should have another warm day today, but colder weather is on it's way to the island.  Better get outside and play while you can!

Don't forget: You have two more chances today to get involved with Kiawah's comprehensive plan. The Town of Kiawah Island Planning Commission public “visioning” sessions on Kiawah's Comprehensive Plan are at 2 and 7 p.m. today. The public is invited to attend to review a draft of the updated plan, make comments about the listed issues and goals, and suggest additional issues and goals that should be included in the Plan before it is considered by the Planning Commission.

It is 55 degrees at 10:10 this morning.  Today's high should be in the mid-sixties. The low tonight is supposed to be in the mid-forties, with a 20% chance of showers.

February 15, 2005

A wee bit foggy this morning... It should blow off and leave us with a fairly warm day to explore the island though.  Kiawah is home to so many different species of plants and animals. From bobcats to cormorants, otters to deer, we have "critters" galore. We see wax myrtles and rattlebushes, live oaks and trumpet creepers, loblolly pines and sweet gums. What Kiawah plants and "critters" have you seen lately?

It is 55 degrees at 10:30 this morning.  The temperature today is supposed to be in the mid-fifties. Tonight's low should be in the lower fifties.

It is overcast this morning on Kiawah and showers are on the way.  But don't let that stop you from having a wonderful Valentine's Day!  Just grab that old umbrella and your sweetie and head out for a day of pampering.  If you don't have a sweetie, why not pamper yourself?  You deserve it!

It is 61 degrees at 10:00 this morning.  Today's high should be in the lower sixties with a 70% chance of rain. Tonight's low is supposed to be in the lower fifties with a 40% chance of showers.

Make your voice heard!  Head on down to the Town Hall this afternoon at 2 or this evening at 7 to review and comment upon Kiawah's updated Comprehensive Plan.  It has not been presented to the Planning Commission yet, so now is the time to put in your two cents' worth!  Now how often are you encouraged to do that?  The Planning Commission wants YOU!  (with apologies to Uncle Sam...)

We have another lovely sunny morning on  Kiawah this morning. Mother Nature must be giving us a Mardi Gras present! Lots of golfers were out yesterday taking advantage of this break in the weather to work on their game. Looks like today will be another chance to lower that golf score!

It is Fat Tuesday today, also known as Mardi Gras Day or Shrove Day. According to tradition, it is a day when people eat anything and everything they want as the following day is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of a long fasting period for Christians. Fat Tuesday is a celebration and the opportunity to enjoy that favorite food or snack that you give up for the long Lenten season.

Mark your calendars!  The Annual KICA Meeting will take place the week-end of March 19th.  In addition to the meeting on the 20th, there will be loads of activities for everyone - from a Celebrate Kiawah event at the Sandcastle to nature and bicycle tours.

Another flip flop... Kiawah is currently beautiful and sunny.

Happy Groundhog Day! Groundhog Day comes from Candlemas Day, observed for centuries in parts of Europe on February 2nd where the custom was to have the clergy bless candles and distribute them to the people. This seems to have derived from the pagan celebration of Imbolc, coming at the mid-point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. The Roman Legions, it is said, brought the tradition to the Germans.  "Punxsutawney Phil" up in Pennsylvania saw his shadow this morning, and predicted six more weeks of winter.

Kiawah was overcast earlier this morning, so our version of Punxsutawney Phil, "Kiawah Coon" did not see his shadow.  Guess this means that Kiawah will only have four more weeks of winter! J

It is 40 degrees at 9:15 this morning.  Today's temperature should reach fifty once again. This time it is also bringing a 30% chance of showers. The low tonight is supposed to be in the mid-forties with a 70% chance of rain.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Seven double-crested cormorants near Marsh Island Drive and at Cougar Point golf course, one great blue heron, five male and three female hooded mergansers in The Preserve, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

February 1, 2005

Flip flop... this morning Kiawah is gray and overcast.  When it is this cold out our brown pelicans certainly seem to spend a lot of time inside - the island! They are floating around by the dozens on the various lagoons and ponds. Guess the water at the beach is too cold for them too!

It is 40 degrees at 9:10 this morning.  The high today is supposed to be near fifty once again. Tonight's low should be in the low forties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two female white-tailed deer along Governor's Drive, one marsh hawk along the Kiawah Island Parkway, three double-crested cormorants near Marsh Island Drive, one great blue heron and three male hooded mergansers in The Preserve, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.
