It is 39 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning. It is supposed to be mostly cloudy today, with a high temperature in the mid-fifties. Not too bad for the last day of January!
Today is also the last day for entering our contest, so be sure to get those entries in before midnight. The winners will be announced next week, so stay tuned.
January 30, 2003
One of our raccoons stopped by last night to say hello. Apparently she was out enjoying the warmer temperatures. She is a cute little raccoon, with "eyeliner" around her eyes and a tiny black spot on her forehead. Have you ever noticed that each raccoon's face is different?
It is 52 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning - yea! What a nice day for January. The high temperature will reach the mid-sixties today, (six? SIX? Yes, sixties!) so if you missed getting outside yesterday, you have another chance.
January 29, 2003
Yesterday was a big day for the Kiawah Island Natural Habitat Conservancy - a newly protected habitat was dedicated! The property is located at 133 Conifer Lane, just off the bike path on the Kiawah Island Parkway. Be sure to stop by and and check it out!
It is 32 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning - another heat wave? The high temperature should reach the mid-fifties today, so try to get outside and enjoy the nice weather!
January 28, 2003
This egret is surveying the marsh at Cinder Creek near The Preserve. No doubt it is looking for breakfast! Either that or it is just trying to stay warm.
It is a mere 26 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. The high temperature is expected to be in the upper forties today.
Just three more days to enter our contest! Click the link below to enter.
January 27, 2003
It is 34 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning, with the high temperature expected in the mid-forties today. A bit colder than yesterday, but at least it is not 18 degrees again!
The sunrise looked terrific this morning - lots of pinks and purples peeking over the horizon. A little sunshine will go a long way with this cold weather, don't you think?
January 26, 2003
Yesterday must have been a family reunion of sorts for the white egrets here on the island. Early in the morning there were more than 100 of them perched on the trees on one side of the pond just before Sweet Gum Lane. They were huddled closely together (no doubt to keep warm!), each on its own branch. There were another few dozen at the pond near Cassique, perhaps planning the activities for the day?
It is a bit of a gray day here on Kiawah for Super Bowl Sunday, but at least it is warmer! It is 39 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning - almost back to normal for this time of year. The high temperature is supposed to get to the mid-fifties this afternoon. It will be cold again tonight though, with temperatures near freezing.
January 25, 2003
Wow, a heat wave! Today it is 19 degrees at 6:30 a.m. The high temperature should reach the upper forties, and the low temperature tonight is supposed to be in the thirties. Not exactly what we are used to for January, but certainly warmer than yesterday!
An eagle update: Charlotte Hope from the South Carolina Department of Resources said that a recent "fly-over" indicated there are multiple chicks in our eagle nest. Yea!
January 24, 2003
It is so cold that I can hardly type this! It is a frigid 18 degrees at 8:30 this morning, with a wind chill of 7. Yes, those are not typographical errors! We did have snow flurries yesterday for most of the day, but we had no accumulation.
According to the weather channel, this is the coldest it has been in the Charleston area for more than 40 years. The high temperature today will be in the upper thirties, with lows tonight in the high teens again. Did someone move Kiawah Island 200 miles north?
January 23, 2003
It is a chilly 37 degrees at 7:15 this morning. The high temperature is supposed reach the upper thirties.
Although we received no snow showers last night, the weather channel is reporting that "an area of light snow possibly mixed with sleet" is on its way. Not much accumulation is expected, but a "gale warning" is in effect for the coast.
January 22, 2003
Our brief respite is officially over - it is 38 degrees at 8:30. The high temperature is supposed to only get to the low to mid-forties.
Even more amazing is that the forecast for Charleston county is calling for...drum roll please...snow showers late this evening! No accumulation is expected though, so no need to run out to the grocery store.
The fourth annual Toy Soldier Show & Exhibition takes place this Sunday, January 26th, at the East Beach Conference Center. Admission is free, and there will be books, vintage toys, and miniature figures.
January 21, 2003
It is a bit warmer this morning - yea! It is 50 degrees at 7:15, and the high temperature should reach the mid-sixties.
Today's picture was taken on Cougar Island on Kiawah. The photo just does not do it justice though. The colors there now are beautiful, with many varieties of rusts, browns, and greens.
Don't forget to enter our contest! You can enter until January 31st, and then it will be too late.
January 20, 2003
It is 40 degrees at 8:30 this morning. Luckily the sunshine is out in full force, because it is windy and cold!
Thought the picture of the Kiawahians who ran the Laura Griffin 5K road race on Saturday January 18th should be left up for one more day. The folks pictured are: Back row: Robert Millard, Dale Anderson, Mr. Pig Front row: Bill Blizard, Dottie Anderson, and Gregg Bragg.
January 19, 2003
Saturday January 18th was the annual running of the Laura Griffin 5K road race in Charleston. As you can see in the above picture, there was a "Kiawah contingent" representing our island.
Robert Millard (our Seabrook Island representative & Dottie's father) did the course with Dale Anderson.
The three folks in the front row were the big winners: Bill Blizard won second in his age group, as did Dottie Anderson. Gregg Bragg won third in his age group. Everyone ran a great race, so Kiawah was well-represented. Way to go you guys! Congratulations on your awards!
January 18, 2003
It is an unbelievable 25 degrees here this morning at 6:15 a.m. WHAT?!?! And here we all thought that Kiawah Island was in the South! The high temperature should reach the mid-forties by this afternoon, with sunshine helping to warm things up a bit.
Now for a last eagle update before the picture is changed tomorrow morning... for the past week, one or both of the eagles have been spotted perched on the edge of the nest, leaning over into it. Apparently they were feeding their little one each time. Although it will be some time before the eaglet will be ready, we are all certainly anxious to introduce ourselves!
January 17, 2003
Last night the wind was whipping around the island like a banshee. There are leaves and branches scattered across the paths like jacks on a child's playground. No doubt this wind is what brought us these cool temperatures.
It is 43 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning. And the temperature is supposed to get to the mid-forties! Brrrrrrr! A low tonight of near 30 should make everyone start stoking up those fireplaces.
January 16, 2003
It is yet another beautiful sunny day on the island. However, it is a mere 35 degrees at 8:30 a.m. this morning. And although the temperature will reach the low to mid-fifties, winter certainly seems to have arrived. Some places just west of here are predicting sleet and...dare we say it? SNOW!
January 15, 2003
This morning the sky is beautiful - there is a variety of pinks and pale oranges draped across the horizon. Kiawah is fortunate to have some of the most wonderful sunrises and sunsets...have you treated yourself to one lately?
It is 34 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning. Once again the temperature should reach the fifties. Coupled with the breeze, the temperature makes for some chilly outdoor activities!
January 14, 2003
Apparently Kiawah Island is home to more than one set of wild turkeys - another has been spotted on the Turtle Point Golf Course. This fellow (or lady) must live somewhere near the 6th hole, since it has been seen there almost daily for the past few weeks. Hopefully sometime this week it will hang around long enough to be photographed!
It is 30 degrees at 8:15 a.m. this morning. But the temperature is supposed to reach the mid-fifties today. Guess winter has not "settled in" on Kiawah just yet!
January 13, 2003
Not too many people out and about yesterday, but the cold did not bother our Kiawah critters. Several deer were spotted, including a "piebald" deer, who is all white with brown spots. There are at least two of them on the island.
It is a chilly 36 degrees at 7:15 a.m. this morning.
The temperature should reach the upper-forties today. Perhaps winter has finally arrived on Kiawah!
January 12, 2003
This is one of the bald eagles at the nest near the front gate. If you look very closely, you might be able to barely see the second eagle. Its head is just visible at the center of the nest, and is facing forward.
It is a chilly 34 degrees at 9:00 a.m. this morning.
The temperature is supposed to only reach the mid-forties today. Hope you found your sweater!
January 11, 2003
The photographic evidence of Turtle Point Golf Course "going Buckeye" will remain here for one more day. (Which is what happens when the webmaster is a Buckeye too!) We are still celebrating The Ohio State University football team winning the National Championship!
The temperature will be in the low fifties today, dropping to the low thirties tonight - brrrrrrrrr! The cooler temperature tonight will bring us down to the mid-forties for tomorrow. Better dig out those sweaters!
January 10, 2003
No, your eyes do NOT deceive you! Turtle Point Golf Course has "gone Buckeye" in honor of The Ohio State University football team winning the National Championship. A few of the employees at the course are Buckeyes, and the head golf pro agreed to let them celebrate by flying the Ohio State flag. Congratulations!
The temperature should reach the mid-sixties today. The weekend is supposed to be colder though, so get outside and have a good time in the warm weather!
January 9, 2003
Last night the sunset here on the island was phenomenal! The sky was a mixture of fluorescent orange and pink - orange sherbet orange and bubblegum pink - with the edges turning to dark purple and blue.
It is already 50 degrees this morning, with high temperatures expected to reach the low seventies. Enjoy!
January 8, 2003
How is this for exciting news? A naturalist who does occasional "fly-overs" of Kiawah has reported that Kiawah's population has increased by one - an eaglet! Our two bald eagles near the front gate are apparently now proud parents!
Although only in the high thirties early this morning, the temperature should reach the lower sixties by this afternoon. And luckily the sunshine is back in full force - yet another beautiful day on Kiawah.
January 7, 2003
Looks like another gorgeous day on the island. But it is C-O-L-D! It is a chilly 28 degrees at 7:15 this morning - better get out those sweaters and coats. The temperature is supposed to reach the low fifties today, so relief is on the way.
A bobcat stopped by to play a little golf late yesterday evening - well, perhaps it was just passing by Osprey Point Golf Course.
January 6, 2003
It is a brisk morning this morning, but the temperature should reach the upper fifties today. And there is plenty of sunshine in store too! However, tonight will be chilly, with low temperatures in the mid-thirties. Brrrrr!
There are hundreds of birds on the island now - guess they must be stopping by on their way South.
January 5, 2003
Many folks were out and about on the island yesterday, enjoying the sunny weather. There were kites and bocce ball games on the beach, and many bikers on the paths.
The temperature should reach the high fifties today, with plenty of sunshine.
January 4, 2003
It is another "critter day" on Kiawah today. So far this morning, a wild turkey, two deer, a great blue heron, a snowy egret, and a raccoon have been spotted.
It is a bit on the cool side this morning, only 35 degrees at 8:30 a.m. But the temperature is supposed to reach the mid-fifties, so it will be another terrific day for enjoying the outdoors.
January 3, 2003
We have another fabulous day on the island today. The sun is out in full force, and the temperature should reach sixty! Don't you just love South Carolina?
Did you get outside yesterday? It is VERY breezy today, so your bicycle ride or walk might be a bit chilly!
January 2, 2003
This photograph was taken at Cougar Island on Kiawah. The setting sun painted the sky with wonderful hues of orange, yellow, and purple. The view is amazing, with sweeping panoramas of marsh, trees, and the river.
The temperature should reach the mid-sixties today - so we have yet another lovely day to enjoy the outdoors! Perhaps a bicycle ride to find your own personal sunset this evening?
January 1, 2003
Happy New Year! 2003 has dawned with another fabulous day on the island. One of Kiawah's resident bald eagles was perched high atop the pine tree near the front gate, enjoying the wonderful scenery this morning.
The high temperature will be in the low to mid-seventies today, with lots of sunshine.
