February 26, 2010 Week-end Edition

It is sunny and cool on Kiawah this morning. We still have fairly high winds -  from 15 to 20 miles per hour, with gusts up to 30 mph. So don't get too excited about picking up the yard debris... unless you plan to do it again tomorrow!

Don't Forget: This Saturday is the KPOG Annual Meeting at the Sandcastle.  Please click here for additional details.

Astronomy 101: Sunday night is the Full Snow Moon, so named by the native tribes of the north and east because the heaviest snow usually falls during this month.  Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult.

Ibis at Ibis Pond Apparently Ibis Pond is well-named, as there were several ibis there over this past week-end.  It is a terrific place to spot and photograph birds.

Week-end Weather: Once again it is 36 degrees in the morning.  Though it is chilly this morning, fortunately the week-end looks to be sunny and fairly warm. Highs Friday in the mid-fifties, and lows in the mid-thirties.  Saturday's high should be in the mid-fifties, with lows in the upper thirties. Highs are supposed to be in the upper fifties Sunday, with lows in the mid-thirties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count  One osprey, three great blue herons, several yellow-rumped warblers, four white ibis, a few American robins, a few Carolina chickadees, several tufted titmice, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

February 25, 2010

Kiawah is sunny and quite windy this morning. The winds are gusting from 15 to 25 miles per hour - which explains all of the palm fronds and pine cones scattered everywhere this morning!  It is tough to play tennis or golf against gale force winds, isn't it?

Don't Forget: This Saturday is the KPOG Annual Meeting at the Sandcastle.  Please click here for additional details.

Weather: It is 36 degrees at 8:40 this morning. Yet ANOTHER drop in temperature, this time 10 degrees! Brrrrr....  Highs in the upper forties, and lows near thirty.  YIKES! * Plant watch - cover those delicate plants *

Kiawah is overcast this morning, with fog in the low lying areas.  The beach is even fogged in, which is worth catching if you haven't ever seen it.  Carl Sandburg springs to mind...

FOG
The fog comes
on little cat feet.

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

It is overcast on Kiawah this morning, and the weather service is predicting... SNOW! That is NOT a typographical error! The rain is headed our way, and late this afternoon as the temperatures drop, there is supposed to be a rain/snow mix.  Predictions are for 1 to 3 inches of the white stuff.  Typically, folks are currently freaked out about the prospect, a fact that you can confirm if you go to the grocery store.  Milk, bread, & eggs are in short supply.  Hard to believe, isn't it?

Winter Bird at Feeder Kathy says that this little bird loves grape jelly and suet, but never eats the seeds for some reason.

Week-end Weather: It is 43 degrees at 9:00 Friday morning. There is a winter storm watch from noon Friday until 6:00 a.m. Saturday.  REALLY! It is sunny and quite cool on Kiawah this morning.  No, let's face it, it is downright COLD out there!  Folks in the northern regions would certainly disagree, especially with the snowfall they have received recently.  But by Kiawah standards, baby it's cold outside!

Kiawah is overcast this morning, but no rain has arrived just yet. Perhaps getting any outdoor activities done early is in order, just in case?

Lots of folks were out and about yesterday, enjoying the semi-warm weather. Well, warm for February anyway! It looks like today may be a little wet for that though, as it looks like showers are headed our way.

February 5, 2010 Week-end Edition

Kiawah is overcast again this morning, but no rain just yet. It is quite warm this morning, another weather flip-flop from earlier this week.  What does Mother Nature have in store for us next?

Did you know?  Standing dead trees may appear to be useless eyesores, but they are important components of wildlife habitat. "That ugly snag may provide a secure home for many kinds of animals and a virtual smorgasbord of insect food," said Laurel Barnhill, wildlife biologist with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR). "Downy, hairy, red-bellied, pileated and red-headed woodpeckers all feed heavily on wood-boring larvae of beetles and other insects and invertebrates found in snags." To view or print out a wildlife management guide on snags and downed logs, visit the DNR Web site at or call the Columbia DNR office at (803) 734-3886. Woodpeckers are also the primary excavators of nesting cavities in snags, Barnhill said. These cavities are later used by other species. Bluebirds, wrens, titmice, flycatchers, chickadees, nuthatches, barred owls, screech owls and kestrels all depend on cavities for successful nesting. Mammals such as bats, squirrels, flying squirrels and raccoons also use cavities in snag trees. A single snag tree may contain many cavities useful to several different species, as well as providing a food supply.

Dozens of snowy egrets Jay notes that the Kiawah Critter Count nearly always includes "and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive".  The roost there is home to what seems like hundreds of egrets, as well as a few other water birds.

Week-end Weather: It is 63 degrees at 9:00 Friday morning. Though it looks like rain for Friday, the remainder of the week-end appears to be dry.  Highs Friday in the low sixties, the lows in the low forties.  There is nearly a 100% chance of rain all day & evening.  Highs should be in the low fifties Saturday, with lows in the mid-thirties.  Sunday's high is supposed to be near fifty, the low in the low thirties.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count  Dozens and dozens of American robins, one osprey, three hooded mergansers, several Carolina chickadees, one great blue heron, several yellow-rumped warblers, two male and two female white-tailed deer, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

February 4, 2010

The skies over Kiawah are cloudy this morning, but every once in a while the sun manages to peek through.

Have you been to The Preserve lately?  If not, you should treat yourself to a bike ride or walk there to listen to the birds.  There is a veritable aviary back there! Birds of all sorts are flitting back and forth, singing their little hearts out.

Don't Forget: Come meet the three candidates for the KICA Board, at Meet the Candidates Night at 7:00 p.m. at the Sandcastle.

Weather: It is 41 degrees at 9:00 this morning. Looks like rain might be headed our way this evening. Highs today in the low fifties. Tonight's low should be in the upper forties with a 90% chance of rain.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count  Dozens and dozens of American robins, one osprey, several hooded mergansers, several Carolina chickadees, three great blue herons, several yellow-rumped warblers, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

February 3, 2010

Kiawah is back to sunshine this morning! The sun is in full force today - what does that pesky groundhog in Pennsylvania know about winter anyway? It certainly seems that winter has already left our island, at least for today.

Weather: It is 44 degrees at 9:00 this morning. What a lovely sunny morning we have this morning! Highs near sixty today, lows near forty.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count  Dozens and dozens of American robins, one American alligator, three Carolina chickadees, one great blue heron, several yellow-rumped warblers, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

February 2, 2010

It is overcast and raining on Kiawah this morning. But on this day of all days, that is a GOOD thing. After all, it IS Groundhog Day!

It's Groundhog Day!  Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow up in Pennsylvania, which means six more weeks of winter.  But our prognosticator here on Kiawah, certainly did NOT see its shadow this morning.  Guess this means that Kiawah will only have four more weeks of winter!

Weather: It is 52 degrees at 9:00 this morning. We sure have been having some topsy-turvy weather, haven't we? It is 20 degrees warmer than yesterday morning, but raining like crazy. Highs today near sixty with a 100% chance of rain. Lows tonight near forty with a 20% chance.

Today's Kiawah Critter Count  One yellow-bellied sapsucker, dozens and dozens of American robins, one Carolina chickadee, two great blue herons, two Carolina wrens, several yellow-rumped warblers, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.

February 1, 2010

Kiawah is mostly overcast this morning, but the sun is trying to peek through the clouds.  Welcome to February... and winter!  Soon the groundhog will predict just how long this cold weather business is supposed to last.  Let's hope it is over soon, and that we are back to wonderful warm weather on our island.

Invasion! The annual American robin invasion has officially begun!  If you look outside, no doubt you will see dozens of robins, especially if you have water or berries on your property.  Kiawah is obviously in their migration path, so we are treated to this invasion every year at about this time.

Weather: It is 30 degrees at 9:00 this morning. We begin February with cool temperatures, but at least it isn't raining! Highs in the mid-fifties today. Lows in the mid-forties tonight with a 90% chance of showers.

Week-end Kiawah Critter Count  Spotted at various times & places around Kiawah during the week-end: One yellow-bellied sapsucker, dozens and dozens of American robins, two moorhens, four Carolina chickadees, five great blue herons, seven Carolina wrens, five double-crested cormorants, dozens of yellow-rumped warblers, three male white-tailed deer, and dozens of snowy egrets on Sea Marsh Drive.
