It is partly cloudy on Kiawah this morning, but the sun is doing its best to peek through the clouds. Today is a day that makes you realize what it is that you so love about Kiawah! Could it be residual gratitude or appreciation from Thanksgiving? It could be. But then again, it could be that a gorgeous sunny day in December is simply wonderful! A day where you can wear shorts (!) outside while playing with your family and friends, can just make you glad to be alive. Enjoy your day!

December 12, 2008 Week-end Edition

It is sunny and breezy on Kiawah this morning.  Oh, and did we mention that it is chilly too? Last night's strong winds ushered in nearly a 25 degree drop in temperature.  Yikes!  So though it is nice & sunny, it isn't exactly toasty outside.  Which do you prefer; warm & rainy or cold & sunny?

Astronomy 101:  Friday night is the Full Cold Moon; or the Full Long Nights Moon. During December the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule. The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun.

More Astronomy... The Geminids meteor shower will be around Saturday and Sunday night. As always, the meteors are best viewed in the "early morning hours" (translate that to between 1:00 & 3:00 a.m.). So grab a lawn chair and a really warm blanket, look directly overhead, and start watching! You should be able to see 50 to 100 medium speed meteors per hour.  Since the full moon is Friday night, there will be bright moonlight during the shower, which can considerably cut into the potential number of meteors that can be seen - it may obliterate all but the very brightest of meteors.

White-tailed deer This buck is a frequent visitor at Kathy's house, usually showing up around dinnertime. Guess Kathy must be a good cook!

Week-end Weather: It is 47 degrees at 9:00 Friday morning. We should see temperatures in the fifties for most of the week-end, warming to the low sixties on Sunday.  Highs Friday in the mid-fifties, lows in the upper thirties. Saturday is supposed to have a high in the mid-fifties and lows in the mid-forties.  Sunday's high should be in the low sixties, the low in the low fifties.  There is a 20% chance of rain for most of Sunday.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count  One anhinga, two great blue herons, three Carolina chickadees, two double-crested cormorants, one male and two female white-tailed deer, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

December 11, 2008

Kiawah is overcast this morning, and it is currently raining. The warm weather is sticking around - at least into this afternoon.  But the rain is too, so keep your umbrella handy!  If you are headed out, be sure to take a coat too, since the temperatures will drop into the forties by tonight.  Brrrrr...

Weather: It is 70 degrees at 9:10 this morning. The temperature is supposed to drop this afternoon, so look for temperatures in the sixties then.  Highs in the low seventies with a 100% chance of showers.  Tonight's low should be in the mid-forties with a 70% chance of rain.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count  One great blue heron, one American alligator, two double-crested cormorants, one female white-tailed deer, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

December 10, 2008

It is cloudy on Kiawah this morning, and once again far warmer than yesterday morning. If you step outside you will feel spring-like temperatures!  This warmth comes with a price though - there is nearly a 100% chance of showers late today.  Still, who isn't happy with some nice warm weather this time of year?

Weather: It is 68 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Watch for thundershowers later...  Today's high should be in the low seventies with a 30% chance of rain.  Lows tonight are supposed to be in the low sixties with a 90% chance of showers.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count  Three bottle-nosed dolphins, one great blue heron, two American alligators, two double-crested cormorants, two male and one female white-tailed deer, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

December 9, 2008

Kiawah is overcast this morning, but for some odd reason it is quite warm outside. Could this weather be any more bizarre?  It is a full 20 degrees warmer this morning than yesterday - now THIS is more like it!

After the thousands of runners who were here over the week-end to do the Kiawah Marathon, things should seem very quiet this week.
