November 30, 2009

Kiawah is sunny and fairly warm this morning. This is a day that makes you realize what it is that you so love about Kiawah! Could it be residual gratitude or appreciation from Thanksgiving? Perhaps. But then again, it could be that a gorgeous sunny day at the end of November is simply wonderful! A day where you can wear shorts (!) outside while playing with your family and friends, can just make you glad to be alive. Enjoy your day!

Weather: It is 51 degrees at 9:05 this morning. Clear skies are the order of the day today!  Highs near seventy today.  Lows tonight near fifty with a 20% chance of showers.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count  Spotted at various times & places around Kiawah during the week-end: Two golden silk spiders, two ladder-backed woodpeckers, one belted kingfisher, one red-tailed hawk, one raccoon, several brown pelicans, five female and one male white-tailed deer, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

November 27, 2009 Week-end Edition

What is that in the sky today?  Is it a bird?  Is it a plane?  IT IS THE SUN! It is sunny on Kiawah this morning, though it is quite chilly.  Still, it is a fair guess that everyone is quite happy to see some sunshine after all the recent overcast days. Hope all you happy pilgrims have the chance to play outside and today to work off that huge dinner!

Woodpecker on tree Kathy Heikes captured this woodpecker dining on insects one bright sunny day.

Week-end Weather: It is 44 degrees at 9:05 Friday morning. Nothing but sun is in the forecast today and throughout the week-end!  Highs Friday in the mid-fifties, lows near forty.  Saturday's high should be in the low sixties, the low in the mid-forties.  Look for upper sixties as the high on Sunday, with lows in the upper forties.

November 26, 2009

Kiawah is mostly cloudy this morning, but the sun has FINALLY broken through the clouds!  Yet another thing to be thankful for on this wonderful day.

Happy Thanksgiving!

A THANKSGIVING POEM

'Twas the night of Thanksgiving,

But I just couldn't sleep

I tried counting backwards,

I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned -

The dark meat and white

But I fought the temptation

With all of my might.

Tossing and turning

With anticipation

The thought of a snack

Became infatuation.

So, I raced to the kitchen,

Flung open the door

And gazed at the fridge,

Full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey

And buttered potatoes,

Pickles and carrots,

Beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling

So plump and so round,

'Til all of a sudden,

I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling,

Floating into the sky

With a mouthful of pudding

And a handful of pie.

But, I managed to yell

As I soared past the trees....

Happy eating to all -

Pass the cranberries, please.

May your stuffing be tasty,

May your turkey be plump.

May your potatoes 'n gravy

Have nary a lump.

May your yams be delicious

May your pies take the prize,

May your Thanksgiving dinner

Stay off of your thighs.

May your Thanksgiving be blessed!

Today's Kiawah Critter Count  Two golden silk spiders, one yellow-bellied sapsucker, one raccoon, several brown pelicans, two female and one male white-tailed deer, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive. Still suspiciously absent: our resident wild turkey! Probably still in hiding...

Weather: It is 49 chilly degrees at 9:00 this morning. There is fog this morning as well, but it should burn off shortly, leaving us a nice warm day.  Highs near seventy today, lows in the low forties.  Brrr...

November 25, 2009

It is still overcast on Kiawah this morning, complete with a light drizzle.  Where did the sun go?

Your Thanksgiving forecast...

Turkey Dinner: Turkeys will thaw in the morning, then warm in the oven to an afternoon high near 190F. The kitchen will turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be ready for a severe squall or cold shoulder.

Steaming Turkey: During the late afternoon and evening, the cold front of a knife will slice through the turkey, causing an accumulation of one to two inches on plates. Mashed potatoes will drift across one side while cranberry sauce creates slippery spots on the other. Please pass the gravy.

Bright Sun: A weight watch and indigestion warning have been issued for the entire area, with increased stuffiness around the beltway. During the evening, the turkey will diminish and taper off to leftovers, dropping to a low of 34F in the refrigerator.

Dark Cloud: Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, high pressure to eat sandwiches will be established. Flurries of leftovers can be expected both days with a 50 percent chance of scattered soup late in the day. We expect a warming trend where soup develops.

By early next week, eating pressure will be low as the only wish left will be the bone!

Weather: It is 54 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Where is the sunshine the weather folks promised?  Highs today near sixty with a 90% chance of rain. Lows tonight near fifty with a 20% chance.

Kiawah is overcast this morning, but it is supposed to be partly sunny this afternoon.  Here's hoping...

Folks are arriving on the island for the holidays, and are hitting the bike paths, the links, and the courts too. Please be careful driving, as there are far more people here now than for most of the fall.

Weather: It is 54 degrees at 9:15 this morning. The clouds are still hanging around the island, but at least it is warm! Highs in the low sixties, lows in the low fifties with a 20% chance of rain.

November 23, 2009

It is overcast on Kiawah this morning, and once again we have a fog blanket over the island. Birds and squirrels are flying and jumping about, singing or squawking happily. No doubt they are getting ready for Thanksgiving, much like the rest of us!

Thanksgiving week is typically a busy one on Kiawah, with lots of property owners here for the holiday. It seems every year there are more and more visitors here as well. Perhaps Kiawah brings out the thankfulness in people? The stores will be running out of Thanksgiving staples soon... Need Cool Whip for your pumpkin pie? - better get over there quickly!

Weather: It is 58 degrees at 9:00 this morning. We seem to be looking at a cool day with a slight chance of showers. Highs today in the low sixties with a 20% chance of rain. Lows tonight near fifty.

Kiawah is warm but overcast this morning, and blanketed with fog. It shrouds the oak trees, giving the Spanish moss an eerie look.  Visibility is low, so please be careful if you are driving!

Waking up this morning was a real treat, with not one, but TWO pileated woodpeckers just outside the window.  There is no mistaking their rat-a-tat-tat as they search for their bug breakfast. Have you ever seen a pileated woodpecker?

Another amazing Kiawah sunset... One more fabulous sunset for your viewing pleasure, this one captured by Linda Sample.

November 2, 2009

Kiawah is overcast and cool this morning.  Can you believe that November is here already?  We have reached November safely, and can now celebrate the official end of hurricane season!  This year we were fortunate, receiving nothing even remotely resembling a hurricane.  Yea!

Astronomy 101: We have two astronomical events today: the South Taurids meteor showers and the Full Beaver Moon.

The South Taurids meteor shower will be visible tonight,  tomorrow, and Wednesday.  Naturally the meteors are best viewed in the "early morning hours" (translate that to between 1:00 & 3:00 a.m.).  So grab a lawn chair, face south, and start watching! If there are no clouds, you should be able to see 10 to 20 bright, but very slow, meteors per hour.

The full moon is named the Full Beaver Moon because this was when Indians set beaver traps before the swamps froze, ensuring a supply of warm winter furs. Another version suggests that the name comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter. It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon.

Weather: It is 56 degrees at 9:05 this morning. Watch out for weather that is MUCH cooler today! Highs in the low sixties, lows near fifty tonight.
