It is a bit chilly on the island this morning - a mere 43 degrees - but still sunny and beautiful. Critters are settling into their spring homes and habits...a raccoon has taken up residence in a large live oak. A momma raccoon lived there last year, raising two young. Hopefully this is the same friendly raccoon! It was wonderful to watch her teach her babies to climb the tree, observing them as they grew up. What Kiawah critters have you spied lately?
It is 43 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. The high temperature should reach the upper fifties today, warming as we go through the week.
March 30, 2003
The Wearin' O' the Green Bridge Crawl was finally able to be held yesterday. The weather cooperated nicely, although it was a bit warm for most tastes. About 30 people showed up and walk or ran around The Preserve, and a good time was had by all! Click here to see photos!
It is 61 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. The high temperature is supposed to be in the mid sixties today - no, that is NOT a typo! There is a 60% chance of rain, and the temperature is supposed to drop drastically this afternoon. Better get that exercise in early today!
March 29, 2003
This is your last chance to do the Wearin' O' the Green Bridge Crawl! Head on over to Cinder Creek in The Preserve and join your neighbors for a short walk or run this morning. It certainly is a beautiful day to be outside, and you might meet someone new.

Kiawah is putting on its best spring show this morning! The birds are singing happily and brilliant sunshine bathes the landscape. A lone osprey had much to say this morning as some bikers went past its nest. It took flight and went up, up, up into the sky. The sun glistened off its white belly - pure beauty and peace.
It is 64 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. The high temperature should reach the low seventies today, with a 40% chance of thunderstorms.

One of your Kiawah neighbors, Kathy Fisfis, sent this to the KICA E-mail List over the weekend. "My husband and I have enjoyed biking on Kiawah for the past 23 years. In addition to taking in the natural beauty of the Island, it affords us the opportunity to enjoy Mother Nature and all her critters up close and personal. Well, today's bike ride yielded a bit more than we bargained for." Curious? Click the "Hawk Attack!" link at right to read the whole story!

The sun is trying to peep out between the clouds this morning. Every so often the leaves on the trees are illuminated by golden light - and then the sun ducks back behind the clouds.
Yesterday was a wonderful day for anyone on the island! It certainly seemed that everyone who was here was outside in some fashion - on foot, on bicycles, on roller blades...there were even a few intrepid swimmers down by The Beach Club! Did you get outside yesterday?

March 22, 2003
It is another incredible day on Kiawah today! The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the air is soft and salty.
Late yesterday afternoon Norm Shea was a little busy. It seems that one of our larger alligators decided to take a little stroll across Flyway Drive! Guess it heard that the grass IS always greener on the other side, and it was ambling across the street just down from the intersection of Governor's Drive. Norm said it was "about a 12-footer". It certainly didn't look like it was interested in any of the people who came to witness its little hike! If anybody had a camera with them when they saw this, PLEASE send a photo. We would all like to see it!
It is 55 degrees at 7:00 a.m. this morning. It is supposed to be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the upper seventies.
March 21, 2003
The storms this past week have wreaked havoc on the landscape - there are oak leaves everywhere...and branches...and palm fronds...and...you get the idea. The bright side is that perhaps the wind and rain have stripped all the oak leaves off and we can begin to get things in order for spring. And with all this rain, we should have plenty of flowers!
This little community web site has surpassed the 7000 visitors mark in under four months. Thanks to all of you who stop by each day to visit!
It is 66 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. The high temperature is supposed to be in the upper seventies today. We may still receive a bit of rain, but currently the sun is shining...YEA!
March 20, 2003
Eagle Update: "Our" eaglet is getting more and more adventurous. Yesterday afternoon it was spotted on a tree in the marsh just before Mingo Point. It was accompanied by one of its parents though, so perhaps this was an "eagle field trip". The two of them looked to be having a fine time soaring high then plunging low over the marsh grasses.
It is 70 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. The high temperature should reach the mid seventies today. WEATHER WARNING: The Weather Channel states that there is a 100% chance of thunderstorms today (although that is certainly obvious!) with the possibility of large hail and perhaps even a tornado. Be careful out there!

The marsh was draped in a fog blanket this morning - birds flitted in and out of the fog cover, winging effortlessly through the mist. They seemed to be playing in it! Do you think that birds see the fog as we do?
It is 59 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning. The high temperature should be near 70 again today with occasional showers. The Weather Channel says we may get some sunshine peeking through the clouds later today, but the current cloud cover doesn't make that seem very likely!

** Happy St. Patrick's Day! **
This is the time of year when our lovely live oaks become the scourge of gardens - and gardeners! March's "lion" winds have scattered the dead leaves everywhere. And except for an hour or two when the yard looks nice, raking does not do much good! The leaves just seem to keep coming down. On the other hand, the Bradford pear trees certainly look beautiful with their white blossoms bursting out all over.
It is 54 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning. Once again the high temperature will be near 70 today with occasional showers.
March 16, 2003
The Wearin' O' The Green Bridge Crawl was cancelled yesterday due to inclement weather. However, a few stalwart folks still showed up and were determined to persevere despite the less than ideal conditions. Here they are at the Cinder Creek Pavilion.
The Bridge Crawl has been re-scheduled for March 22nd, so now you have ZERO excuses! You have one additional week to locate those tennis shoes and something green to wear. Meet up with your neighbors next Saturday and crawl the bridge! No hangover necessary...

Eagle Update: "Our" eaglet is still practicing with its daily flights. Early yesterday morning, it was swooping over its nest in giant circles. It flew across the parkway and landed in a tree to the left of the real estate office. Wednesday afternoon, an employee at Turtle Point reported a fly-over by the entire eagle family! They dropped low and "buzzed the flight deck" one by one, with the eaglet in the center of the flight pattern. Have you seen any eagle flights?

The live oaks are starting to shed their leaves. Soon it will be time to rake them up and whip the yards into shape. The new growth on the oaks - well all the trees! - is beginning to show. The Bartlett Pears have exploded with blossoms, and soon the azaleas will sprout their lovely flowers. Isn't spring in the Lowcountry a beautiful sight?

March 8, 2003
This morning we are being treated to something we have not seen much of for the past week...SUNSHINE! What a wonderful sight to see the leaves swathed in sunlight again. I don't know about you, but I think that this merits some serious time spent outside today. What will you do to enjoy the sunshine?

March 4, 2003
While driving down the Kiawah Island Parkway last night, a fox darted out from the trees and skirted the edge of the road. It was the first time in quite a while that a fox had been seen (by me at least!). Everyone, PLEASE be careful driving, especially near dawn and dusk. Kiawah's critters will thank you!

Welcome to March! Since the weather is not cooperating just now, why not try a little poetry to lighten things up?
Spring
March wind upon my face,
Nubby lambs, shamrock lace,
Dancing kites soaring high,
Bold sunlight in azure sky -
Ah, yes, now I remember...
Spring awakening the world.
Judith A. Lindberg
It is 50 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. The sky is once again gray and looks threatening. Perhaps that is due to the 90% chance of rain? The high temperature is supposed to reach the upper fifties today.
