Kiawah is luminous and lovely this morning. The island has dressed in its best, and once again it is warm and sunny! We are sharing Kiawah with lots of folks these days. People are streaming onto the island to enjoy this fabulous weather - or is it because spring break is finally here?

Weather: It is 53 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Lookout for another amazing spring day today... Highs near seventy, lows in the low fifties.

It is sunny and cool on Kiawah this morning.  Thankfully the overcast skies and drizzle are nowhere in sight!  Today should be one of those picture perfect spring days that we all wish we could keep forever.  Here's a suggestion: take a good look around, a deep breath, and a mental snapshot.  Then tuck the memory away for a rainy day!

Weather: It is 54 degrees at 9:00 this morning. It certainly looks like a perfect spring day! Highs in the low seventies, lows near fifty.

March 29, 2010

Kiawah is gray and damp this morning.  Last night's storm wreaked havoc on the landscape - there are oak leaves everywhere...and branches...and palm fronds...and...you get the idea. The bright side is that perhaps the wind and rain will strip all the oak leaves off and we can begin to get things in order for spring.

The spring plantings are beginning to "strut their stuff", with daffodils popping up here and there. The sweet grass is starting to grow longer too. Soon Kiawah will be covered with signs of spring. What newly sprouted greenery have you spotted lately?

Weather: It is 63 degrees at 9:00 this morning. While it is still warm outside, it seems we will have scattered rain throughout the day. Highs near seventy today, with a 50% chance of showers. Lows in the mid-forties with a 30% chance of rain.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count   Spotted at various times & places around Kiawah during the week-end: One great horned owl with an owlet, one belted kingfisher, two anoles, two osprey, several Carolina wrens, four great blue herons, several Carolina chickadees, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

March 26, 2010 Week-end Edition

It is partly cloudy on Kiawah this morning.  We head into our week-end with partly sunny skies and very warm temperatures.  Though there is a slight chance of showers during the week-end, it is quite possible they will pass by Kiawah.  So make your plans now to GET OUTSIDE AND PLAY!

Don't forget! Today is the last day to RSVP for the March 30th presentation by Ann Rivers Siddons.  This is sponsored by KICA and the Sophia Institute.  Please click here for more information

American Alligator Cheryl found this alligator at Oak Point, soaking up the sun.  Guess she has a REALLY good telephoto lens!

March 25, 2010

Kiawah is a bit overcast this morning. The live oaks are still shedding their leaves. It is time to rake them up and whip the yards into shape. The new growth on the oaks - well all the trees! - is beginning to show. The Bartlett Pears have exploded with blossoms, and a few azaleas have already sprouted their lovely flowers. Isn't spring in the Lowcountry a beautiful sight?

Yesterday's fabulous weather had folks young and old playing outside. There were bikers and joggers, beachgoers and strollers...it was terrific to see so many people out enjoying activities.

Weather: It is 53 degrees at 9:05 this morning. Though we have cloudy skies, the possibility of rain does not really arrive until later this evening.  Highs near seventy today. Lows tonight in the upper fifties, with a 20% chance of showers.

It is sunny and cool on Kiawah this morning. Hopefully the slim possibility of rain will not materialize, and we can all go outside & play today!

This is the time of year when our lovely live oaks become the scourge of gardens - and gardeners! March's "lion" winds have scattered the dead leaves everywhere. And except for an hour or two when the yard looks nice, raking does not do much good! The leaves just seem to keep coming down. On the other hand, the Bradford pear trees certainly look beautiful with their white blossoms bursting out all over.

Weather: It is 51 degrees at 9:00 this morning. There is only a slight chance of showers today, a welcome respite from last night's rain. Highs in the low sixties, lows in the low forties.  There is a 20% chance of showers both today and tonight.

Island News: Tom Kulick, Commissioner, St. John's Fire District had this to say Wednesday afternoon at 3:45:  "I left the River Course about ten minutes ago. It is still smoldering and there are still flames coming from hot spots. In the next hour or so the St. John's Fire Department along with the City of North Charleston Fire Department will foam down the building in order to cool the debris down more quickly so that firefighters and investigators can enter safely. The Fire Department will be at the scene the rest of the day and most likely well into the night, so please stay away from the scene and let them do their work. The only good thing that occurred today was there were no injuries of any firefighters or River Course employees. Several firefighters  had minor heat exhaustion and were treated by EMS on site.
