December 31, 2004

Kiawah is overcast this morning, but still nice and warm.  Mother Nature seems to be cooperating for the New Year's celebrations taking place this evening! If you are headed out to celebrate, please drive safely.  If you would like to watch some of the New Year's celebrations, click here to visit a web cam site showing the crazy celebrations.

Hope you have a Happy New Year!  Here's hoping 2005 is a banner year for everyone.

It is 48 degrees at 9:30 this morning. Today's weather is almost a repeat of yesterday: highs in the mid-sixties, and in the upper forties tonight.  Saturday should also be in the mid-sixties during the day with temperatures near fifty during the night.  We should see more of the same on Sunday - mid-sixties in the daytime and upper forties that night.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count:

A flock of brown pelicans near the Beach Club, and one in Ibis Pond, two American robins, six double-crested cormorants at Cougar Point golf course, two raccoons on Marsh Island Drive, one great blue heron at The Preserve, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

December 29, 2004

Kiawah is bright and shiny this morning.  It is substantially warmer than it has been these past several mornings - it almost seems pleasant by comparison.  By this afternoon it should be warm enough to venture outside with no jacket or sweater.  Looks like it will be a terrific day to get outside and play!

It is 45 degrees at 9:30 this morning. The high today should be in the upper fifties. Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-forties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: A dozen brown pelicans flying along the beach and two floating on Ibis Pond, three yellow-rumped warblers, only five double-crested cormorants on one of the fairways at Cougar Point this time, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

December 28, 2004

Sunshine seems to be the order of the day on Kiawah.  The temperature is quite cold despite the sun though.  Leave those holiday sweaters out - you are going to need them today!

Lots of shells on the beach this morning - perhaps the rain from the week-end whipped up the surf enough to propel them to the surface?  Who knows?  But there are dozens of moon snails and clam shells scattered everywhere.

It is 34 degrees at 9:30 this morning. Today's temperature is supposed to be in the upper forties. The low tonight should be near forty.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Several yellow-rumped warblers on Sea Marsh Drive, four brown pelicans floating on various ponds, and eight double-crested cormorants on one of the fairways at Cougar Point, one raccoon on Marsh Island Drive, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

December 27, 2004

Kiawah is covered in sunshine this morning. It looks like the "recovery period" from the holidays this past week should at least appear to be pleasant!  It looks deceptively warm outside...but don't be fooled!  You will probably need some layers to keep warm!  Mother Nature is sending weather that is a wee bit warmer this afternoon.  Hopefully we should all be able to get outside and play in the sunshine.

It is 43 degrees at 11:15 this morning. The high today should be near fifty. Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-thirties.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count: One bobcat who ambled across the Kiawah Island Parkway on Christmas Day.  Perhaps it was Kiawah's way of wishing us a Merry Christmas? Three brown pelicans hanging out on Ibis Pond, four female white-tailed deer along Governor's Drive, three great blue herons, and eleven double-crested cormorants at various places, one raccoon on Marsh Island Drive, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

December 24, 2004 Week-end Edition

Mother Nature can't seem to decide whether Kiawah should be gray or sunny this morning. The sun appears to be playing hide-and-go-seek with the clouds, pushing through long enough to tantalize with a brief hint of warmth.

One last time... Tonight is the last chance this year to view the Ursids meteor shower.  Look North to see 15 to 25 medium speed meteors per hour all night long.  And maybe you will see a fat man in a red suit flying about as well?  With eight tiny reindeer?  If you can't find Santa with your very own eyes, you can always check the North American Air Defense Command web site.  Yes, believe it or not, there is an entire web site dedicated to "tracking" his progress across the globe as he delivers his toys!  Check it out...

Merry Christmas!  Or would that be merry kiss moose?  Here is hoping that your holiday is a  wonderful day filled with family, friends, laughter, peace, and joy.

It is 41 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's temperature is supposed to be near fifty, with tonight in the lower thirties.  Saturday's high should also be near fifty with lows in the mid-thirties during the night. Sunday's high is supposed to be in the lower fifties. Sunday night we should see lows near thirty.

December 23, 2004

Kiawah is gray and overcast this morning. Looks like we have ourselves a heat wave!  It is quite warm this morning here on Kiawah - nearly 70 degrees already. We are being treated to a little warmth, but will pay for it with thunderstorms or rain later this afternoon.

Did you know? The Ursids meteor shower will strut it's stuff tonight and tomorrow night.  If you head outside after dark and look to the North, you should see 15 to 25 medium speed meteors per hour all night long.  Enjoy!

It is 67 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's temperature is supposed to be in the upper sixties. There is a 70% chance of rain today, along with some gusty winds. The low tonight should be in the mid-forties.

December 22, 2004

This morning Kiawah is once again bathed in sunshine. It is already warmer today than yesterday!  Could it be that Mother Nature has decided to let us experience a few days of normal temperatures?

Today is a happy day for some folks.  As the winter solstice was yesterday, today officially marks the time when days begin to get longer again.  Each day we will see a few more minutes of daylight.

It is 51 degrees at 9:15 this morning. The high today should be in the mid-sixties. Tonight's low is supposed to be in the mid-fifties, with a 50% chance of showers.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Four female and one male white-tailed deer at various places along Governor's Drive, two great blue herons in the marsh just past The Preserve, four double-crested cormorants on Ibis Pond, and five on Egret Pond, one raccoon in an oak tree, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

December 21, 2004

Kiawah is covered in sunshine this morning. Luckily it should be warmer today, and the weather appears to be on its way back to normal for this time of year.

Web site visitor Ken Loderick had this response to the "cold weather" here on Kiawah:

"Greetings to my freezing South Carolina friends! 27 degrees this morning on Kiawah? I'll put together a list of good snow throwers and send it to you as it appears you're going to need one soon! Your northern friends are always willing to help! :-) I hope you have an enjoyable holiday season even if you don't get snow!"  Ken, thanks for reminding us that cold is a state of mind here on Kiawah! J

It is 38 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's temperature is supposed to be in the upper fifties. The low tonight should be in the mid-forties.

December 20, 2004

It is lovely and sunny on Kiawah this morning. The gale force winds that began yesterday afternoon have certainly wrought havoc.  The temperature started to drop Sunday evening, getting into the low twenties last night.  With apologies to our Northern cousins, it is COLD here today!

December 17, 2004 - Week-end Edition

Overcast skies rule Kiawah this morning. There have been a few brief rain drizzles, but nothing major.

It would seem that this week-end will be a very busy one, with some folks finishing up their holiday celebrations. Are you one?  Or perhaps you have finished and can now kick back and enjoy watching everyone else scurry around?

Did you know? 10:35 a.m. on the 17th is the anniversary of the first manned flight, undertaken by the Wright brothers in Kitty Hawk, N.C.

Today's temperature is supposed to be in the upper fifties with a 20% chance of light rain. The low tonight should near forty.  Saturday's high should be around sixty with lows near forty during the night.  The high on Sunday is supposed to be in the mid-fifties with a 20% chance of showers.  Sunday night we should see lows near thirty with a 20% chance of rain.  The temperature will begin to drop Sunday afternoon with a SLIGHT chance of flurries after midnight.

December 16, 2004

It is cool and sunny on Kiawah this morning.  Apparently it was so cold last night that it made the electrical lines brittle and they snapped this morning around 8:15 a.m.!  No electricity for the past 1 1/2 hours, so the web site gets a late start today.  OK, the snapping is a joke, but the lack of electricity is not.  It gets mighty cold inside when it is below forty outside!

It is 36 degrees at 9:45 this morning. The high today  should be near fifty.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the lower forties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One very cold raccoon in an oak tree, four female and one male white-tailed deer on Marsh Island Drive,  one great blue heron in the marsh just past The Preserve, six double-crested cormorants flying overhead, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

December 15, 2004

We have another sunlit morning on Kiawah this morning.  Yet it is quite cold for December on our little island!  The frost warning last night was very accurate, as plants left outside last night are wilted and drooping.   There should be another freeze tonight, so be prepared!

It is a mere 30 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Brrrrr! Today's temperature is supposed to be in the upper forties.  The low tonight should be in the upper twenties.

December 14, 2004

It is bright and beautiful on  Kiawah this morning - but C-O-L-D!  The sun should be around for most of the day, but all Kiawah critters, humans included, will be wearing something extra warm!

Tonight is your last chance to catch the Geminids meteor showers.  They are a medium speed shower with 50-100 meteors per hour.  The best viewing time is from 1 to 3 a.m.  So grab something REALLY warm to wear, get comfortable in the lawn chair, and gaze directly overhead to catch some of this meteor shower.

It is 39 degrees at 9:15 this morning. YIKES! The high today should be in the upper forties.  Tonight's low is supposed to be in the upper twenties. The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a freeze warning through Wednesday at 8:00 a.m.  ** PLANT WATCH **

December 10, 2004 - Week-end Edition

The storms predicted for Kiawah yesterday finally arrived early this morning.  7:30 a.m. saw a horrendous thunderstorm complete with lightning and house-rocking booms of thunder. Yikes!  After an hour or so it calmed down, and there are now just wee sprinkles left.

Don't forget:  This week-end's big event is the 27th annual running of the Kiawah Island Marathon and Half Marathon. The weather should be terrific for running (or watching!) a marathon.  If you aren't already running or volunteering, please come out and support the runners!  A friendly wave and a "Way to go!" are appreciated more than you know!

December 9, 2004

It is partly cloudy on Kiawah this morning, and once again we have been blessed with very warm weather.  All of this warmth has caused some very thick fog in our area though.  If you were out and about after dark yesterday you are already aware of this.  Thick blankets of fog covered most of the island.  Driving down Bohicket/Betsy Kerrison/Main Road was quite an adventure up until about the Big Pig.  Some drivers were even pulled off to the side of the road.

* Don't forget to vote! *

It is overcast on Kiawah again this morning.  That's no excuse for not getting to the fire station and casting your vote though!

Happy Hanukkah!

Hanukkah begins this evening at sundown.

Norm Shea of KICA provided today's photo.  This night heron doesn't hang out at Night Heron Park, it fishes at the spillway near the fire station on Flyway Drive.  It looks like an American Bittern, but Norm has seen many juvenile yellow-crowned night herons, and was nice enough to share this photo to help us all identify one.  Thanks Norm!

Kiawah is gray and overcast this morning.  Light sprinkles are traveling across the island, but the temperatures are fairly warm.  It's going to be a wet shopping day!

The first "official" holiday get-together of the season takes place this evening.  A ceremony to light the Kiawah Christmas tree will begin at 5:30 in the lobby at The Sanctuary.  Hope to see you there!

Dozens of brown pelicans were also around for the fishing Sunday, as well as two great blue herons, one American alligator at the Osprey Point golf course, seven double-crested cormorants in Egret Pond, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

December 3, 2004 - Week-end Edition

Once again we are lucky!  We have a fabulous sunny morning on Kiawah.  The temperature should be near 60 again today, good news for all the folks who are out and about fetching Christmas trees or getting a start on holiday shopping.

Today's photo is brought to you by Joe Zambito of Glossy Ibis.  Joe has been "playing" with his new camera, a Nikon D70 digital.  Remember, if you have photos to share, e-mail the webmaster.  And when it is posted, be sure to tell all your friends you are famous! J
