August 31, 2005

We have overcast skies and LOADS of humidity on Kiawah this morning. We did receive some brief showers yesterday, but nothing of note. Today looks to be much the same as yesterday, with a warm humid day in store, and showers at some point.

Island News: The roundabout is still being paved... keep your fingers crossed for good weather so they can finish it up soon!

Heat Index: We have another heat advisory in effect from noon until 8:00 p.m.  The heat index will once again be near 105.

A great blue heron spies lunch Today's photo is shared by Kelly Bragg. Kiawah's great blue herons seem to be a bit shy during the summer when the island is full of visitors.  But as the island empties of summer guests they should become easier to spot.

It is 82 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's temperatures should be in the upper eighties. The low tonight is supposed to be in the upper seventies. There is a 20% chance of rain both today and tonight.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One female ruby-throated hummingbird, one white-tailed deer, two five-lined skinks, four raccoons, one American alligator, several golden silk spiders, and dozens of snowy egrets.

August 30, 2005

Kiawah is mostly sunny this morning, and extremely humid. Our weather is a bit like a broken record these days... hot and humid, with a chance of showers.

Here we are at the end of August with island visitors leaving. Soon all that will remain is the warm weather and us!  Why is it that visitors are not around in September and October?  It is so beautiful on the island then, and there are not many folks here.  Guess it is the potential for hurricanes?

Island News: If you were out & about yesterday evening, you saw the crews working on paving the roundabout.  If the weather holds, paving should be completed this week. The contractors estimate that it will take about two nights to do it if there is good weather. Night commuters may be impacted once they get started.

Heat Index: We have another heat advisory in effect from noon until 8:00 p.m.  The heat index will be near 105 this afternoon.

It is 85 degrees at 9:10 this morning. The high today is supposed to be in the mid-eighties with a 50% chance of rain. Tonight's low should be in the upper seventies, with a 30% chance of showers.

August 29, 2005

Kiawah is sunny this morning! Everything is bright and beautiful today (with apologies to James Herriott for taking his title!).  We are extremely fortunate that Hurricane Katrina has missed our fair island.  After making landfall near Miami everyone hoped Katrina was done.  But as we all know these storms have minds of their own, and as Katrina crossed the Gulf, it increased in size and velocity, turning into a category 5 hurricane.  You can never be too careful when dealing with hurricanes.  We are all hoping the New Orleans area comes through this with as little damage as possible.

Island News: The roundabout should be paved this week. The contractors estimate that it will take about two nights to do it if there is good weather. Night commuters may be impacted once they get started.

Heat Index: Once again we have a heat advisory in effect from noon until 8:00 p.m.  The heat index will be between 100 and 105, so please be careful out there!

It is 82 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Today's high should be in the mid-eighties with a 20% chance of showers. The low tonight should be in the upper seventies, with a 40% chance of rain.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count: Spotted in various places around the island during the wee-end: one red-tailed hawk, two wood storks, two five-lined skinks, five white-tailed deer, five raccoons, four American alligators, several golden silk spiders, two osprey, and dozens of snowy egrets.

August 26, 2005 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is overcast and gray this morning, but it is cooler outside than it has been in weeks!  It sure feels nice to be able to go outside & not walk into a wet blanket...

Looks like Hurricane Katrina will be to the west of us later this week-end.  We will probably be on the receiving end of lots of showers.  Hopefully she will miss us this time around. Are you prepared in case of a hurricane? Click here to review the emergency preparedness plan from the TownOr click here to see the Hurricane page on the KICA web site.

Island News: The roundabout is nearly finished! You may have noticed the landscaping crews putting in trees and flowers recently.  It is looking good! The contractor is trying to complete the final paving this week. They estimate that it will take about two nights to do it. They are waiting on better weather  = no rain. Night commuters may be impacted once they get started.

It is 75 degrees at 9:05 Friday morning. Week-end weather: Friday's temperatures should range from a high in the mid-eighties with a 20% chance of showers, to a low in the mid-seventies with a 30% chance of rain.  The high Saturday is supposed to be in the mid-eighties.  The low should be in the mid-seventies, with a 50% chance of rain all day Saturday. Sunday is supposed to bring highs in the mid-eighties and lows in the mid-seventies, with a 60% chance of showers both Sunday during the day and evening.

August 25, 2005

Kiawah woke up to a storm this morning. The rain is pelting us quite fiercely and the palm fronds are getting scattered about the island. It has been raining for hours and doesn't look like it will cease anytime soon.  Better get out those umbrellas!

August 24, 2005

Kiawah is sunny this morning, and H-U-M-I-D!  Whew!  Steamy seems to be the order of the day again. August is certainly serving up some hot, humid weather - is it possible to recall July?

Kiawah is starting to get quieter.  Vacationers have headed home, the little ones have started school, and no one seems to have much energy.  Folks give the impression of being content to simply sit and rest.  Perhaps we are taking a brief breather before fall truly arrives?

August 23, 2005

This morning started out a wee bit overcast and gray.  But now the sun has shown itself, (shone itself? J) and it looks to be another lovely summer day on the island.

Since it is so pleasant today, it is time for another virtual excursion to one of Kiawah's natural wonders! In the past we have "visited" Marsh Island Park, the Marsh View Tower, Kildeer Pond, the Kiawah Swamp Garden, and the Sparrow Pond Nature Trail.  Today's excursion is the Rhett's Bluff Nature Area.  This is a wetland area that showcases many of Kiawah's native plants.  There is a raised boardwalk to stroll through the area.  Why not go visit and take a look for yourself?

Kiawah has 100% humidity this morning, and is sunny and warm.  Sultry would seem the word that best describes this morning...

Astronomy 101: The Full Sturgeon Moon is at 12:53 pm Friday. Fishing Indian tribes get credit for the naming this Moon, because sturgeon were most readily caught during this month. Some tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Kiawah is cloudy and less humid this morning.  That's not a big surprise after the massive thunderstorms we received for most of last night. There was quite a lightning show during the night lasting until early this morning.  Some electricity was knocked out as well, including the webmaster's!  Sorry for this morning's late posting, but Mother Nature won this battle.

Kiawah is sunny and still very humid this morning.  So once again we start our day with a giant dose of humidity.  Isn't it humility we are supposed to have in abundance? J Quick! Someone contact the letter police.  Our "l" has been stolen and replaced with a "d"!

Today should be a good day to test out the ocean waters, or better still, the pool.  Hot and steamy is the perfect excuse for some soothing cool water. Or perhaps a large serving of something C-O-L-D?

This week is your last opportunity to donate school supplies. Click here for information.

Kiawah is a bit gray and overcast this morning. Looks like a dreary, humid day is in store for us.

Last night the lightning bugs were all over the place!  Their wee tails were blinking like mad, which, according to folk wisdom, means hot & humid weather ahead.  They were certainly correct for today!  Were these insects called lightning bugs or fireflies when you were growing up?

Kiawah is bright and sunny this morning. It looks like it will be a good day to go exploring, or to take in some of Kiawah's outdoor treasures.

Did you know?  Kiawah is home to many species of snakes.  You can find them in all parts of the island: the dunes, the maritime forest, the beach, the surf, the ponds, the marsh, and swampy areas. About half of South Carolina's 30 species of snakes can be found here.  The Town of Kiawah Island has a very informative brochure describing some of Kiawah's snakes.  It is free, and is available at the Visitor's Center at the Town Hall.

We are already up to "Irene" in the named storms category.  Though we are up to the letter "I", the storms have stayed away thus far.  Let us hope this trend continues!

August 5, 2005 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is a bit overcast and gray this morning.  It is very humid as well, giving new meaning to the term “dog days of summer”. Of course, "dog days of summer" actually has meaning beyond just "It's so hot I'm panting".  According to the Farmers' Almanac, the dog days of summer are the period between July 3 and August 11. It's during this time that the sun occupies the same region of the sky as Sirius, the Dog Star. It was once believed that due to the star's position at this time of year that it somehow conspired with the sun to make the days hotter. Many people also believed that the hot days of the summer caused dogs to go mad, thus the name.

Kiawah is gorgeous and sunny this morning. It looks like a fabulous day to go outside and play! The beach would be nice, the pools, bicycling, roller blading... the possibilities are endless!

A good place to visit... Kiawah has several areas set aside with nature trails, some with ponds, some with observation towers, and some with boardwalks.  One such area is the Sparrow Pond Nature Trail.  It is located along Sparrow Pond and Duneside Cottages.  As you walk or bicycle the paths, you will see a natural pond and vegetated island.  Native plants and animals are there for your viewing pleasure as well!  Have you visited Sparrow Pond Nature Trail?
