November 30, 2003 It is another lovely, sunny day on Kiawah this morning. But once again Mother Nature has seen fit to send us very cold temperatures. The photo above was taken by Kiawah's former mayor, Jim Piet. The photo shows Marilyn Blizard installing a set of wires on Jim's crab trap. These special wires easily let the crabs in, but protect the rare diamondback terrapin turtles from entering. The wires are available free of charge at the Night Heron Park Nature Center. Get yours today! If you would like to read more about diamondback terrapins, click here to review the article on the Kiawah Island Natural Habitat Conservancy's web site. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, four double-crested cormorants , six snowy egrets, and one (very cold!) mama raccoon with two babies. It is 41 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. The temperature today should reach the lower sixties. November 29, 2003 It is beautiful and sunny, but it is COLD this morning on Kiawah! Brrrrrr! Even the birds are huddled together to stay warm this morning. It is a good morning to dive back under the covers to stay warm. Isn't there a good book you have been meaning to start reading? This has all been brought about by the gale force winds we experienced starting yesterday afternoon. They continued throughout the night, and brought the very cold temperatures. And right after some of the most glorious November days too! Still, it should be a lovely day today, even if it does require a little layering when dressing to go outside. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, eighteen double-crested cormorants (eleven of them sunning together on the golf course), three snowy egrets, two great blue herons, and one mama raccoon with two babies. It is 37 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. Today's temperature is supposed to be in the upper fifties. There is a freeze warning for tonight - better bring in the plants! November 28, 2003 This is a day that makes you realize what it is that you so love about Kiawah! Could it be residual gratitude or appreciation from Thanksgiving? It could be. But then again, it could be that a gorgeous sunny day at the end of November is simply wonderful! A day where you can wear shorts (!) outside while playing with your family and friends, can just make you glad to be alive. Enjoy your day! 12:00 p.m. Weather Warning: There is a gale warning in effect for the waters of south coastal South Carolina. There is also a small craft advisory in effect for Charleston harbor. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, one baby alligator, one anhinga sunning in a waterside shrub, ten double-crested cormorants, five fish jumping out of Egret Pond, a trio of cormorants taking a swim together, eight snowy egrets, four great blue herons, and one mama raccoon with two babies. It is 66 degrees at 8:45 a.m. this morning. The temperature should reach seventy today. There is a 60% chance of showers beginning late morning. November 27, 2003 *** Happy Thanksgiving! *** Thanksgiving on Kiawah has turned out to be a lovely sunny day. There will be lots of happy pilgrims today, playing outside and working off that huge dinner! A THANKSGIVING POEM 'Twas the night of Thanksgiving, But I just couldn't sleep I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned - The dark meat and white But I fought the temptation With all of my might.
Tossing and turning With anticipation The thought of a snack Became infatuation.
So, I raced to the kitchen, Flung open the door And gazed at the fridge, Full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey And buttered potatoes, Pickles and carrots, Beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling So plump and so round, 'Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the ceiling, Floating into the sky With a mouthful of pudding And a handful of pie.
But, I managed to yell As I soared past the trees.... Happy eating to all - Pass the cranberries, please.
May your stuffing be tasty, May your turkey be plump. May your potatoes 'n gravy Have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious May your pies take the prize, May your Thanksgiving dinner Stay off of your thighs.
May your Thanksgiving be blessed! - author unknown - Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, one male cardinal, one Carolina wren, two snowy egrets, two great blue herons, six double-crested cormorants, and one mama raccoon with two babies. If you have seen a Kiawah critter, please e-mail the webmaster! It is 63 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. Today the temperature is supposed to be in the low seventies. There is a 20% chance of showers this afternoon. November 26, 2003 It is much warmer, beautiful sunny day on Kiawah this morning. Yet another thing to be thankful for. Everyone is probably busy doing the last minute Thanksgiving rituals - shopping, cleaning, cooking, making pies... Don't forget to take some time out for yourself to just enjoy the holiday and your friends and family. If you are traveling for the holiday this week, please be careful out there! Despite our cooler temperatures, Kiawah still has flowers. The photo above was taken by Marilyn Blizard (thanks Marilyn!). The frayed monarch in the picture must have been very appreciative of finding such a wonderful resting place! Many locations on the island are still graced with blossoms - what blooms have you seen recently? Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Sixty-three (!) snowy egrets at Sea Forest Drive, one bald eagle, two deer, five pelicans, two double-crested cormorants, and one mama raccoon with her baby. Still suspiciously absent: our resident wild turkey! Perhaps in hiding until after tomorrow? If you have seen a Kiawah critter, please e-mail the webmaster! It is 52 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. The temperature should reach the mid-sixties. Tonight's low will be a bit warmer, in the mid-fifties. November 25, 2003 Yikes! It is COLD out there this morning ladies and gentlemen! Brrrrrrr! Although it is a beautiful sunny day on Kiawah this morning, it is certainly sweatshirt weather! Luckily, Kiawah abounds with places that are cool weather friendly. The Night Heron Park Nature Center is always a good place to visit, especially when you want to stay inside. For the more adventurous, the bike paths await intrepid (warmly dressed) souls, the Swamp Garden makes for a nice stroll, and of course there is always the beach... For those traveling off-island today, two lanes of the Stono Bridge will now be open! Click the link to the right to read the article. Eagle Update: "Our" eagles at the front gate have laid an egg! Looks like we will once again have the pleasure of watching a baby bald eagle! If you would like to read about "our" eagles, click here to read an article on the KINHC web site. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Four deer, seven pelicans, four double-crested cormorants, and one mama raccoon with two babies. Suspiciously absent: our resident wild turkey! Perhaps in hiding until after Thursday? If you have seen critters, e-mail the webmaster to add yours to this list! It is 44 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. Today the temperature is supposed to be in the low sixties. Tonight's low should be in the mid-forties. Brrrrrrr! November 24, 2003 We have another fabulous day on Kiawah this morning! The sun is shining and there are only a few light clouds in the sky. Perhaps this would be a good day to jump on your bike and go "eagle scouting"? Eagle Update: "Our" eagles at the front gate have laid an egg! Looks like we will once again have the pleasure of watching a baby bald eagle! If you would like to read about "our" eagles, click here to read an article on the KINHC web site. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One large buck, three deer, one great blue heron, twenty-three (!) snowy egrets at Sea Forest Drive, and one mama raccoon with two babies. It is 59 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. The temperature should reach the mid-seventies today, with a 30% chance of rain. November 23, 2003 Sunshine and a light breeze seem to be the order of the day this morning on Kiawah. Birds and squirrels are flying and jumping about, singing or squawking happily. No doubt they are getting ready for Thanksgiving, much like the rest of us! Thanksgiving week is typically a busy one on Kiawah, with lots of property owners here for the holiday. It seems every year there are more and more visitors here as well. Perhaps Kiawah brings out the thankfulness in people? The "Little Pig" will be running out of Thanksgiving staples soon... Need Cool Whip for your pumpkin pie? - better get over there quickly! J The photo above was taken by Marilyn Blizard. The diamondback terrapin is becoming increasingly rare in our Kiawah creeks. Learn more about them by visiting the web site of the Kiawah Island Natural Habitat Conservancy, and reading their feature article, Rare Kiawah Turtle Gets Special Attention. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, four deer, one anole, two great blue herons, three snowy egrets, and one mama raccoon with her baby. It is 59 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. Today the temperature is supposed to be in the low seventies. Temperatures tonight will be in the mid-fifties. November 22, 2003 More frost on the golf courses and palm trees this morning! But Kiawah is once again sunny and beautiful, if a tad chilly. Today looks to be another fabulous day to get outside and play! The photo above was taken by Marilyn Blizard. The diamondback terrapin is becoming increasingly rare in our Kiawah creeks. Learn more about them by visiting the web site of the Kiawah Island Natural Habitat Conservancy, and reading their feature article, Rare Kiawah Turtle Gets Special Attention. The temperature should be in the low seventies today. Tonight will be a bit warmer than last, with temperatures in the fifties. November 21, 2003 It is another terrific morning here on Kiawah! We had frost of the golf courses and palm trees this morning, but it has disappeared under the bright sunshine. This morning was the annual KICA Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast. Roughly 80 volunteers were feted and thanked. Each volunteer was presented with a khaki hat that has the words "KICA Volunteer" emblazoned on the front. If you see someone with one of these hats, thank them! Their hard work and dedication get lots of things done on our island. A $500.00 check was presented to Johns Island Rural Mission in honor of this year's volunteers. If you are interested in serving on a KICA committee, or simply would like to volunteer, please contact Shannon White at the KICA offices. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle swooping over #7 at Turtle Point, two great blue herons, four double-crested cormorants, two deer, and one mama raccoon with two babies. It is 63 degrees at 10:00 a.m. this morning. Today the temperature is supposed to reach the mid-seventies. Tonight temperatures will be in the high forties. November 20, 2003 This morning dawned bright and beautiful again. You just can't keep Kiawah in gray weather for long! Along with our delightful morning we have much cooler temperatures, and tonight will be downright cold! Perhaps we will need an extra blanket or two? Today is the Great American Smoke-out. The idea for it came from Arthur P. Mullaney, a Massachusetts resident who asked people to give up smoking for a day in 1971 and donate the money they would have spent on tobacco to a local high school. In 1976, the California division of the American Cancer Society successfully prompted nearly one million smokers to quit for the day. That California event marked the first Smokeout, and the Society took it nationwide in 1977. Do you know anyone who might *quit* smoking for a day? Click here to review the WebMD web site for some stop smoking tips. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Six double-crested cormorants (three of whom were perched on the "osprey pole" at Osprey Point golf course), one anole, three deer, and one mama raccoon with two babies. It is 55 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. The temperature should be in the upper sixties today. Tonight will be much cooler, with temperatures in the forties. Watch those plants! November 19, 2003 Kiawah awoke to gray skies and loads of wind this morning. In fact, winds blew across the island all night long, so the streets are littered with leaves and branches. There is even a tornado watch in effect until 1:00 p.m. this afternoon. Did you know? November 19, 1863 was the date that Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address? Tonight is the last chance to observe (or try!) the Leonid meteor shower. The meteors are best seen in the early morning hours between 2 and 4:00 a.m. Head to the beach for the darkest and best viewing place. Be sure to face east to look for the constellation Leo, where the meteors originate. If you would like to read more about the meteor shower, click one of the links below. NASA Leonid Meteor Storm 2003 Leonids Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two large bucks, three does, four double-crested cormorants, two raccoons, and one mama raccoon with two babies. It is 75 degrees at 8:45 a.m. this morning. The temperature is supposed to reach the mid-seventies, with a 60% chance of thunderstorms. November 18, 2003 This morning is mostly sunny, and quite warm. There may be more clouds later, as there is a slight chance of rain. But overall it certainly appears that today will be an excellent day to go outside and play! Linda Wilson shares the photo above, taken by her husband John. What a terrific view of The Ocean Course! Thanks ya'll! Yesterday afternoon a large (for Kiawah standards!) traffic jam blocked the Kiawah Island Parkway for nearly an hour. According to Rusty at Town security, a tractor trailer was attempting to pull an extra long trailer from near Cassique. Apparently when the second trailer was attached, the total length was just a bit too much to navigate a turn. When the truck tried to turn onto the parkway, it managed to block both lanes of traffic instead. No injuries or anything, just a good old-fashioned traffic jam. Yet another celestial event is headed towards Kiawah this week. The Leonid meteor shower will be visible tonight and tomorrow night. Naturally the meteors are best viewed in the "early morning hours" (translate that to 2:30 a.m.). Leftover dust and ice from Comet Tempel-Tuttle create the meteors. So grab a lawn chair, face east to look for the constellation Leo, and start watching! If you would like to read more about the meteor shower, click one of the links below. NASA Leonid Meteor Storm 2003 Leonids Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Three pelicans, five double-crested cormorants, one great blue heron, sixteen snowy egrets (at Sea Marsh Drive), and one mama raccoon with her baby. It is 70 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. Today the temperature should be in the mid-seventies, with a 20% chance of rain. November 17, 2003 It is a fine November morning on Kiawah this morning. The sun is shining brightly and the birds are singing. In other words, all is right on Kiawah! There must have been a fish smorgasbord off Kiawah's coast yesterday. There were dolphins galore frolicking off shore. Some were very close - perhaps a dozen yards from the beach - while others were off in the distance. They were gliding through the waves, occasionally seeming to body surf a curl on their way to snatching a tasty morsel. Have you seen any dolphins lately? Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Eleven (twelve?) bottle-nosed dolphins, six pelicans, one great blue heron, three double-crested cormorants, forty-two(!) snowy egrets, one anole, two alligators, and one mama raccoon with her baby. It is 68 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. The temperature is supposed to reach the upper seventies today. November 16, 2003 Kiawah is dressed to the nines for her big World Cup finish this morning! At 63 degrees, it is substantially warmer this morning than it has been since the tournament began. The final day of official match play in the World Cup is today. The photo above was taken by Scott Collins, one of the assistant pros at Turtle Point Golf Course. You can find tournament coverage today on ABC. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One marsh hawk, one great blue heron, six double-crested cormorants, two alligators, and one mama raccoon with her baby. It is 63 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. Today the temperature should be in the low seventies. November 15, 2003 Brrrrr! It is another very cold morning on Kiawah this morning. There should be a slight breeze today as well, making it unseasonably cool today. It is very odd to see massive tour busses rolling by everywhere you look. It seems impossible to traverse the island without seeing a half dozen busses transporting folks back & forth from the tournament. Thus far everything seems to be going smoothly though. Day three of the official match play in the World Cup. The photo above was taken by Scott Collins, one of the assistant pros at Turtle Point Golf Course. Today's tournament coverage is on ABC. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One *big* bobcat at 176 Marsh Island Drive, one marsh hawk, one alligator, four snowy egrets, and one mama raccoon with her baby. It is 45 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. The temperature is supposed to reach the mid-sixties. November 14, 2003 Brrrrr! It is more than slightly chilly outside this morning. It would certainly appear that Kiawah has arrived smack in the middle of fall - despite last week's 80 degree temperatures. Anyone who went to sleep last night with their windows open certainly received a shock this morning! Day two of the official match play in the World Cup. The photo above was taken by Scott Collins, one of the assistant pros at Turtle Point Golf Course. If you would like to see coverage of the tournament, tune in to ESPN at 3:00 p.m. today for three hours of coverage of today's rounds. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One *big* bobcat at 176 Marsh Island Drive, one great blue heron, two alligators, three snowy egrets, one male cardinal, and one mama raccoon with her baby. November 13, 2003 Today is the official start of match play for the World Cup. The photo above was taken by Scott Collins, one of the assistant pros at Turtle Point Golf Course. The weather today will be cloudy and very breezy, prompting the National Weather Service in Charleston to issue a Fire Weather Watch until 6:00 p.m. for Charleston County. Low humidity and gusty northwest winds around 20 mph will result in a high fire danger today. Click here to view an informational hand-out about tournament parking and logistics. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: Two alligators (one named Bubba, according to next-door neighbor Harry Coor of 195 Governor's Drive), five snowy egrets, one anole, about a dozen Portuguese man-o-wars, and one great blue heron. It is 67 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. The temperature should be in the upper sixties today. November 12, 2003 Day two of the World Cup golf tournament... The island is busy this week, with lots of folks here to attend the event. The photo above was taken yesterday afternoon by Scott Collins, one of the assistant pros at Turtle Point Golf Course. The golfers were busily scouting The Ocean Course yesterday, trying their best to determine its secrets. Have you played The Ocean Course? Click here to view an informational hand-out about tournament parking and logistics. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, two alligators, three snowy egrets, two double-crested cormorants, and one mama raccoon with her baby. It is 61 degrees at 8:45 a.m. this morning. Today the temperature is supposed to reach the low eighties. Be on the lookout for near record high temperatures this afternoon! November 11, 2003 *** Happy Veteran's Day! ***
Kiawah is a bit cloudy this morning, and also just a tad warmer than the past few days. Today is the first day for the World Cup golf tournament. All in all, not bad weather for the start of the World Cup! The sun is gleaming brightly, looking like a typical warm sunny day. Until you go outside that is! You might want to have a sweater on if you venture outdoors today. Kiawah is dressing in her finest for the upcoming World Cup Golf Tournament. Yesterday both sides of the Kiawah Island Parkway near the entrance to the island were adorned with flags of every color. There are even signs as you drive up Main Rd./Bohicket Rd./Betsy Kerrison Parkway. The signs direct visitors to the parking and golf courses. It looks like our little island is expecting a large contingent of guests! Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, two bucks munching near Governor's Drive, two snowy egrets, and one mama raccoon with two babies. It is 50 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. It certainly appears that Indian Summer has left Kiawah and returned whence it came! The wind is whipping the tree branches and scattering leaves and Spanish moss everywhere. As you walk down the street or path, you can hear wind chimes ringing noisily, assuming, of course, that you do not have your coat pulled up around your ears! How many of you will spend today curled up with a good book INSIDE? J Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, one great horned owl, two alligators, one great blue heron, two anhingas, and one mama raccoon with two babies. It is 54 degrees at 9:30 a.m. this morning. The temperature should be in the mid-fifties, with a 40% chance of rain. November 8, 2003 Once again we have a gray overcast morning on Kiawah. It is supposed to be mostly cloudy all day, with temperatures hovering in the mid-sixties. Could it be that fall has made its way back to Kiawah? Don't Forget! The lunar eclipse takes place tonight at approximately 8:06 p.m. It lasts only until 8:24, so be sure to get outside on time! If you would like to read more about the eclipse, click one of the links below. Let's hope that the clouds do not obscure our view of what should be a spectacular deep red moon. Today's Kiawah Critter Count: A dozen snowy egrets, one great blue heron, two anoles, one male cardinal, and one mama raccoon with two babies. It is 66 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. For those of you interested in celestial events, there some terrific ones headed our way in the next week or so. First is tomorrow's lunar eclipse. It will be a total eclipse of the moon, and at its zenith, the moon should be a dark, reddish-orange orb hanging above the horizon. If you want to view the eclipse, go outside Saturday evening at 8:00 p.m. It will last only 24 minutes, so don't dally! If you would like to read more about the eclipse, click one of the links below. More and more activity around the Ocean Course this week - the remaining tents are going up, and there is quite the hustle and bustle going on. Do you have plans to attend the World Cup tournament? Bob Struble sends us the photo above of a recent Kiawah sunrise. So here are more of Kiawah's fall colors - this time familiar oranges and reds! Be on the lookout for near record temperatures today, as the temperature creeps upwards past 80 degrees. After a few weeks of "windows open weather" it appears that air conditioners may be turned back on for a couple of days. It seems that Indian Summer has reached Kiawah! What are your plans for today's fabulous weather? Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, three deer, one anole, two anhingas, and one mama raccoon with two babies. It is a bright and wonderful day on Kiawah. Just the sort of day that makes you want to throw off your shoes and wriggle your toes in the sand. Kiawah's beach sand remains pretty warm, although the ocean waters have certainly cooled. Do you think you will make it to the beach today? Did you know? Will Rogers was born on this date in 1879 in Oologah, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). The island is gearing up for the World Cup Golf tournament next week. If you go to the Ocean Course, you can see the tents going up and the course being prepared for the world's best golfers to hit the links. Are you going to the tournament? It is officially the end of hurricane season, but we have had nothing resembling a hurricane for more than a month. Luckily for us, the weather has cooperated and brought us sunshine and moderate temperatures. But then again, perhaps that is why you chose Kiawah in the first place? Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, a snake, one deer, two great blue herons, seven pelicans, and one mama raccoon with her baby. It is 61 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. Today the temperature should reach the upper seventies once again. November 1, 2003 It is the beginning of November, and once again Kiawah has blessed us with a fabulous morning! The sun is shining, a dazzling ball of bright light in a sky of azure blue. The air is crisp and cool, Kiawah's version of fall weather is here! The photo above shows a few of Kiawah's exquisite fall colors. While our little island does not celebrate fall with the orange and browns of the northern climes, it does have a distinct fall palette. The sweet grass and groundsel, goldenrod and marsh grass, all contribute their unique colors to the fall landscape. What colors have you noticed on Kiawah this fall? Today's Kiawah Critter Count: One bald eagle, two great blue herons, five deer, two anhingas, and one mama raccoon with three babies. It is 64 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning. The temperature is supposed to be in the upper seventies again today.
