September 30, 2003 It is another cool brisk morning on the island today. Anyone who flung open the windows before going to bed last night awoke to a VERY cold bedroom this morning!
The poem below was written by Billy Collins, U.S. Poet Laureate. Although it is written about a different season, the feel of the poem is very apropos today!
TODAY
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One mama alligator with TWO babies, three snowy egrets, one great white egret, one great blue heron, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 54 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. Once again the temperature is supposed to be in the mid-seventies. September 29, 2003 It is a crisp cool morning on Kiawah this morning. The weather seems like late fall. There is a pretty good breeze, and the sun is a dazzling ball in the sky.
Everyone will certainly enjoy the cooler weather. It looks like this entire week will be in the seventies, quite a change from our normal September weather. Of course it is nearly October already (Where did the time go?), but it is still much cooler than usual.
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One mama alligator with a baby, three alligators, two snowy egrets, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 62 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. Today the temperature should be in the mid-seventies. September 28, 2003 It's another fabulous Sunday on Kiawah - the birds are singing and the sun is shining! Wouldn't it be nice to soak up a little sun today?
The Kiawah Island Bridge Crawl at The Preserve yesterday was big fun. Lots of folks came out, and despite the rain shower that accompanied them for most of the course, had a wonderful time. Susan Lozier and Katie Bell from the Sandcastle did a terrific job organizing this event. And the goodies afterwards were well worth a little stroll in the rain. Thanks you two!
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Four snowy egrets, three alligators, one anole, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 70 degrees at 8:00 a.m. this morning. The temperature is supposed to reach the mid-eighties, with only a 20% chance of rain. September 27, 2003 It is tough to tell whether it will be sunny or cloudy today. Right now it appears that the sun might just get in a few moments of shining this morning before any rain arrives.
Don't forget: It is NOT too late to join your neighbors at the Kiawah Island Bridge Crawl at The Preserve! Join us as we walk, run, or “krawl” over the river and through the woods of The Preserve. Meet at the Cinder Creek boat house at 10:00 a.m.
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One great blue heron, two snowy egrets, one large frog(?), and one cardinal, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 72 degrees at 8:00 a.m. this morning. Once again the temperature should be in the lower eighties, but this time with a 40% chance of rain. September 26, 2003 Looks like this morning's tussle between the sun and clouds has a different victor. The clouds have rolled in and look to be sticking around for a while. The temperature is quite nice however, so no excuses for staying inside all day!
Don't forget: Tomorrow morning is the Kiawah Island Bridge Crawl at The Preserve! Join your neighbors as we walk, run, or “krawl” over the river and through the woods of The Preserve. Meet at the Cinder Creek boat house at 10:00 a.m.
A big THANK YOU to all of our site visitors. We have reached the 18,000 visitor mark! Thanks for visiting the site! This site exists for YOU! If you have ideas, comments, or questions, please contact the webmaster. We like to hear from you.
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two deer, three snowy egrets, one alligator, one broad-headed skink, and three cardinals.
It is 70 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. The temperature should be in the lower eighties today. September 25, 2003 For a while this morning it seemed that the clouds and the sun were tussling over who would rule the day. Luckily for us, the sun won! It is bright and beautiful this morning, with low humidity and a slight breeze.
Last night there was apparently an owl family reunion on Kiawah. Around 9:30 p.m., there were six distinctly different owls hooting back and forth at each other. This lasted for at nearly an hour. There was a great horned owl and a screech owl, and at least one other species whose call I could not identify.
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One ruby-throated hummingbird, two deer, six owls (OK, they were heard, not seen!), and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 66 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. Today's temperature is supposed to reach eighty. Should be a wonderful day! September 24, 2003 The rain has gone, leaving behind cool breezes and temperatures for us this morning. It looks to be a marvelous day today, with plenty of sunshine. How will you celebrate this terrific weather? Tennis? Golf? A long bike ride? Whatever your choice, today is sure to be a good day for it!
It seems that most of our visitors have headed back to their homes - very few folks have been out and about on the island this week. But perhaps a better indicator is the nearly empty parking lot at the Piggly Wiggly!
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Four broad-headed skinks, five deer, one bald eagle, three golden silk spiders, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 64 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. Once again the temperature should be in the mid eighties. September 23, 2003 Nice weather for ducks right now! It is a gray and overcast morning - the first we have had for a couple of weeks. The showers moved in overnight, and they look to stick around for a bit. The rain is supposed to continue off and on all morning.
The butterfly invasion continues! This little one was captured (by the camera) just outside the front gate. The entire bank of flowers was covered in butterflies. The colors were incredible! Between the lovely flowers and the four or five types of butterflies, there was a fluttering rainbow!
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One red-tailed hawk, three deer, one bald eagle, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 73 degrees at 8:45 a.m. this morning. The temperature is supposed to be in the mid eighties one again, with a 30% chance of rain. September 22, 2003 It is pretty nice outside for a Monday... Looks like things are getting back to normal as far as the weather goes. The humidity is back up, and the temperatures have been warmer than during the past week or so. And it is a bit too early to call this Indian Summer. What will you do with this wonderful weather? Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Three broad-headed skinks, one large frog, one bald eagle, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 72 degrees at 8:45 a.m. this morning. Today the temperature should reach the mid eighties again, with a 20% chance of rain. September 21, 2003 It is a fabulous Sunday morning on Kiawah. Lots of folks are out and about taking advantage of it too! There are bicyclists, walkers, and runners galore. Not any swimmers so far though - probably because the water is getting just a bit chilly! Isabel may have had something to do with that...
The fall equinox is today - Mabon for you Pagan folks. That means that today the amount of daylight and darkness are exactly the same. From this point forward, the days get shorter.
Here's hoping your Sunday is a terrific day!
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two bald eagles, dragonflies and butterflies galore, one broad-headed skink doing yoga, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 70 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. Once again the temperature is supposed to be in the mid eighties. September 20, 2003 This morning is another incredible Kiawah day. There is a slight breeze and low humidity. It is a gorgeous morning! It is certainly a "go outside and play" kind of day.
Both of our eagles were hanging out at their nest near the front gate again yesterday. If you have a good telephoto lens, a nicely zoomed in picture would be very welcome! Click here to send it.
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two bald eagles! butterflies galore, one broad-headed skink, one doe with her fawn, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 64 degrees at 8:00 a.m. this morning. The temperature is supposed to be in the mid eighties today. September 19, 2003 It is another delightful September morning. The temperature holds just a hint of coolness, and the breeze feels soft and warm. And it is Friday! To quote a popular beer commercial, "Does it get any better than this?" J

Hurricane Isabel didn't affect much on Kiawah. We had some waves off the coast that were 8 feet high at times, but no rain or terribly high winds.
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two bald eagles, dozens of butterflies, one doe with her fawn, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 67 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. Today should be mostly sunny with temperatures in the upper eighties. September 18, 2003 This morning is cool and breezy, another incredibly wonderful September morning. It is difficult to believe that we have a hurricane nearby!
As of 6:00 a.m. this morning, Hurricane Isabel was located 300 miles east of Charleston. The waves off our coast are still about 7 feet high. We may receive a little rain later today, but it seems that Isabel will make landfall near the Outer Banks later this afternoon.
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two deer, one broad-headed skink, one bald eagle, several pelicans, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 65 degrees at 8:45 a.m. this morning. The temperature should reach the lower eighties again today, with a 20% chance of showers. September 17, 2003 It is a wonderfully cool morning on the island. Open windows may be the order of the day, as the winds associated with Hurricane Isabel reach Kiawah. Luckily for us, they are just cool breezes wafting across our island, not hurricane force winds!
Hurricane Isabel is located about 520 miles southeast of Charleston as of 5:00 a.m. this morning. Coastal swells are roughly 7 feet high. All your prayers and crossed fingers must be working, as Isabel is still forecasted to pass well to the east of us and make landfall near the Outer Banks Thursday. Isabel's closest point to Kiawah will be tomorrow morning as it passes roughly 300 miles to the northeast of us. However, if you haven't already done so, please be sure to make your evacuation plans.
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One red-tailed hawk, four deer, one bald eagle, two green tree frogs, and one mama raccoon with two babies.

September 16, 2003 We have another fabulous September morning this morning - sunshine and low humidity are the order of the day. Today's photo comes from Erwin Moskowitz of Sandwedge Court. Looks like Erwin witnessed a particularly spectacular sunset. Thanks for sharing!

It is 72 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. The temperature should reach the lower eighties today. September 15, 2003 It is a lovely morning this morning - difficult to believe we are so close to a major hurricane! There are already 5 foot swells off the coast, so Isabel is making herself known.
The Weather Channel says that Hurricane Isabel is currently located about 900 miles southeast of Beaufort this morning. It should turn northwest sometime today, so keep those fingers crossed! Right now they forecast that Isabel will pass well to the east of us, and make landfall near the Outer Banks Thursday. Still, better get your hurricane kit ready, just in case!
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One white egret, one doe with her fawn, one bald eagle, one red-tailed hawk, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 70 degrees at 8:45 a.m. this morning. The temperature is supposed to be in the mid-eighties again today, with a 20% chance of thunderstorms. September 14, 2003 Brrrrrrrrrr! This is September? It is a tad nippy on our fair island this morning. Bet lots of us have been sleeping with the windows open this week! Indian summer will no doubt arrive soon, but this weather is a wonderful respite from the heat and humidity.
The Weather Channel says that Hurricane Isabel is still relatively far from land. Obviously all of us will be keeping tabs on her, especially in the next couple of days. The storm's track should be more obvious by Monday or Tuesday. Let's hope we don't have to head for the hills!
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Dozens of snowy egrets, one broad-headed skink, three deer, and one mama raccoon with two babies.

The Weather Channel says that Hurricane Isabel is weakening a bit - good news for us. "She" is still pretty far from land, but worth keeping an eye on. For now we are just enjoying the cooler weather she has brought us. It is supposed to be a bit warmer today, so it should be a terrific day to "get outside and play"!
Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol passed along this update: as of Sept. 7th, 184 nests had hatched (81.8%) and 145 inventoried. The storms seem to have caused little damage. Kiawah's hatching success this year so far is 76.09%, a bit higher than any year in the last ten. YEA! J

Hurricane Isabel is still pretty far off the coast, so not much to worry about on that score.
Recently a new restaurant opened near Kiawah. It is in the building that is part of Chez Fish. Several people have written in to say that they have dined there and the food was good. It seats about 50 people. You can contact them at 768-0753 for information or reservations.

Luckily Hurricane Isabel is still quite far away. But we are enjoying cool temperatures and very low humidity today - better get outside and play! ** BIG NEWS ** They're baaaaaack! Kiawah's most famous residents have returned to our fair island. "Our" bald eagles have returned, and are busily re-furbishing the nest near the front gate. Stay tuned to this site for eagle updates!
Take a look the next time you enter or leave the island - but be careful! It's best to STOP and get out of the car to look. Some folks nearly drove off the road last year! Craning your neck to see the eagles while driving is not the best way to enjoy the sight.
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, dozens of sea gulls, a doe and her fawn, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 71 degrees at 8:45 a.m. this morning. The temperature is supposed to be near eighty today. September 8, 2003 Tropical storm Henri is just off our coast this morning. After continuous rainfall yesterday, we awoke to more of the same this morning. Hurricane Isabel is still quite far away.
This morning offered a rare treat - while on the beach (yes, in the pouring rain!) I was fortunate enough to witness a once-in-a-lifetime event: a loggerhead nest "eruption"! I was walking along checking the turtle nests when I spotted a lone baby turtle making its way to the water. I was thrilled to see it, and walked closer to watch. And that is when I saw the nest hatch - right while I was standing there! I counted 48 baby loggerheads clambering out of their nest. They were scrambling all over the place! One by one they made their way to the sea. What a fabulous reward for getting up early and doing turtle patrol!
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Forty-eight baby loggerheads, dozens of sea gulls, three "dune deer" (deer hanging out on the beach), and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 70 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. The temperature should reach the mid-seventies today, and once a gain we have a 50% chance of rain. September 7, 2003 The Kiawah Island Triathlon is today! Be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to get around, since there will be bicyclists and runners doing their thing around the island. They really appreciate crowd support, so why not stop and cheer them on?
Tropical storm Henri is much closer to us now. Thus far lots of rain has been dumped on Kiawah (thanks a lot Henri!) but not much wind damage - a few limbs here and there, but that's about it. There are still high surf advisory reports of ocean swells near 9 feet this morning. They are supposed to start getting back to normal this evening. Hurricane Fabian is a thing of the past - we escaped that one!
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Six baby loggerheads, several pelicans, one ruby-throated hummingbird, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 68 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. Yes, that is not a mistake! 68 degrees! Windows will be thrown open all over the island today. The temperature is supposed to be in the upper seventies again today, with a 50% chance of rain. September 6, 2003 No sunshine this morning! Kiawah was buffeted by a storm last night, complete with strong winds and a copious amount of rain. It is currently raining like crazy, with no letup in sight.
Hurricane Fabian is well off the coast and to the north of Kiawah now. But the high surf advisory reports ocean swells this morning are 6 to 7 feet. Tropical storm Henri is much closer to the south and has certainly lived up to the predictions of lots of rain. Guess we will all be making like ducks today!
The Kiawah Island Triathlon is tomorrow - so be on the look-out for bicyclists and runners, especially in the morning.
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One ruby-throated hummingbird, one broad-headed skink, several pelicans, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 70 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. The temperature should be in the upper seventies today, and there is an 80% chance of rain. September 5, 2003 The sun is out - at least temporarily. And it is much cooler this morning than it has been. Perhaps this is a good time to get in some outdoor time? If you are a surfer, you have probably already hit the beach!
Hurricane Fabian is still affecting Kiawah. The high surf advisory reports ocean swells this morning are 5 to 6 feet. Tropical storm Henri has now entered the mix, and is supposed to bring buckets of rain.
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One broad-headed skink, two bottlenose dolphins, four deer, three baby loggerhead turtles, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 73 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. The temperature is supposed to be in the mid-eighties again today. Given the two tropical storms floating around, today there is a 60% chance of thunderstorms. September 4, 2003 The sun cannot seem to decide whether to stay in or come out! Hurricane Fabian is affecting Kiawah a bit more now. The weather service has posted a "high surf advisory" for the coast of Charleston and Colleton counties. The ocean swells reported this morning are still 3 to 4 feet.
Turtle News: The Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol passed along this August 31st update: Our final (apparently!) nest total is 225. That is 45 more nests than last year, but 31 less than Kiawah's best nesting year (1999). So far 152 of our nests have hatched (roughly 68%). "Sea turtles dig the dark!", so remember, "Lights out for sea turtles"!
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: The moth (?) shown above (if you know the answer, PLEASE click here!), two deer, and one mama raccoon with two babies. It is 76 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. The high temperature should reach the mid-eighties today. There is a 50% chance of thunderstorms. September 3, 2003 Hurricane Fabian is still affecting South Carolina's coast. Ocean swells are expected to be 5 to 6 feet by tomorrow. The Weather Channel predicts some shallow coastal flooding over the weekend. As usual, we islanders have adopted a "wait and see" attitude. Fabian may not even reach land. Let's hope it stays out to sea, as some forecasters are predicting.
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Five deer, one red-tailed hawk, one broad-headed skink, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 79 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. The temperature is supposed to be in the upper eighties today, and once again we have a 30% chance of thunderstorms. September 2, 2003 Hurricane Fabian is starting to affect South Carolina's coast. The ocean swells are getting larger, and should continue to do so throughout the week. The Weather Channel is encouraging boaters to "use caution in area inlets and around jetties. Swell approaching these areas can lead to dangerous... often breaking waves and have been known to capsize boats."
Probably also due to Fabian's nearness, we are experiencing much cooler temperatures this morning. A little less humidity would be welcome too! Do you think Mother Nature could see fit to help us out there as well? J
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One very busy broad-headed skink (who made at least four trips up and down the oak tree!) one doe and her fawn, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
It is 77 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. The temperature should reach the upper eighties today. We have a 30% chance of thunderstorms. September 1, 2003 *** Happy Labor Day! ***
Here's hoping that you are enjoying your holiday. It looks like it will be another beautiful island day, so be sure to go outside and play!
Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One broad-headed skink, one baby loggerhead turtle, four deer, and one mama raccoon with two babies.
