April 29, 2005  Week-end Edition

Lots of fluffy white clouds are drifting through Kiawah skies this Friday morning.  It is another lovely spring day on Kiawah!  Last night it was very cool outside - excellent "sleeping weather".  Did you have any difficulties getting up this morning?

A Kiawah native plant - cross vine  Bill Blizard shares this photo of cross vine.  Look for it twining through tree tops and branches all over the island.

Kiawah is sunny this morning, with a nice gentle breeze. It should be warm and sunny today, the perfect day to be outside.  Speaking of which, have you visited The Preserve lately?  Kildeer Pond and the Nature Trail are quite beautiful.  Take a little trip over and walk on the trails.  There are birds galore on Kildeer Pond, and you may even be fortunate enough to see a wood stork or if you are VERY quiet, even a bobcat!  A marsh tower is tucked away in a little corner, and it has fabulous views of the marsh.  Are you adventurous enough to go find it?

It is 59 degrees at 9:10 this morning. The high today is supposed to be in the upper sixties.  Tonight's low should be in the mid-fifties.

It is a beautiful spring day on Kiawah. The April showers of yesterday have passed, leaving warm sunshine and soft breezes.  Will you be able to get outside today to enjoy it?

Island News: Another store opens in Freshfields today.  Newton Farms will be open for business.

There was quite a discussion on the KICA e-mail list yesterday about potential nicknames for the store.  In the past we had the Big Pig & the Little Pig.  With the Little Pig closing yesterday, there is apparently a void.  Suggestions given were: Posh Pig, Gourmet Pig, Pig Newton... Generally the list has more serious and helpful information, such as good painters, insurance agencies and so on.  If you would like to join the list, visit the KICA web site for information.

It is 64 degrees at 9:20 this morning. Today's temperature should range from a high in the mid-seventies to a low tonight near fifty.

Looks like sunshine will be the order of the day on Kiawah today! It is a bit chilly this morning at a brisk 51 degrees. The wind that whipped across the island all week-end has brought us cooler temperatures, and looks to be sticking around for a while. Kite flying anyone?

If you had a chance to take in either of the two Arts Council sponsored events this week-end you experienced a treat!  The CSO Gospel Choir performed Friday night to an audience of nearly 800 appreciative folks.  And the Brass Quintet yesterday evening was also well-received.  Thanks to the Town of Kiawah Island Arts Council for putting these events together!

Don't Forget: Today is the final day to register for Cocktails at the 'Castle! Payment. See our Something Fun To Do Today section for details.

Astronomy 101: The Lyrids meteor shower is coming to town!  It is a relatively small shower, with about 20 meteors per hour. Optimum viewing will be between 2 and 4 a.m. Find a place with a clear view of the sky and grab a chair or blanket.

Sunday is the Full Pink Moon. The name came from wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names for this month's moon include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.

Kiawah is gorgeous and sunny this morning, and covered in...oak tags!  Yep, it is that time of year again.  We have rid ourselves of most of the fallen oak leaves, so now 'tis the season for tags!  The live oaks are sending their small  "tags" our way.  No more fallen leaves everywhere, now we are dusted with brown oak tags.  Good thing it is so lovely outside, as there is plenty of yard work to be done...again! J

The owl population on the island has plenty to say these days!  If you listen in the evenings, you can hear them as they call to one another.  "Whooooooo" a Great Horned Owl exclaims to its pals across the marsh.  Our other common owl, the Eastern Screech owl, has more of a wail when it "speaks".  Kiawah is also home to the Barred Owl.  This owl is easily heard as well, with its "Whoo, hoo, hoo-hoo" calls.  Have you heard any owls on Kiawah lately?
