January 31, 2011

Kiawah is drizzly but warm this morning.  January comes to a close with showers and reasonably warm temperatures.  While we may all wish for sunshine too, Fifty degree temperatures in January isn't too bad, is it?

Weather: It is 54 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Looks like another overcast day in the neighborhood... Highs in the upper fifties with a 50% chance of rain.  Lows tonight in the mid-forties.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count Spotted at various times and places around Kiawah during the week-end: One bobcat, one ladder-backed woodpecker, a few ibis, several hooded mergansers, several double-crested cormorants, three male and two female white-tailed deer, four great blue herons, three black vultures, one raccoon on Marsh Island Drive, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

January 28, 2011 Week-end Edition

It is not quite as cold outside this morning as yesterday, but almost!  Today should be a bit nicer, with sunshine and sixty degree temperatures. If you bundle up you might be able to get in a nice bike ride.  But then again, maybe you are a burrower when it is cold outside?  Either way, have a pleasant day!

Week-end Weather: It is 42 degrees at 8:45 Friday morning. The week-end should be fabulous, with temperatures in the low sixties throughout!  Highs Friday are supposed to be in the low sixties, with lows in the low forties.  Saturday should bring highs in the mid-sixties, and lows in the mid-forties.  Last but not least, look for highs in the mid-sixties again on Sunday.  Lows are supposed to be in the mid-forties with a 20% chance of showers.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count One bobcat on Governor's Drive, one ibis, several hooded mergansers, six double-crested cormorants on Egret Pond, five female white-tailed deer and three great blue herons at various places, one raccoon on Marsh Island Drive, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

January 27, 2011

The sun is back!  It is nice and sunny on Kiawah this morning, though much colder than recent mornings. A nearly 20 degree drop in temperature makes for a slow start to the morning, doesn't it?  Still, most of us can take a little cold as long as we also get some sunshine!

Weather: It is 39 degrees at 9:05 this morning. Is anyone tired of all the gray skies?  Highs today should be in the mid-fifties. Lows tonight in the upper thirties. 

Today's Kiawah Critter Count One anole, two male white-tailed deer, several hooded mergansers, a few double-crested cormorants, a few tufted titmice, several brown pelicans, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

January 26, 2011

Kiawah is overcast and damp this morning. It appears that our sunshine has come to an end today. The current temperature is in the mid-fifties and should be the high for the day. The cold front moving into our area will drop the temperatures substantially, to near freezing by tonight. Brrrrr!

Weather: It is 56 degrees at 9:10 this morning. Is anyone tired of all the gray skies?  Highs today should be in the upper fifties, with a 20% chance of rain. Lows tonight in the mid-thirties.

Did the sun get tired of beautiful Kiawah?  It has certainly departed, leaving gray skies and clouds in its wake.  We are supposed to be on the receiving end of heavy thundershowers later today, so take your umbrella wherever you go!

Weather: It is 48 degrees at 9:05 this morning. Looks like we will have a rainy day on Kiawah today! Highs in the upper fifties, lows in the low fifties. There is nearly a 100% chance of showers throughout the day and evening.

January 24, 2011

Kiawah is bathed in sunshine this morning, but it is pretty chilly out there! Although Kiawah is cold this morning, we should see warmer temperatures later today. Yippee! Lots of folks will be out and about enjoying the weather.  The golf courses and tennis courts will be burgeoning with players. 

Weather: It is 37 degrees at 9:10 this morning. Today should be a pleasant day all around.  Highs today in the low fifties. Lows tonight in the mid-forties with a 20% chance of rain.

January 21, 2011 Week-end Edition

It is gray and overcast on Kiawah this morning, but at least the drizzles have ceased.  Our week-end is supposed to start out fairly warm, but the nights certainly will be chilly!  Whatever happens with Mother Nature, here's hoping you have a fabulous week-end!

Shells on the Beach Jay found this gem near the Sandcastle recently.  Welcome to 2011, beach style!

Week-end Weather: It is 46 degrees at 8:45 Friday morning. Looks like our week-end will be a bit of a mixed bag as far as temperatures go. Highs Friday in the mid-fifties. Lows tonight in the low thirties.  Saturday's high is supposed to be near fifty, with lows near thirty.  We should see highs in the low fifties Sunday, with lows in the mid-thirties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count  One tri-colored heron, one great blue heron, one male white-tailed deer and one almost completely white smaller deer, a few hooded mergansers, one double-crested cormorant, a few tufted titmice, several brown pelicans, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

Kiawah is bathed in sunshine this morning.  Rain may be headed our way late this evening, but for now we have sunny skies and warm sunshine.  Tennis anyone? Or golf? Biking? 

Weather: It is 40 degrees at 9:15 this morning. The sun is out in full force this morning, and critters and people alike seem very happy with that development! Highs in the low sixties today. Lows tonight in the mid-forties with a 50% chance of rain.

It is partly sunny on Kiawah this morning - finally! After several gray days in a row, a little sunshine is most welcome, don't you think?

Astronomy 101 The Full Wolf Moon is tonight.  This moon is named because wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter. Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Some called it the Full Snow Moon, but most tribes applied that name to the next Moon.

Weather: It is 47 degrees at 9:15 this morning. We should see sunshine AND warmer temperatures today.  YEA! Highs in the low sixties, lows in the low forties.

Kiawah awoke to rain and gray skies this morning, as showers work their way towards the coast.  It doesn't look like too many golf or tennis games will take place today.  Are you prepared to stay inside with a good book?

Weather: It is 46 degrees at 9:15 this morning. Despite the low chance predicted, it certainly seems like we will receive more rain today. Highs in the mid-fifties, lows in the upper forties. There is a 30% chance of rain predicted throughout the day and evening.

It is overcast on Kiawah this morning, but quite a bit warmer than recent mornings.  Perhaps we had better all dig out our umbrellas, just in case!

Weather: It is 42 degrees at 9:15 this morning. It looks like rain today... Highs near sixty, with a 90% chance of showers.  Lows tonight in the mid-forties with a 100% chance of rain.

January 14, 2011  Week-end Edition

Kiawah is sunny this morning.  Apologies to our Northern readers who no doubt think we are nuts, but it is COLD outside! Twenty degrees is just not what we expect on Kiawah!

Hooded Mergansers Kiawah's ponds are home for many "hoodies" this time of year.  This photo has three males (with the white and black caps) and two females (who are all brown).

Week-end Weather: It is 20 degrees at 8:45 Friday morning. Despite the frigid beginning, the week-end should be warmer than recent days. Hooray! Highs Friday near fifty, lows in the low thirties.  Saturday's high should be in the mid-fifties, with lows in the mid-thirties.  Last but not least, look for highs near sixty on Sunday, with lows in the mid-thirties.

Once again we have lovely sunshine on Kiawah this morning. The sunrise was beautiful - there was a variety of pinks and pale oranges draped across the horizon. Kiawah is fortunate to have some of the most wonderful sunrises and sunsets...have you treated yourself to one lately?

Island News: The Town of Kiawah Island reports that due to road ice, Suburban Disposal' s trucks did not run Monday. All trash will have a one day delay this week.

Weather: It is 29 degrees at 9:10 this morning. Does anyone else think our morning temperatures are headed in the wrong direction? Highs today in the mid-forties, lows tonight near thirty.

What's that up in the sky? It's a bird! It's a plane! IT IS THE SUN! Kiawah is sunny this morning - finally.  After several dreary days, the sun has at long last shown itself.  Or would that be shone?  Either way, we are all certainly happy to see it!

Island News: The Town of Kiawah Island reports that due to road ice, Suburban Disposal' s trucks did not run Monday. All trash will have a one day delay this week.

Weather: It is 33 degrees at 9:10 this morning. It is nice and sunny today, but don't be fooled into thinking it is warm! Highs in the low forties today, lows near thirty tonight.

Kiawah is overcast and chilly this morning.  We continue to have winter weather advisories, but today's is over at 11:00 a.m.. thank goodness!  It won't exactly be warm outside today, so keep the woolies handy.

Island News: The Town of Kiawah Island reports that due to road ice, Suburban Disposal' s trucks did not run Monday. All trash will have a one day delay this week.

Weather: It is 34 degrees at 9:10 this morning. It seems January is determined to be cold and gray. Highs in the low forties today, lows in the low thirties tonight. 

Today's Kiawah Critter Count One great blue heron, a few double-crested cormorants, several brown pelicans hanging out on interior ponds, one male white-tailed deer, a fraternity party of hooded mergansers (all males apparently, hanging out at Osprey Point), and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive. 

January 10, 2011

There is a light rain on Kiawah this morning. Overcast and rainy will be today's calling card, complete with a winter storm warning that remains in effect until 5:00 p.m. this afternoon.  Hope you have something planned indoors today, as being outdoors won't be very enjoyable!

Island News: The Town of Kiawah Island reports that due to road ice, Suburban Disposal' s trucks will not be running today. All trash will have a one day delay.

Weather: It is 32 degrees at 9:10 this morning. While our week-end was rain-free, today won't be - ick.  The high today is supposed to be near forty, lows tonight in the upper thirties.  There is a 100% chance of rain throughout both today and tonight.

January 7, 2011 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is sunny this morning, but it is quite chilly outside. So we have lost our gray skies and gained sunshine - but there is still plenty of cold to go around!  The island awoke to temperatures just barely over the freezing mark this morning.  Anyone up, out, and about early this morning no doubt had to scrape their windshield.  Now that's cold for us down South!

Kiawah is mostly sunny this morning. Rain looks to be headed our way, so it doesn't look like too many golf or tennis games will take place this afternoon.  Better head outdoors now if you plan to play outside today! 

Did you know? Today is National Bird Day!  This day is to celebrate the beautiful and diverse winged creatures of our world.

Weather: It is 44 degrees at 9:05 this morning. The question for the day seems to be not if, but when, will the rain arrive? Highs today in the low fifties with a 90% chance of showers. Lows tonight in the low forties with a 60% chance of rain.

It is mostly sunny on Kiawah this morning.  It is beautiful out there! It is a bit chilly when you walk outside, but you could easily do your morning walk in a sweatshirt. Isn't this why we all love living in South Carolina? Who says it is winter?

Weather: It is 40 degrees at 9:10 this morning. Today should be yet another fabulous day on our little barrier island. Highs near sixty today, lows in the upper thirties tonight.

Kiawah is sunny and cool this morning. Our temperature is supposed to reach the mid-fifties today, so it should be another terrific day for enjoying the outdoors.
