Kiawah is overcast but warm this morning. But we still have much warmer weather than February normally brings, so perhaps the slate-colored sky is a good trade-off?

While we may all clamor for spring, some birds believe it is already here! During the past few days, the island has been filled with robins and yellow-rumped warblers.  Have you seen signs of spring yet?

Weather: It is 64 degrees at 9:10 this morning. We can expect a windy day today, with gusts up to 25 miles per hour later this afternoon. Highs in the mid-seventies today, lows in the mid-fifties tonight. There is a 70% chance of showers this evening.

Alligator Springtime brings Kiawah's alligators back from the cold waters of our lagoons and ponds, back to sunning on the banks.

While the birds migrating through do not play tennis or golf (at least there have been no reports of such!), they are certainly enjoying the warmer temperatures. Have you looked up into the trees or the sky recently? If so, you have probably seen masses of birds perched or flying across the the heavens. February 18, 2011  Week-end Edition

Kiawah is magnificent, warm, and sunny this morning. After the past couple of days, one might wonder if this so called winter has any teeth remaining.  Yet here we are embarking on a week-end that will be filled with sunshine and warm gentle breezes.  Borrowing from a commercial, does it get any better than this?

Howl at the Moon! Friday night is the Full Snow Moon, so named by native tribes of the north and east because the heaviest snow usually falls during this month. Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult.

Blood Drive: The local Red Cross needs the commitment of 30 persons in order to hold a blood drive on Johns Island in March or April. We hope you will be one of the thirty. Local blood supplies are low, so your help is crucial.  The Red Cross requires that at least 30 persons pledge in advance that they are signing up to donate blood. We need your help in reaching the 30-person minimum. Without your commitment, the blood drive can not be scheduled.  Once scheduled, donors can reserve a specific time on the Saturday selected to come in for the 30 to 45 minute donation visit. The event will be held at Berkeley Electric Cooperative on Maybank Highway, Johns Island.  To pledge your commitment to donate, please contact Chris Brooks at chrislbrooks11@gmail.com. He will need your name, address, and phone number.  Thank you in advance for your support of the greater community!

Kiawah is a bit drizzly and gray this morning.

Happy Groundhog Day! Groundhog Day comes from Candlemas Day, observed for centuries in parts of Europe on February 2nd where the custom was to have the clergy bless candles and distribute them to the people. This seems to have derived from the pagan celebration of Imbolc, coming at the mid-point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. The Roman Legions, it is said, brought the tradition to the Germans.  "Punxsutawney Phil" up in Pennsylvania saw his shadow this morning, and predicted six more weeks of winter.

Kiawah is overcast again this morning, so our version of Punxsutawney Phil, "Kiawah Raccoon" did not see his shadow. Guess this means that Kiawah will only have four more weeks of winter!
