It is sunny and cool on Kiawah this morning.  The island is looking lovely this morning, despite being covered in yellow! Oh yes, another sign that spring has arrived - the pollen is ubiquitous. Anything outside is immediately covered with the stuff, and if you leave your windows open to enjoy the weather...look out! Your furniture will be covered with it too!

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning. Doesn't this look like a good day to be outside in search of spring?

A Recipe for Spring

Take half a dozen robins, some bluebirds, at least one gallant mockingbird to sing outside your door; a carpet of green velvet, with patterned flowers gay; the graceful fronds of willows that swing and dip and sway; some glowing green of maples, a bit of dogwood’s white, the purple-pink of redbud from dawn-time’s glowing light; the rippling of a brooklet, the splendor of the sky, the haunting scent of lilac, some fleecy clouds on high; a breeze to whisper softly in your ear, things that only you can hear.

And if you’ll stir them gently, and mold them in your heart, until the sight and sound of them is of yourself a part, you’ll have the sweetest springtime that ever you have known; though everyone may share it, it still will be your own.

- From Farmers’ Almanac, Vol. 157 (1974)

One sign of spring that is certainly not lacking on Kiawah these days is... pollen! Anything that sits outside for longer than an hour is covered by a fine mist of yellow dust. Cars, leaves, potted plants - nothing is exempt!

Weather: It is 48 degrees at 9:10 this morning. Thankfully the temperature is headed in the right direction though, so we should see warm temperatures later today.  Highs in the mid-sixties, lows in the low fifties.

Kiawah is a bit overcast this morning, but at least it's warm! This is the time of year when our lovely live oaks become the scourge of gardens - and gardeners! March's "lion" winds have scattered the dead leaves everywhere. And except for an hour or two when the yard looks nice, raking does not do much good! The leaves just seem to keep coming down. On the other hand, the Bradford pear trees certainly look beautiful with their white blossoms bursting out all over.

Weather: It is 55 degrees at 9:10 this morning. Expect clouds and a slight chance of showers later tonight.  Highs near seventy today. Lows tonight in the low fifties with a 20% chance of rain.

It is sunny on Kiawah this morning, with a chill in the air. Despite the chill, spring cannot be far away, can it? Spring plants are beginning to "strut their stuff", with daffodils popping up everywhere. The sweet grass is starting to show signs of growing longer as well. Soon Kiawah will be covered with signs of spring. What newly sprouted greenery have you spotted lately?

It is sunny on Kiawah again this morning.  We have another splendid day on the way, with warm temperatures and lots of sunshine.  Will you be outside to play today?

Astronomy 101: As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. Hence the name, Full Worm Moon. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter.

Weather: It is 59 degrees at 9:10 this morning. Highs in the seventies the next couple of days, before dropping back to the sixties. Look for a high near seventy today, with a low in the  upper fifties tonight.
